  1. I was flooded with work so got a 7.5 tonne daf with Hiab it was about 10 years old. The day we got it the work dreid up, never had another job for it. Cost me £500 every 12 weeks in repairs was a dog. Got rid after 18 months for half the cost we paid for it. As soon as it was gone work flooded in and we have struggled for the last ten years. If I was going to do it again I would spend too much and a bit more on something up together and about 4 years old.
  2. Theres a big gap between throwing things on the floor and polishing it for hours. We hit the happy medium. If our kit was permanently broken we would review, You go with what suits you and what you find works the best.
  3. I service generators and change the oil and antifreeze because the waste is created in the course of my work its my waste and I do not need a wcl. I collect arb arisings which I turn into logs and deliver no waste there. I collect joinery offcuts and turn into kindling with kindlet untreated and non hazardous no wate there. Do I have a wcl yes because you try arguing the toss with one of these pale faced weedy clip board carriers at the side of the road. The first 3 years is £150 then if you renew in time its £100. The extra paper in the back of one of my service agreements seems to impress some customers like a wcl actually means something other than had £100 2 years ago.
  4. Yeah perhaps after 25 years I should buy a new file as well . I do touch up in the field but we have some nasty flints which the birds seem to take pleasure in hiding.
  5. I agree would rather bring 4 blunt chains home with finished job and sharpen in lit heated workshop rather than travel to site twice.
  6. Sounds like bailer twine
  7. I thought I knew somebody who had B16 SAW but they may have B19 will have a look in a few days.
  8. I tend to run hard and sort where required. Although most of my saws have had the covers removed clutch cleaned and bearings greased in the last week. I sometimes think my larger plant is worth more and gets first attention afterall a new saw is £500 a new bobcat or jcb wrong side of 20k
  9. Oak takes along time
  10. Thanks for the help. The problem has been around for years so no great rush. Because we are using the handler more now I thought I would put some time into sorting it out a bit. When it only got used an hr a week we used to just charge the battery back up but now it moves bags about under the processor so alot more stop starting. I would dread to think what the later ones are like with all the electronics this one has been bad enough. I think half the problem is alot of dirt and dust and cables faded and very similar colours. It runs and does what we want so am keen not to make it worst.
  11. Thanks for that. I think the problem is in the dash. I started the truck and after about 5 mins it started charging. I think it used to do this years ago when the old alt was fitted. There is no light on dash when eng stopped but ign turned on. All lamps look good but not one works.
  12. What is the difference between pink and blue are the blue ones more aggressive.
  13. I know where there is a good pile of horse chestnut. Bone dry and feels very light but burns hot and not too fast but if you put too much in a load you get complaints so its not worth cutting. One of the butts is 20ft long and over 3ft wide. Because the customer feels he is paying too much only the very best will do.
  14. I use carlton chain a 20" loop costs me about £3 when its on special. I think the processor chain was 13" about £1.50. I am not bothered if they sharpenen away quickly on the bench grinder. I have kissed gently on some and gone in hard on others and blued the chain. Once the chain has blued it is as hard as nails and you wont touch it with a hand file but for £1.50 who cares I sometimes get days out of one sharpen if the woods clean.
  15. I have about 20 tonnes of lime sat in the yard I cut some up last spring and have burnt it a few weeks ago. At first I thought o, then it fired up and as you say burns like Ash. I have an oven thermometer sat on the stove and it reads the same with ash as it does with lime the only thing that knocks it down is the Oak. The only thing which annoys me is the thick bark which falls off when its dry.
  16. Scats, homebase or cpl pay that for 1.5kg bags.
  17. The wood the net and the electric cost me a pound so I wont be able to compete. But if anyone wants kiln dried virgin softwood in the south we are £1.60 a bag.
  18. Not sure of the rules now but a few years ago you had to put it on retention which will cost £25, then in a year another £25 until you transfer it then it will cost £80 ish.
  19. Its so they can hold the phone and not wear a seat belt you cant be seen form the side. But beware as the front side windows cant be much darker than the windscreen. The police now carry refractometer type thingys and do spot checks.
  20. Thanks Joy anything would be better than I have now.
  21. The small wire going to alt was unplugged but showed battery voltage when ign turned on. I have now got alternator charging but have a feeling when I screw dash down or go over a bump things will take a turn for the worst.
  22. It means I have big nuts private plates are only enjoyed by people young enough to have a sense of fun and a sense of humour. Paid £300 for it been offered £4,000 on a number of occasions but had it many years and just dont need the money right now.
  23. I had one a couple of years ago on a 04 plate ex gas van 30,000 miles like new paid £1700. Bought on Monday Paris Tuesday sold on thursday cos someone offered £3500. While in France it was like a green house with the big windscreen sun always in your eyes and no air con. Went well empty but with some weight struggled. I think the newer cdti had alot more oomph on 05 plate otherwise cracking little van.
  24. Fitted new alt not charging but 12v present going into small wire on alt. Buzzer been going for years while alt stuffed. Tonight give panel a pull about and replugged in connectors on back eventually buzzer goes of and 14v present. If I can get a drawing would feel better about pulling dash about. Its a right mess with added bits for beacons and fans etc. No warning lights at all and head lights work when they feel like. Wants a bit of time and tlc. I would like something abit more tidy but that involves spending 10k plus with more electronics to go wrong
  25. I need to buy a set or at the least get a diagram for wiring under the dashboard.
