  1. People need to be trained it is possible to do this without ripping them off. Quality training is more useful from an experienced instructor than certificates and medals. Refresher courses are worthwhile I have never been on a course I did not learn something but at the same time 10 blokes on a 4 hr course £30 ea is enough.
  2. I bought a couple the second just to get a spare stone. Excellent piece of kit and looks like it may even be made in germany by the labels. If you find a fast chain sharpener you can put your chain in the bin cos you will never touch it again with a hand file. They had 20 in stock and by 8.30am they were all gone.
  3. Its what we do best in this country analyse, risk asess, method state, time and motion, Strike, delegate, work avoidance, the only thing we seem short on is getting stuck in. If you play with a calculator long enough you will talk yourself out of anything.
  4. Getting customers is not normally a problem. Keeping enough profit in the log job to buy enough cord a year in advance to supply demand is normally the problem.
  5. Sorry typo should be near £200 for two cubic metres in our tipper:biggrin:
  6. Nothing wrong with driving over 100 mph on tarmac that why race tracks were built. Most race tracks allow people to pay and play on certain days you get the chance to do some serious damage to your engine without concrete walls and street furniture coming through the windscreen.
  7. If it goes a bit pear shaped again I would steer clear of the knitting circle if Janey looks like her avatar I would ask her out. Failing that if toptrotter finished with his new girlfriend sounds ideal ( can buy as many new toys as you like ) or maybe she has a sister
  8. The problem with modern quiet cars with super efficent brakes is u just dont realise you are doing the speed until things go wrong. I have driven 70,000 miles a year for the last 20 years and have unfortunately had to assist on about 7 or 8 major accidents at road side. I still occasionally have night mares I wont go into details just have to say slow down and take car. Driving at break neck speed rarely save more than a few minutes even on an hr drive and puts your fuel consumption up by 30% especially in these modern over gunned diesels.
  9. Add kindling and fire lighters to your stock.
  10. I agree with most of what is said but everyone around you may sell out at £50 a cube by November whereas your selling at over £100 a cube and take till March to sell out whats the problem.
  11. Had a few over the years all in the draw now. Only thing they do is find automatic doors and empty your pockets of cash. The tom tom speed camera thing helps you keep your speed down by telling you the speed limit. Hitting children at speeds above 20 mph is really bad news. so doing 33 in a 30 dont really cut it.
  12. Your figures stack up to mine. I expect to earn £25 an hr supplying logs so 40 hr week 50k a year. With kindling sales and overtime (saturday) should be able to do 50k even with 6 weeks holiday and a bit of sick pay. Good thing about logs is ready market and very little marketing required. Also logs dont tend to go off or get sick.
  13. I have sat down and worked it out as best you can. Buying cordwood at £50 a tonne you need £75 to make 2 cu metres. To take delivery process and deliver takes 3 hrs. On average you will travel 20 miles on ea delivery so thats a gallon at £6. £5 of cherry for the tractor. £1 for bar oil. So far you have £87 And we have not allowed for rent rates electric heating fixed costs on the tipper depreciation on the processor serviceing or labour cost. If you pay someone self employed £10 an hr thats £30. So far £117 so unless you sell for near £200 its not worth doing
  14. If anyone is selling bulk bags of hardwood firewood to the trade could they pm me with prices. We are in Hampshire so I would imagine you would need to be south of the midlands otherwise the transport will kill it.
  15. People selling houses got too greedy and it crashed. The banks got too greedy and it crashed. £140 a cu metre and a mild winter what do you think will happen. I would say £90 - £100 a metre is enough and we live in a wealthy area.
  16. You could hold the bags with forks on bobcat and load with grab any that miss could be scooped back into pile every hour or so.
  17. You are doing the opposite of what we are doing. We are processing into 1.5 cu vented bags when we run out in our concreted poly tunnel will tip bags out and shovel. different method same result hopefully.
  18. I have seen a tool in the past on ebay which use to shovel then hang the bag underneath and it all tips in. The other idea is to use round pipe under your shoot so when the bag is full you put your forks through the handles as you lift the forks pass round the pipe and take the weight of the bag. If you do a search on line you should find tonne bag loaders which should give you some ideas.
  19. No log sales but not suprised not put an ad out for 2 years. Just sell word of mouth in the winter. Sold a lot of kindling to the trade.
  20. We are not far from Winchester and a few months ago we were overun with cookoos. Especially at 4 am
  21. I would take the temp of the oil and talk to Large tree. The Ambiant temp at the moment is 20 deg which does not help and the machine was designed for softwood. I could swap your hard wood for softwood for no charge if it helps The oil will get hot but just depends on how hot.
  22. Yes . No offence I love turners really. When they come in here we have a laugh me trying to shove the stuff up the processor them trying to drag it back with the end chewed off.
  23. If its an arbtalker you will just need to help load. If its from the local wood turners ass osiation he will bring his big F shape spanner and moisture meter and deliberate for 4 hrs before offering to take the lot of your hands for a fiver. You will then be handed a piece of paper with address and exact position where he would like it stacked. And by this time you will agree to anything just to get him out the yard.
  24. Perhaps we could mix in some of them brickette things as well. Has anyone tried mixing Oak slab wood after its been through a woodmizer and outside bits left over.
