  1. I think for some things we need a firing squad rather than a firewood squad.
  2. You could educate the garage by comparing your logs with the kiln dried stuff with a moisture meter. A poytunnel with prevailing wind blowing through will dry logs in a couple of weeks in the summer. But its probably easier to build a kiln that will take a pallet at a time. Makes you wonder just how many of these logs actually make it to the kiln. I think kiln dried is now the name for dry. Who actually polices whether the logs have been kiln dried ?
  3. I seem to remember getting flamed by a member called wired for smoke who had recently joined. Totally uncalled for ignorant rank came back. I think this was your previous screen name ? . You wont remember it because I simply dont reply to people like that. I think you reap what you sow in life and on here.
  4. we have a bit of everything. For towing upto 2000kg you will be fine with the rodeo. If we need to tow 3tonnes or more its an auto landcruiser amazon 4.2 or manual disco td5. I would not be towing more than 2000kg with an auto unless I had at least 165 hp.
  5. You should be able to pick up a cheap unbraked trailer intended for carrying a roller or similar. Once you have the grinder on your truck the c of g will be high and you need to take the ramps to unload other end. Having the buck empty leaves room for other things.
  6. I buy in 200 litre barrels i think the 3 year is £1.20 a litre and 5 year £1.40. My knowledge on oil is less, its brown if the engine lives it was good. I think Timber cutter on here was in the lube business and does not speak highly of some synthetic oils. I got the impression some is poor quality man made stock.
  7. I own a discovery van but when someone says Landrover owner I think of the really fast show years ago. There was two hairy beareded freaks sat in a lr buggy thing at the bottom of a steep slope, next the view was hidden by smoke and lots of noise they were bouncing up and down when smoke cleared they were still at the bottom . I travel across salisbury plain servicing gensets and often find people up to their wing mirrors in mud been there hours. Those little rovers should be easier for me to pull out especially with my road tyres on
  8. Begining of October is a good time to check antifreeze on everything in the yard. We change antifreeze when condition indicates. in the last few years the 5 year stuff is now about the same price as the old bluecol stuff. I dont like changing coolant every 2 years especially in hard water areas as the minerals can build up and clog rads. If you have had an engine freeze and 'got away with it ' keep a close eye as often in a few weeks the head gasket goes or core plug falls out or a manifold somewhere has a crack in it. Dont want to bore the pants off but after 20 years of looking after large gensets have a good knowledge on Antifreeze if anyone needs advice.
  9. Td5 is ok once you learn to drive it with a bit more rev. Its not actually revving high just sounds it compared to the 4cyl 300 tdi
  10. Those forklift tyres look a bit hard for bumpy tracks when the tipper is full of logs. Now Landrover are out of it maybe it will be worth Toyota bringing some commercial Landcruisers in. Not the 4.2 guzzlers I have but some nice 3.0 litre d4d
  11. I have a hunter in the house about 8 years old been very good. Bought a new burner this week called a solution made by arada in Dorset. Amazed how little wood it uses and how much heat comes out. Things have come along way in the last few years.
  12. Because he suggested £35 for the green. If he sends it out next day for £65 thats £30 profit for nothing.
  13. I agree, I tried our local rag a few times small ad cost £45 twice a week not one order that I know of. Local free paper £30 for business card size ad comes out every 3 weeks on average 7 new customers ea time we have a go and its not very often so its not like it builds up either. One ad every now and again and bang new orders.
  14. Been in business 20 years have 3 businesses yp waste of time thomson even worse. We put ours in the bin when it comes, if people cant be found online they have gone bust.
  15. Is he really saveing it till next year or taking advantage of the cold snap. He could be competeing with you on price and you are doing most of the work.
  16. He probably had several boys round and picked there brains on how to do it. I have the image in my head of the opening credits of simpsons when hommer is reaching for the 6 pack on the wires
  17. I think if you carry on down the road as you approach centre parks you will find the longleat forestry place on the right. I had a chat with them and there prices they virtually give the stuff away. They weigh the cars out and it was about £70 a tonne. I went to cp about 7 years ago and the chimneys then could not stand the heat of proper logs thats why its the in house bricks. Watch you dont burn it down.
  18. I would sell as is if you get a mechanic in to strip it and find cracked heads bent valves and holed pistons it will be unsaleable and in bits and you will have his bill in your hand. As it stands its a project for a ebay head. They love something for nothing
  19. I read somewhere if you are ill with a cold or the start of flu you could damage your slein if you are lifting weight. Anyone know anything about this.
  20. You only pay tax if the property has made a profit and you have used your allowances. I think you can allocate alot of things as your pension but then you cant sell and realise the money until you retire. I would rather pay alot of tax on a large profit than avoid tax and see very little back.
  21. I think property has alot further to fall in value as much as a third. I think in a few years there will be some good rental opportunities houses that cost 140k may drop to 80. Give this some thought as its as important to have somewhere to live as it is to pay some suited fat cat manager his commission. It will be more difficult to get a mortgage if your throwing £200 a month into a black hole. The reason pension schemes are so complicated is so they can rob you blind without you realising until its too late. I am the generation that got ripped off with mortgage endowements and now we are working to prop up the banks again.
  22. Wish I had some of your beech cord, mine which was cut may last year approx 8 inch dia is 35% within 6 inches of the end. The other variable which helps is time of year its cut and if its left in shade or open sun. Mine will be processed in a few weeks time I find if you do it now it will go mouldy on the end.
  23. That was sort of last resort plan B. I have a 1.5 hr drive and need to power down the factory before removal so thought I would see if one of the reliable members on here could help. Saves another return trip and looks better to the client if its quick and slick. If it was in Andover I could take our crane trailer but 65 miles with a tractor is a bit far.
  24. 10 tonne hiab 10 tonne payload hyd brakes and air brakes
  25. I would view most pension schemes with suspicion most seem to pay below building society rates at best and your money is locked for 20-30 years. When you retire You need to be either skint and hopefully pick up social benefits if they still exist ( ie get your tax back ) or be very well off. Being slightly better than skint and saving all your life will probably leave you worse off as people are finding now.
