  1. I am interested to hear how u get on I only need a bigger saw for 4 hrs about once a month. I can get round the problem if it means spending £700 but the convience of having a saw that cost less than £500 would be usefull if its any good.
  2. I would 2nd this
  3. Knock up sump guard type arrangement it wont stop them but they will need to make some noise before they unbolt or pipe cut the cat.
  4. Keep your eyes open for a used cat so you can stick it back on for the ticket.I think They have changed the rules this year if it had one new it needs one now. Unfortunately.
  5. I am only guessing here but it needs to gross under 3500kg and weighs 2500kg empty. 6 blokes weigh 600kg before mc donalds. Most transit dc must have a small pile of scalpings weighing 2000kg on the back. So added up = 5100kg which to an insurance company = risk. After getting checked and weighed in our new vito several years ago we were having a laugh with a vosa man and asked what they were looking for and his reply was. Transit double cab always well overloaded and normally has bad fractures on the chassis just behind the cab, great vehicle but people use them as 7 tonners.
  6. So with plan B in place I just need to decide between a 460 or a 660 or a 576xp or a 7900 makita . I have used a 460 and 660 so just need to try a 576 and a 7900. Thanks for all the advice believe it or not I am actually getting closer to buying a shiney new toy
  7. Hi Adam if you have your 66 available and a spare day we could go for plan B again.
  8. Useful info thanks. I have a 260 for small stuff Ms 390 for 18" stuff. I would like a bigger saw with 25" bar for the2- 3ft stuff, maybe with spare 16" bar am thinking that the vibs should not be too much of a problem as I generally only use a saw a day a week and the big saw would only be used 1/2 a day every few weeks.
  9. A 660 would be useful to me but not as much as a 460. Does the weight of the 660 on an 18" bar not kill your back after a few hours. I have 260 for 13" stuff too big for processor and preping. Ms390 for 18" stuff would like a saw just to cross cut 2-3ft stuff maybe onece a week for half a day.
  10. I need to cross cut butts for firewood I have a fair bit comming in at 2-3ft . I currently use a ms390 . But seems a bit cruel and would be more efficent with slightly bigger saw. I Find a 660 a bit heavy for more than a few hours. I can cut for 6 or so hours with a 390. I am not a big fan of electronics especially if they are know to give bother so that sort of rules out the 441. My favorite saw was a husky about 4 years ago till it blew so would consider another. Advice appreciated from you pro loggers.
  11. Our 300 tdis used to blow the head gasket between pot 3 and 4 on average every 80,000 miles in the end we used to chance the cambelt change until the gasket went and do the lot. I think ours used to go because we used to scrabble up mountains in thick mud then tow 3 tonnes of generator 200 miles home in time for tea and pub.
  12. Everything in aus and nz cost twice as much. Painter decorator gets £50,000 a year but then a loaf of bread is £3. If it was in the uk would be £14,000 thats why we dont have them. Not worth putting them on the boat.
  13. All modern engines have the potential for big problems especially 3 years 1 day. The TD5 is no worse than any other and alot better than most. Small cc engines producing big bhp need more looking after especially on the cooloing side. Alot of problems are caused by people chipping them then towing them to death. Blow a common rail engine to bits and you will look at a 5k bill for a proper rebuild. Rob d is right check its defo the turbo before shelling out. All turbo diesels can run on their own engine oil . Mate who worked with me today had a transit connect 2 years old engine run away by the time he realised and tried to stall it on the clutch it bent the conrod stuffed the dual mass flywheel clutch and input shaft on the gearbox. Never saw the vehicle again.
  14. You always get oil in there just should not have too much. Does vehicle smoke or use oil. I think the engine breather goes in just after air filter so will always be damp in there.
  15. I use a cheap version of wd40 to flush the debris out of the files saves grinding the rubbish over and over again. Other than that not too fussed got a few teeth missing meself
  16. From now till October vented bags left in the sun. Although alot of what I seen locally about 45 minutes
  17. Logs are hard work and a fair investment which you dont see back for at least 9 months. I dont think people who pick up a bit of free timber really affect the bigger picture especially after November. Your quality logs will shine through especially if we have a hard winter next year
  18. I am a generator engineer and I sell logs to top my income to feed the kids and pay the mortgage. I know a 3 generation log man and he repairs generators should I be getting upset
  19. We had a kia pride for 7 years cost nothing to buy and we never serviced it could not get the wheels off rotted on. Great little car then got £2000 for it on the scrappage. I bet those kia tippers are good but your right they could have put better lights on it.
  20. Looking at it simply sam is unlikely to be polluting soil or air. As long as the noise does not annoy anyone the only thing he has done is gone out to work and earn a living. Even in this country I dont think that is a crime yet.
  21. We get turtle wax from maccess about £15 for 25 litres dont buy the really cheap stuff it can etch the windscreen and remove paint especially in sunlight. Dont use too strong and be prepared to get the polish out after because if the paints dead it will go flat especially the red.
  22. I have some gloves with bulldog written on the cuffs hawthorns dont get through. Had them years no idea where they come from but only go as high as wrist.
  23. Reversing a tractor up a domestic property and tipping logs is a bit obvious and is likely to attract the attention of the authorities opening a huge can of worms.
  24. I think alot of people decided to stop burning before christmas to save buying a load. Last year it was bitter and oil was nearly £1 a litre. This year oil stayed at 60p all winter so alot will have decided to ek out the winter on that. Next year could be bumper as alot of people will have given up selling logs.
  25. Yes we did this one two weeks ago. If you do a search you will get all the answers
