  1. Wouldn't a wet grinder like the Tormek with a 25 cm diameter grinding stone give you exactly that concave shape, though?
  2. You should be aware that jigs for the Scheppach wet grinder is often a lot cheaper that Tormek. And they fit. Reason being that Scheppach and Tormek is made by the same company, with Tormek being the pro-brand (expensive).
  3. Mind you... It's not as if my life has been ruined by spark plug problems. In fact, I have never had a problem with a spark plug on a saw. But I guess the coil would go too. Although it is anyone's guess how reliable a high performance laser is when compared to a spark plug that has evolved over more than 100 years. Only time will tell
  4. The Gelert bags are quite good, but they have two problems. Firstly, the straps are underdimensioned (and snap), secondly, the material is quite stiff (especially in cold weather), making it quite difficult to operate the zipper. I have bitten the bullet and purchased a couple of North Face "Base Camp Duffel Bag". They exist in sizes from 25 to 155 litres, and they are really well made. But expensive (although you may get lucky on ebay)
  5. I would second the above, and add that you should keep chip species separate, and sell them "branded". Also, use Google to look up the most suitable wood species for smoking before bagging them. I seem to recall having heard that oak is NOT well suited for smoking. When selling a product at a high price premium above its "inherent" cost, packaging and marketing is key. This is true whether it is fashion/health products or even technology (Apple comes to mind).
  6. OK then, so would you agree that "Half a double fisherman's knot" would be accurate?
  7. Strictly speaking, it's half of a double fisherman's, in other words a single fisherman's, see Fishermans single - Knots Guide | Arbtalk.co.uk
  8. You can create your own QR codes using services like this: http://createqrcode.appspot.com/ or http://www.qrstuff.com/ You can simply add text, or a link to a website (in the form http://your-website.co.uk ). If you want to track the usage, I suggest creating special links for use by QR Codes, by registering on http://bit.ly or http://goo.gl (or similar sites). Then you can collect statistics about how many clicks were made using the link, when they clicked, which device (iPhone etc) etc.
  9. I have given up keeping reusable bottles clean, so I simply clip-in PET bottles, and exchange the bottle weekly (or so). I once had a couple of these... Bottle Ring Holder : SherrillTree Tree Care Equipment ... but now I just tie on a bottle using a bit of throw-line attached to a small crab.
  10. That would be a good estimate, if the wood wqas sold green, but... 1 tonne green wood will become 750 kg dry wood (depending on species and moisture content). 750 kg dry wood will (when split) become 1.5 m³ firewood (smaller pieces => larger volume)
  11. I'd say it's a carrot. Unless, of course, it is Alder
  12. Right! You clearly know your SEO, and provide well-documented advise rather than urban myths. One of the best free documents available on SEO is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Webmaster Tools Help With regards to making the page content more search engine friendly, it is important to know that it makes a difference where on the page the keywords (words that match search terms made by Google'rs) appear. In order of importance (from memory, highest weight first) for weighing keywords (sample keyword "firewood"): In the domain name (no punktuation required). E.g. http://www.bestfirewoodsupplier.co.uk In the page URL (other than the host name). E.g. www.acme.co.uk/firewood-prices In the page Title (what goes into the page/tab at the top of your browser) In the HTML headings (e.g. H1, H2, H3 …). Don't just format the text with a large font, as Google doesn't care about font sizes, use a "Heading" style Also, you should try to anticipate the search term combinations that your potential customers will search for. And use Google Analytics to verify which search terms were used by the people that actually clicked on your link. In my experience, people often add the name of the town/city/county/area as well as the word "cheap", "price" or even "free". You may want to add such words as well to ALL the relevant pages on your website. Google is fairly good at matching variants of words, e.g. "prices", "pricing", "price". Oh. And the last thing: DONT USE FLASH to make your website look "flashy". Google all but ignores the content of flash plugins, and furthermore, it leaves out mobile and tablet users completely.
  13. OK, I stand corrected. If your potential customers are actively requesting (or even asking about) quality management systems, it may have a value. I just haven't ever had any such requests myself. Sorry for the useless advise
  14. My view exactly! Did I not make myself clear? The only way to eliminate any possible business risk is to to avoid doing any business. And that IS indeed a crap mentality. Similarly: The only way to be certain not to make any mistakes, is to never do anything in the first place. But that doesn't get you anywhere either.
  15. You should be aware that ISO 9001 certification says nothing about the quality of your work. It only ensures that you have management processes in place to handle quality related issues, and can document the level of your quality. I am very doubtful that it would be worth your investment (time and money) in the end. Which potential customer would choose you because of an ISO 9001 certification? If you have time (and money) on your hands, I'd rather spend the time improving your website (if you have one) or other marketing related initiatives. That would be more likely to have a positive return on investment.
  16. Yes, frequently a show of faith will pay off, while paranoia is certain to cost you ! Even an ad in a local newspaper with pickup "in person" and cach payment will result in a paranoid feeling that the notes are fake The only way of being 100% certain never to get cheated is never to do any business.
  17. Manual is available at this link: Spons' Mechanics' Own Book: A Manual For Handicraftsmen And Amateurs | by Edward Spon The section in question (7 sections) starting here: Filing And Setting Saws
  18. For calculating area of four sided plots, you can use this calculator: Calculating the area (acreage) of a four-sided lot - Math Central As you don't have any angle or diagonal measurements I suggest you enter 90 degrees as one of the angles, since that would give you a measure close to the maximum possible for the side measurements you provide (i.e. the area will be unlikely to be larger than the calculated result). If you are in doubt of which angle to set at 90 degrees, try each one of them. For triangles, use this calculator: Heron's Calculation of triangle area The results (largest possible area) follow: Area 1: 22.3 m² Area 2: 288.9 m² Area 3: 219.5 m² Total area: 530.6 m²
  19. Just out of interest: How much less was the highest bid from the UK? Are you willing to forego that amount, just because you are afraid of dealing with a foreigner? A UK buyer can be equally deceitful. In any case, if a dispute is raised, the buyer will have to return the goods (your car) to the place where it was accepted by the buyer (or his representative - the shipping company), which happens to be at your doorstep. I don't see that happening. But then again, I am one of those foreigners myself
  20. Which metal detector do you recommend? I have just ordered a Garrett Garrett SuperScanner V Hand-Held Metal Detector | Manufacturer for scanning prior to milling, myself. Oh, and I charge my customers "up to £30" in case I hit foreign objects embedded in the tree. Modern screws made for power-tools are much harder than nails and old screws and are likely to write off a chain, by completely knocking off several cutters
  21. Here is a link to the MS 026 parts list https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14804336/Stihl/Stihl%20026%20Parts%20List.pdf
  22. The problem with beech is that it rots and stains very easily if it is wet for prolonged periods. Så as a kitchen top, it generally gets stained around the sink and faucets quite quickly, regardless of how you treat it. Beech i great for chopping boards, as long as they are allowed to dry out completely after use.
  23. According to "10.3 Carburetor adjustment" in the service manual: Service manual can be downloaded here: http://cornbinder.com/stihl/PDF/ra/ra_e_0002_30.pdf
  24. What's the point? What can you do with the gadget, that you can't do equally well without it?
