  1. I had a basic w reg hilux dc on lease hire for 5 months while I had the new navara on order. I actually waited 5 months for the outstanding new navarra to arrive ( little did I know ). The hilux had nearly 200k on the clock and was wrecked but I thought it was great. I now have an s reg with nearly 200k on the clock which is wrecked it starts on the button and does the job and actually has a much better feeling of quality ( the bits left we have not smashed off that is )
  2. This sounds like a better idea even then it needs some decent trees and good access. Maybe you could supply 4 cu metres of logs for his own use. Then he will feel like he is getting something out of it.
  3. I have never covered them before but have pushed the bags under an over hanging hedge. We are running out of hedge now though so may cover some from now on just to see. Someone pointed out when bags are more than 3 deep the ones out of the wind can go mouldy. I used to pile logs up in the field uncovered and the black dirty looking logs burnt the best.
  4. We did a test a few months ago. our trailer holds 3 cu metres so we prepared straight 10" timber to 3ft lenghts. Andy loaded the conveyor and I operated the machine took 30 mins to fill . So in theory with two people you can do the 6cu an hour. We then put 2-3" stuff through after 2.5 hours we had about 2 cu metres. With average timber with me working on my own takes me 1hr 20mins to get 2 cu metres in the trailer allowing for chain sharpening oil refilling and jam ups.
  5. It all depends on your set up and what you have available. I cut beech into billets and it dried really well and could be left out. But I had an upright splitter so had to man handle 1000x600 lumps. Beech starts 100mm and finishes at a point like a wedge. When they were dry the larger bits I put through the processor which then mashed them a bit so lots of trash. If I had a good horizontal splitter and different species I would have another go. What I do now is process into 1.5 metre bags vented then when poly tunnel is empty tip them out for a few weeks. Tunnel has new concrete floor and holds about 100cu metres. With the bobcat I scoop, load and deliver 16 cu metres on a saturday if we are busy.
  6. If you get to the end and still no luck. Hire one of those advertising trailers and list all the faults you have had and the dealers names. Park it out side Nissan Uk. Tv regional centres where the camera points, out side the dealers etc tell the local papers and get them to photograph. I had a new transit for two years it was dreadfull a similar stunt on a Ford corporate day at Thruxton race circuit did the trick.
  7. To answer the original question it depends how much you send out a year. If you get a bit of arb waste in cut it up and send out 50 loads its a hobby. If you buy in 150 tonnes of cord and send 225 loads its a side line. If you buy in 700 tonnes and send 1000 loads its full time, but if you are doing that you will know if it pays.
  8. I think they have all been chipped to a degree. Dragging 160-200 bhp out of a 2.5 litre 4 cyl eng, a cheap alloy rad for good measure there is going to be tears at some time. Normally 3 years 2 months.
  9. When you say small stuff if you mean 8" a processor will really help you. If you mean 2-3" back to the drawing board. Maybe one of those flywheel type machines that seem to half chop and half smash may be better. I would buy a machine that is rated at least 2" bigger than you need because at full capacity they can drop awkward, Jam the splitter, Or produce some bigger logs than you hoped for.
  10. Big can of worms, everyone will have a different take on it. Depends on size and how straight your wood is on which to go for. How much do you want to spend what will you load it with.
  11. If your logs are good you need to try too hard. And you dont need to answer every phone call especially this time of the year. If you have been recommended they will leave a message or call back. Most people understand how small businesses work and dont really want to pay for someone to sit by the phone.
  12. Dave when you run your corporations did you control your staff by trying to identify their faults and then obsessing over them.
  13. I am interested in a U1000 with a 160hp retrofitted. I know the u90 only has a gross train weight of 12,000kg whearas I know U1400 upwards 24,000kg. I want to tow a trailer which will weigh around 14tonne when loaded.
  14. I think the police are more interested in the drivers under 17 years old doing 50k down a 1in6 hill with 20 tonnes of trailer in the pouring rain whilst texting and listening to da ipod.
  15. Dont worry it wont be long before they discover the mobile. Do phone lines go as far as Scotland
  16. No I am sure you build an idea of what people are like and look like on here but when you meet them they are nothing like it.
  17. Thats a bit like me asking you if you have a yellow three wheeled van and a brother called Rodney
  18. I dont know what you are on about cos that programme bored the tits of me ?
  19. I dont know if you can make a full time business depends on your area and how many people are doing it. I have a rule dont buy more cord than you can afford to sit on till next year. Because if the winds come in oct and blow all the trees over you wont be selling it. At £52 a tonne + vat delivered I cant afford to sit on much. The last two winters have been good especially with the popularity of woodburners going in.
  20. You can can fall out of love with a Nissan. I should know but that said it was no where near as bad as the new transit we bought
  21. I looked at a w reg one it had 465,000 miles drove sweet but needed a new drivers seat.
  22. I have been offered an acre of mature wood that needs thinning. My only interest is in the timber for logs. I dont have the experience to fell the trees. The deal would be no cash either way with the land owner. Problem is I dont want to kill someones living but in the forest we pay for timber and in civvy street you charge the customer ?. The trees will not have been planted in nice neat rows there is no tree preservation orders from what i have been told. Anyone fancy pooling resources job is near Andover Hants. I have a good timber trailer with 10 tonne crane which will carry around 10 tonnes. I would be prepared to pay a cutter.
  23. Seriously good engine if looked after. May be worth getting radiator cleaned in case its got the chalk problem we have round here. The cores get restricted and then cook the engine. May be worth a chat to woodleigh power ( Kubota dealer just off M27 ) some times they have some gems they sell cheap .
  24. Yes its called winning you work really hard clicking away with the mouse. You beat all the competition off then you find you have won some 10 year old junk you could have PURCHASED for half the price new with 12 months warranty.
  25. Our trooper is fitted with plastic bumper but does have bullbar will get the welder out. I could do with a safe way of hitching up to a 50mm ball with out leaving the cab. I have a rockinger hitch which is semi auto but would have to change to ring hitch on all my trailers. Sorry for derail must get back on track.
