  1. I wont say too much unless you ask me for an opinion. I will say the unit you have imo is the best you can get for £2000 if you spend 6k you may not get much better. I dont work for the manufacturer but have sold this exact unit to many standby customers. The manufacturers seem to be a good out fit you may be better appealing to their better nature. I wont say these units are not up to the job but i dont sell them to prime power users either. a 1500 rpm lister flat top with top quality alternator may be more suitable for you but then you are looking at £6000 +. I am suprised about the amount of problems over a £6 capacitor I feel there may be more to this.
  2. The biggest problem i have at the moment is I can only get an 8 wheeler in the entrance. Which makes it hard for cord wood deliveries. I have concreted an 8 metre pad which makes life much easier for loading with bobcat. What would be ideal is an old grain store with vents in the floor. Your fire wood is also out of sight out of mind of the people looking for scrap metal. Good luck with your search. Try your local pub at about 10.30 people are often in a better mood by then.
  3. This thread has touched a nerve . My father was a war baby and his father was not in his life. Hence no roll model. My father spent most nights in the pub and had very little to do with me and my brothers. I now find I have to make a special effort with my two boys and keep my self in check when critisicing and remember to encourage. i think we have to remember they are children and to a certain extent remain so until in their 20's . Its amazing how many generations it takes to repair itself i feel sorry for future generations with the amount of broken relationships these days.
  4. My needs now would be to process larger timber as cord wood will only get bigger say 15" timber. A powered in feed conveyor a must. Otherwise you pay your money and take your pick. More money better machine normally.
  5. Sold most of my seasoned wood in sept and oct luckily cos its been dead for the last 6 weeks.
  6. Then they would say it was industry and put the rates up. The local press would come round and do a feature as you dont find people making stuff in this country anymore. Best to say who dumped that there look what I have to clear up now.
  7. I have a windsor bar done 500 tonnes not worn yet. If the bar runs dry for a minute every now and again can cause a lot of damage. I Pressure wash and blow dry my oil tank regularly as a drop of water and chip can cause alot of problems even if intermittent.
  8. go for a 260 similar weight to ms181 at least a third more power and better made.
  9. I know that feeling. Tried hoseing down but even that blew the dust about. I think if you can get some moisture into it it will stay down for a few months.
  10. On a 95 it will be an independant which is the one to go for with coil springs. Rated to pull 3.5 tonne trailer and its geared to pull like a train. We had a 93 lwb sounded nice especially on a cold morning. It had to go cos wife complained about hard ride in the back otherwise excellent. Front hubs will probably be automatic. If the four wheel drive fails to work it will probably be some cheap little electric solinoids controlling vacuum. About all i can remember been over tens years since we sold ours. I think you had lucky escape from the freelander that really can be a bag of dung.
  11. This building normally stacked out till January. Empty by first week in November. So with mild weather ( no frost ) I bought 6 cu metres of premix and concreted the base. Its sad but I am looking forward to loading with bobcat rather than hand balling If anyone is thinking of doing this now is a good time as premix prices are falling
  12. Just had same problem with carlton bar. When you move the chain along bar you must be able to see the sharks fin clearing the oil hole. Gone back to windsor bar with no problems. Check oil tank is not full off chips and emulsified oil. I pull my oil supply pipe off before ea session to make sure oil is flowing. Some bars are to deep on the channel especially if the sprocket on a processor is larger than the one on a chainsaw, makes problem worse as it moves chain even further from channel. The chain skips off as its getting very hot and expanding making it tighter will make it come off quicker. Hope some off this makes sense if not let me know and i will try again.
  13. I was on holiday last year and visited a timber works run by a very large estate very proffessional. New Canters lots of equipment kindlet machines and guess what, A WEIGH BRIDGE for the logs going out. Either they are giving away seasoned timber or as u say its wet. They charged £70 a tonne, so going by a cubic metre of my beech at 300kg you would get 3 cu metres if it was dry.
  14. Its not a scam unless you lie about the volume like some others around my area. I occassionally get it pointed out by a potential customer who bought two cubic metre bags for £50 ea which makes my 2cu metre load overpriced by £45. They are not cubic metre bags they are tonne bags when used with aggregate not logs. But if they bought 1 cube for £100 then I am £65 cheaper
  15. Depends on size of body and size of bags ? Some bags 800 x800 x800 = 0.51 cu 900 x900x 900 = 0.73 cu I am avoiding the whole tonne bag thing as customers are getting very wise to the ' its a cubic tonne metre bag darlin ' scam. Shame really cos its a good way to deliver if you have a small hiab.
  16. His kit will probably be worth the same in five years time. Unfortunately my family car will be worth about 20%. Just an idea but I avoid processing onto pallets now. Use concrete and put simple shelter over. That matbro will save your back next year when you shovel them up.
  17. Not much in March, april, may, june, july or august but I did say it was part time:lol:
  18. You will be suprised I do it part time and during December often send out 14cu metres on a Saturday alone:biggrin:
  19. Top up the oil, disconnect the fuel solinoid on the fuel pump and crank it see if you can find the oil leak. Check the oil supply pipe to the turbo, pipes to oil cooler etc.
  20. I got it in my head that you wanted to get going this year cos you bought the van and matbro. I admire your patience. With all those nice new toys I would be itching to get to the battle:biggrin:
  21. Before giving up on your engine check its not something simple. It does sound a bit terminal. If a hose or union fails it will empty the sump inless than a minute. as soon as you see the oil light drop the clutch and coast to the side turning engine off if safe to do so. Often the failure of a 50p component can send an engine to the scrap yard. it could be something like the oil supply to brake pump. Sorry to hear your problem hope its simple.
  22. Sam I would want to see my 22k back in four years. So you need to see 25k a year after all running costs. After four years some of your kit will be worn and need replacing. I would try and find some dry cord wood or buy in logs ready to go. That way you can start building a customer base for next year. Sell bought in kindling and make a profit of five grand towards your 22k investment now. Just my idea no offence intended
  23. A large part of this thread has a feeling of desperation. I would have thought the log business is something you have as an add on to your main business and build up over several years through good reputation. If you want to make it your main busineess you will need a large dry storage area at minimum cost so you can process and season a huge amout of timber through the summer. You are not going to earn a living wage from 300 tonnes of timber in a muddy field starting in september. Not having a go at anyone just my opinion. Start gradually and build steadily. The margins are tight and capital investment is relatively large. At the moment things are quite as the weather is mild but given a few weeks time dry quality firewood will be in high demand. The future looks good for firewood sales as fossil fuels are getting expensive and percieved as damaging to the enviroment. Keep the customers faith and promote the business for the future ( I sound like a far out man enviromentalist and I have had a few drinks so this could look really stupid in the morning ) Stay safe and enjoy what you are doing
  24. What is sloe gin and why do you make it. I think there is some berries in the hedge along the road this time of the year. What do the berries look like and how do you make it. Sorry for so many questions but i come from townie stock.
  25. Getting back to the first post none of us really know what the job was done for. He could have been talking out of his backside. When he gets the wood home he still has to cut it and split it with his diy kit. You have no problem competing with people who dont value their time as there is not alot of them about.
