  1. Dealing with the general public is more hassle than its worth full stop.
  2. Had same recently customer wanted some logs . I offered to deliver free of charge 1 cu metre for £80. This was after alot of to and froing too much wood. Of course if he had filled his pick up for £20 it would not have been too much wood. I now dont have people in the yard alot are just casing your joint for an out of hours visit. Why take the risk
  3. Not an expert on merc but check for a glow start on inlet manifold. A fuel pipe going to it with large spade connector. If this has failed you will struggle. Dont use easy start on a good engine ever. It wipes the top edge off the piston ring off instantly thats why engines get addicted cos it nackers them.
  4. My 17 tonne loads of green beech turn into about 30 cu when processed. £650 in to 2400.00 but there is a little bit of work involved:001_tongue:
  5. No matter how cheap you sell your wood people still think you get it free. I pay £40 a tonne so that falls on deaf ears with me. I afraid you have to take the ' do ya want it or not ' attitude.
  6. ms 260 may be better as same weight but more power. Would be useful in future work ms 171 etc not really up to pro work.
  7. Regular sex is good too but with his shopping list I think that might be scarse.
  8. Most other forms of energy are piped or cabled in. If you live in an area where housing and cost of living is high you need to charge more as you cant commute 100 miles with a load of logs. If you deliver to knightsbridge in London it will cost more than a small village in the highlands. I am not going to bust a gut so a millionaire yuppy can have cheap fuel. If you sit down and realisticly cost out wood production into logs it dont look great.
  9. A wood man once told me logs were ' delivering the unprofitable to the ungrateful ' luckily most customers are great to deal with but if I get an unjustified complaint ie 3 of my logs were longer than 6 inch then that comment comes to mind
  10. I used to get every cold the kids had. Now if they start snotting I take a zinc pill and an echanasia ( sorry about the spelling ). I dont like popping pills but I think one a week this time of year is worth doing. Lay off the meat and eat fresh veg, an apple and orange a day. As soon as you drink alcohol it kills any vit c in your system so if you drink in the evening have a healthy meal at lunch time. Wash your hands regular in public places, avoid offices become a hermit. Works for me
  11. just increased my storage by 4x because the shed was empty and i could concrete the floor. Most of my wood went by November. I have alot of beech in billets outside since september but not happy about sending it as its been so wet. Hoping it will be ok for January. I was worried about losing my regular customers but have only heard from about 5% of them so far. All new customers this year.
  12. Charge as much as you can. Its hard graft I felt last year unless you charge £100 a cube you wont make a living at it. If it does not sell out in January it will be even better next year. Like wine improves with age if stored right.
  13. I was told a cubic metre of cord wood should turn in to 1.6 cu metres when processed. From experience over the last four years i would say about right. My beech when seasoned 2cumetres over public weigh bridge 600kg
  14. 2 cu metre £145, may put it up if weather turns cold and the dole spongers run out. What does your bed measure putting a heap on can increase the amount of wood by 15-20%. Looks nice but costs money. I set my bodies just under and heap the load.
  15. I have in the work shop a 3 kva lister flat top year 2001 done about 3000 hrs start on demand with original receipt fo nearly 4k . 1500 rpm alt requires repair or replacement. I bought it in 3 years ago for £550, yours if you want it. Its open frame though so you would need to find a canopy.
  16. For long life and reliability you need to aim for 1500 rpm stuff. Cheaper on fuel too.
  17. My advice would be dont buy anymore of those shown in your pic. very poor quality we have seen so many problems we dont take them in for service anymore. I think you are right about selling when it feels right. We have had 40,000 hrs out of perkins 3152 engines but they are 29 kva so too big for you. I had a 16 kva lister in a silent canopy you could hear a mouse fart next to it. Had 3000 hrs on it last time I see it. If it comes up for sale I will let u know, I have sold it 3 times now last time it went for 2k
  18. The strip at 2400 is a Yanmar idea. I would change oil 50-100 hrs run till 4000 hrs and sell at auction for £550. Buy a new one start again, a new engine is £1200 - £1500. Starter motor on its own is £250 trade. Just my opinion not a recommendation.
  19. If it stays mild and price of oil stays low. I think it could be a bit slow. But hold on tight if it gets cold in jan and feb it will fly out. Most people ran out last winter and their is not much seasoned about. lots of new wood burners installed
  20. Should be £39 + vat delivered. If we pay more we wont make anything. If prices keep rising I will give it a rest for a year or two. I cant charge more for the logs people have little money in their pockets as it is and the price of oil is low. If cord wood keeps rising they will kill the market for themselves.
  21. When you get the unit back I would make sure you stay under 4kw and service it every 50 hrs or once a week if running 8 hrs a day. They only have 1.5 litres of oil in them. Yanmar quote 2400 hrs for a strip and overhaul the most hrs I have seen on one is 4000 . When the warranty is up I would look into getting a spare Alt . I think you bought the best 5.9 kva on te market if you have the p6000s. Good luck with it I will watch with interest.
  22. Had a navara ruined the ride and handling by putting a set of heavy bfg's on. The navarra is a fairly light weight truck and suits the bridgestones it comes with. Check the physical weight of any tyre compared to originals.
  23. out off the vehicles i have owned I like the defender the best. cold, unreliable, cramped, leaky, slow, smelly, noisey but what else is cheap to repair and will go across thick mud loaded.
  24. I dont think nfu are keen on forestry work.
  25. I have been through this my summary was you need some work to keep a van (3.5 tonne ) on the road but you need alot of work to keep a 7.5 tonner going.
