  1. To be honest, the described symptoms do NOT sound like the typical symptoms of "white finger" to me Vibration white finger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is more likely a problem with the muscles of the forearm, that pull the tendons of the fingers, caused by prolonged overloading of the muscles resulting in a cramp-like muscle state. If this is indeed the cause, a number of exercises (performed at regular intervals during the work-day) are likely to relieve the symptoms, see Exercises RSI Tendonitis sections: Forearm Flexor Stretch with Pronation Forearm Flexor Stretch with Supination Alternatively, it could be Trigger Finger although the described symptoms don't match too well.

I would be a little concerned about using sawdust from chainsaws for anything related to food for human consumption (chicken, eggs, vegetable gardens etc) unless you use bio-degradable chain oils. Mineral oil may be detrimental to your health. I have no scientific research to back up this concern though, but my view is: better safe than sorry. Carcinogens may be decades to result in cancer.
  3. The experts seem to disagree on the subject (from Wikipedia article)
  4. The operation itself is fairly minor (half hour job). But the recovery time afterwards meant I was unable to do any arb work for a period of 4 weeks, and it was about 3 months until i was fully recovered (climbing etc). Before getting accepted for operation, neurological measurements were made, measuring the difference between nerve response by injecting electrical signals into the nerves of fingers that go through the Carpal Tunnel, comparing it to nerves bypassing the carpal tunnel. Electrical pulse speed and strength is measured, and you get an objective measurement of how much impact the CTS has. I believe that the risk of something going wrong is fairly minor (provided the surgery is performed by hand surgery specialists), and when fully recovered from the treatment, you regain virtually full nerve response, and I recurrence is virtually ruled out (AFAIK). So to conclude: The only thing that should keep you from getting surgery, after being diagnosed with CTS is the lost income during the 4 - 12 week recovery. I was lucky enough to be able to make money doing non-arb related work (software and web development). I believe that all NON-surgical treatments that are offered, provide only temporary relief (at best) from CTS symptoms, but I would be happy to hear about any evidence to the contrary.
  5. I honestly don't think there is any medical evidence that vibration causes CTS, see Carpal tunnel syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I realise that vibration may cause other ailments with similar symptoms, such as "White Fingers" but don't expect to be able to prevent or treat CTS with gloves. A few years back, I had Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery done to my hand, which AFAIK is one of the few scientifically documented treatments with lasting effect.
  6. If you get an iPhone, I'd suggest also purchasing one (or both) of these clinometer apps for measuring height of trees). App Store - seeLevel - visual clinometer How High or Far for iPhone, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation) and iPad Wi-Fi + 4G on the iTunes App Store Both apps use the camera for aiming, making them easier to use than traditional clinometers, and I find them equally accurate. I have been unable to find similar apps for the Android platform, but they may well exist
  7. Switch to Aspen and leave it in the tank (for months - no prob). Saves time and wasted fuel.
  8. Google Places listing is free, see Add a listing for your local business - Places Help
  9. Have a look at Get your free website - Getting British Businesses Online It will provide you with free website address (xxx.co.uk) no annual charges for the first two years. Also, it'll provide you with full analytics tools (Google Analytics) that will allow you to check visitor statistics, geography etc. It is, however a DIY solution. With regards to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), read the free guides available from Google: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Webmaster Tools Help http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf

  11. I don't see any reason why you would want an 18" bar. Go for a 15" bar, which will be much easier (and safer) for your needs.
  12. If you feel up for it, go ahead and read an independent, scientific, peer-reviewed study available online, see http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/36441-how-many-people-use-aspen-3.html#post607340
  13. As you will be an "occasional" user of the saw, I would recommend using ready-mixed Aspen 2T fuel for the saw. It is more expensive, but it has several advantages: You will always have correct fuel/oil ratio (prolongs saw life) The fuel will not go "stale" when left in the saw for months (like ordinary fuel) The solvent content is much lower, which means you'll breathe in less carcinogenic stuff
  14. Or, if you have a smartphone (iPhone), get one of the clinometer apps for that. Way cheaper, and easier to use. App Store - seeLevel - visual clinometer How High or Far for iPhone, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation) and iPad Wi-Fi + 4G on the iTunes App Store
  15. The instructions above does work on (moderate) slopes as well. If you measure the % to the base of the tree, as well as the top of the tree, you should subtract the two, and the result is the tree height in % of your current horisontal distance to the tree. Three examples: 1. Level ground Tree top: 80% Tree base: -7% (downwards) Distance to tree: 20 m (can be measured along the ground) Tree height: 80% - (-7%) = 87% * 20m = 17,4m 2. Slope (up) Tree top: 96% Tree base: 9% (upwards) Distance to tree: 20 m (you need to estimate the horisontal distance to the tree) Tree height: 96% - 9% = 87% * 20m = 17,4m 3. Slope (down) Tree top: 67% Tree base: -20% (downwards) Distance to tree: 20m (you need to estimate the horisontal distance to the tree) Tree height: 67% - (-20%) = 87% * 20m = 17,4m The most accurate reading is obtained when the top reading is about 100%, i.e. the distance to the tree is similar to the tree height. Does that all make sense?

  17. The reason for that may well be that you will never have an allergic reaction the first time your body gets exposed to an allergenic. The immune system needs "priming", after which it may respond with an allergic reaction. (... says my wife, who is a consultant MD).
  18. Combination of not making an undercut, and holding on to the saw made that situation near-fatal. And I don't see the point of grabbing the trunk.
  19. I am located in Denmark. What are you after?
  20. Illegal? Which law would you violate by disconnecting and reconnecting a phone line leading into to a client's property?
  21. If you have an iPhone, I can recommend one of these two clinometer apps, that use the camera for aiming: App Store - seeLevel - visual clinometer How High or Far for iPhone, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G on the iTunes App Store The "seelevel" app is the one that most resembles a traditional clinometer and gives you the most options. But why not just get both? They are both very accurate. I suspect similar apps exist for Android phones.
  22. I wonder how long the batteries last, before they loose their capacity. My experience from laptop PCs and battery-powered drills is, that the battery capacity is halved after 3 years, or so. It makes it a lot more expensive than petrol powered tools in the long run, if you have to write off the battery costs in 4-5 years.
  23. I seem to recall a MythBuster episode where they tried to destroy an engine by pouring various "stuff" in the tank, including sugar. The sugar didn't do any harm, since fuel does not dissolve the sugar (which is why you found the granules). So "sugar in the fuel tank will destroy your engine" is A MYTH! See MythBusters Episode 15: Scuba Diver, Car Capers (2004 episode 15) However, I'd look out for the what happens next, when the sugar didn't do "the job".
