  1. Maybe stating the obvious but thought it may help someone. I bought a cheap bench grinder sharpener and for the first 6 chains it was great. Then the cutting performance dropped off. After a few other members mentioned dressing the wheel I had a look and noticed the the grinding wheel wears on one edge. This seems to take too much off the top edge of the cutter. Being impatient and too tight to buy a dressing stone I dug around the workshop until I found an old diamond disk from a grinder ( the type you use to cut paving slabs ) put a pair of gogles on and dressed the ginder in a couple of secs.
  2. Just managed to make enough to keep in front of our regular orders:crazy:If anybody needs a truck load during the cold snap let me know. Warm welcome and free coffee awaits
  3. I am surprised honda have not brought out a 4 stroke petrol chainsaw. I have a 4s strimmer from Honda which produces alot less fumes. Not as powerful as a proper orange strimmer but if it kills me slower I can sacrifice some performance.
  4. If I cross cut alot of dry beech it can clog the nose sprocket. I leave the chain just a little on the slack side this helps the problem. I never grease if you do I think you get a ring of grease that stops the bar oil getting to the bearing. Clean in a solvent bath then lube with bar oil and should be fine
  5. If I was to replace my old 2x I would want something to handle larger timber than 12" . If the manufacturer quotes 12" max that generally means 91/2" or you will be chucking the big bits back in the splitter. I would want another machine with powered in feed conveyor same as the 2x I have now. A swinging out feed conveyor would be good to.
  6. Notice the pattern here you go in too low they say nothing but go in a bit high they are quick to point it out. You cant do favours in business no point being a busy fool.
  7. Could be useful if we can sell this years first. Thats kind of where we get money from. This money then pays for cord next year. Perhaps winter will come next week.
  8. Not sure if I have enough experience to advise. But if it was me I would buy something like a ford 4000 with 4x4 if they do one . I have had a couple of compacts and found them really expensive on parts and a bit light weight. I will buy what I call a big little tractor if that makes sense something 35 hp + with cab not japanese and defo not chinese.
  9. Depends what they are paid as waste. If they get a good price and know customer is good for it why deal with smaller outfits in this economic climate.
  10. I think it feels quiet because firewood is quiet so less toys to show. Recession has possibly slowed work on the arb side. There was a few bullies on here making arrogant posts about 6 months ago but that seems to have gone. If you are posting something tongue in cheek aimed at someone you know well a smiley on the end helps. If you are putting something that may cause offence it probably will.
  11. I would look carefully at buying in the kindling. You will make about 20 bags an hour because the prep will take as long as the kindling and one man operating a machine will make about 40 bags an hour. I saw the posch machine working it looked a disaster if it jams you have to trash loads of wood to get it back to making neat stuff. We use a kindlet best wood is joinery off cuts.
  12. Why do you need star delta. If you dont have enough 3 phase hire a 30 kva diesel generator for the day and connect direct on line to test it. The reason for star delta is to soft start ie genset is too small. Or are u thinking of a transwave rectifier so u can run it from 240v.
  13. Looked a bit big for kindling. What would it do with 14" stuff.
  14. We have probably done ok but it just feels quite after the last few years. We were so busy with making and sending kindling out last summer we did not get the logs processed. Lost opportunity or so I thought things have been quite due mainly to the weather and all the reasons stated by log baron. Not sure what will happen next year but could lead to less competition and cheaper cord prices. 1/3 rd of my turn over goes on cord so if you cant make it pay with free wood its not looking good.
  15. I got one of these jobbies works well. Dont carry it in your pocket or glove box as once it switches on thats it till it eats the expensive 9v battery. Most cheap meters only go to about 45% but over 20% wood is pants for burning. When I first got a moisture meter it was a bit depressing, sorts the men from the boys. Bone dry looking logs 20% on the end cut it in half 35% in the middle.
  16. Occasionally the coast guard sell their old sets. I had a lister 16kva super silent diesel with huge fuel tank under. about 50 hrs from new bought it for £1500 sold it 3 times for £2400.00 not seen it recently but would suit you well. It was 15 years old but mint would cost about £10,000 now new.
  17. Countryman made some good sets. I have had some of these ex army sets with the v twin Vanguard engine rated to 7 kva. They are down rated to provide that output in the worst conditions ie Heat, cold, dust, high altitude. I would have thought you should be able to get 4kva but hard to say without seeing Alternator. Yes I remember Harath they had quite a reputation
  18. I dont tend to sell many small 3000 rpm sets as they are the least quality with the hardest life. Anybody selling these units is up against rubbish from China. I have sold l these sets to standby users and occasional users ie up to 200 hrs a year. Not saying they cant do more its just we make a gross margin of £100 on the sale so cant spend much time on after sales. I would not sell it for burger wagons or people living off grid etc. I remember reading the Yanmar book and its due a full strip and rebuild at about 2000 hrs. If the engines not broke dont fix it. If it was me I would sell it and buy a new one. I would consider spending 4k on a lister 1500 rpm unit. Changing the oil at 50 hrs is an excellent idea as there is only 1.6 litres in there. When I see these small installations I am glad we are into the big stuff. Hope this helps
  19. Yes and the other thing that keeps it high is the power stations have a 50% grant so if we can afford £40 they can go to £80. But in this economy who knows what will happen.
  20. Not here compared with last year its dead. Luckily its only part of our income
  21. I have never used one of those but if its good enough for Rob and people with alaskan mills use it must be good. Milling must be one of the hardest uses of saw chain. At £50 its not a once in a life time investment either.
  22. Unless we get some proper winter they might pay you to take it away:biggrin:
  23. I have an acct with central spares and they are carlton agents. they were doing decent ones for around £100. I bought something from lidls made in germany. The chain guide is a bit flimsey but its great and it sharpens all my chains For £20. I have not felt the need to spend alot of money and I can get the stuff trade. The more adjustable and complicated it is the less likely you are to use it. I tend to only sharpen 325 and the larger 3/8
  24. How many other people had exactly the same thought
  25. Diesel wont come down because the government have such a huge tax interest in it. But heating oil last year was £1 a litre this year it stayed at 59p . Gas is going down. I think if you are buying it in you would like to think it will be £35 at road side if you are selling it your hopeing for £55. I wont need to buy much more for next year and if alot of people are in the same boat demand wont be very strong so guess what might happen
