  1. £8 scats stihl list price £10 I think
  2. Scats had them. They seem ok but a bit small in the hand. They use the little button cells.
  3. We have had an old 684 running our processor for about 5 years. They come with a permanent 540 and 1000 pto. No farting about fitting shafts its there ready to go. On 1000 pto ours lasts weeks on a fill of fuel.
  4. Do you season and deliver in the bags. We actually process into bags to season and tip into tunnel. I only do logs a day or so a week but in January I load and deliver 16 cu metres sometimes on Saturday alone. I load 2 cu in about 4 minutes I aim to load deliver and return within the hr so I can grab some lunch.
  5. I dont see the common sence bit. He asked how people load there logs there are hundreds of ways and several different budgets. The obvious way is to pick up and hand ball but you would be an idiot if there was a loader next to you. I have many different methods of storage and several machines which get used depending on ground conditions.
  6. I have diced up about 8 tonnes this afternoon with mine so cant be that bad. I bought mine in as new condition from a husky dealer about 3 years ago for £150. I would think that I would prefer the husky but not for another £500
  7. Yes I dont think anyone will argue with you. Although nice seasoned beech does sit nicely in the middle. Burns easily lasts well and gives off good heat along with ash birch and sycamore. I have alot of bone dry pine and it does burn very quickly like 20 minutes and its gone. Beech 40 mins to an hour, oak 2 hrs +
  8. I saw one at a show its a big machine at reasonable money when new.
  9. I will give these ideas a go could still be damp in the middle will chop and measure tommorrow. If I open the vents on the stove we seem to loose heat up the chimney. If its damp will save for next year. I like your web site rob learnt a couple of things this afternoon.
  10. I have tried this around our area almost had a deal in the summer they were supplying public at £50 inc vat and free delivery so I thought £45 + at 20% would be fair as we were buying 70 metres . But for some reason he said it was money in the bank and wanted £78 a cube. On another occasion we had our tipper loaded and we had to top up at yard with our stock then when tipped found it was full of trash. Since then if we dont have it we cant do it when its gone its gone.
  11. I have never had much luck with oak in our wood burner seems to get half way turn black and sit there in the way. Do others find the same ? I am sure its extremely dry as it was even dead standing. The ash and beech tonight bright and mega hot just diappointed in the oak.
  12. I tried everything give in and concrete pad and bobcat. Have made some bund walls from tin plate and ibc crates filled with logs. I use 1.5 cu vent bags and when the concrete is empty tip bags out start again. Can load 2 cu in 5 mins inc leveling.
  13. People seem to be getting fussier about species ie no pine but dont realise a load of wet oak is a waste of time. Lets face it how much better is a mix of beech and birch than a load of softwood. People want it to light instantly and burn for hours. I tend to send about 20% oak and the rest a mix of beech ash birch and sycamore.
  14. I like the idea in one way. The problem I can see is he gets enough jams with 18in cuts it would be a night mare with 10in. The guard on that bar would not pass HS over here. I bet you eat some sawdust sat in that bob cat all day. would it pick up a 12in 10ft length. Apart from that looks great.
  15. Some people round my way would pay £75 a tonne then cut it up and send it out at £40 a metre
  16. Just a quick post I can get deeper and more boring if required. I would just get a 240/110v as the transformer will be a pita to cart about. Also that tranny is only good for 1.6 kw so if you try to boil a kettle will be in melt down before you get your tea. A eu set with genuine honda engine is a good move. Most kettles now are 3kw so 3.5 kw would be a good move. Generators tend to be 4 wire or 12 wire. John I suspect yours was 12 wire you can get 3 lots of single phase from any 3 ph genset balanced up to the max out put. If you buy a 4 wire set in future it cant be rewired 3 phase. But your 12 wire set could be rewired to get just 1 lot of single ph but will be down rated to 60% output. Thats the simple version
  17. I have had lots of defenders and very suitable for the job. But without much effort they could be so much better. Mine put me in mind of 4x4 Marina from the 70's . I run a 53 plate disco van which has been superb. But I cant imagine changing the hilux tipper for another defender unles we need to carry alot more weight over seriously bad terrain. I run an amazon for family transport and back up in business, I like the range rover but there is no way I could put up with the dire reliability.
  18. Had a look in my hilux the fan did seem quite vicious but cant find any hi lift high rise air filter thingies or any adjustments. The heater is as hot as hell so will leave it alone I think as there is a label on the engine that says if you feel the need to fiddle with things buy a Landrover
  19. I often produce 2 or 3 cu on a saturday from the chain on the processor. we put it in 80 litre dustbins and get it in a large incinerator about 3 metres long asap before it gets any wetter. You need to mix with joinery of cuts other wise it wil just smoke the place out. We used to cut kiln dried skirting boards on the hakki for kindling production but even this you could not give away. I have even let it compost down then hired a 14 yard skip to get rid of it.
  20. its been the same every year manic for one week in september then steady till mid December Then cant cope till end of Feb. Difference this year is its been mild so the steaming transit compost for £60 has lasted a bit longer. Most people think winter is October to Feb but some years its January to April. I think alot of people round my way have panicked and dump there logs out there to get some turn over rather than profit. I am always happy for half my stock to sit there till next year but we have sold out for the last 5 years.
  21. Yeah thats one way of looking at it. But large firms spend so much time producing paper work and rubber stamping everything when it comes to job time there is nothing left in the pot so they get clueless agency staff in. Does a skilled apprentice served employee need to write or read 2 hrs of guff to carry out a job he has done without incident for 20 years.
  22. Best one I had the last page said we had to send them a cheque for £100 to enable them to process our H&S paperwork. Because I am a bit thick I sent the last page with an invoice for £100 we did not get the job. The idea of all this guff is if anything goes wrong on the job your fault or not they will land it all back in your lap because you did not read the small print before you signed your life away.
  23. Some of these courses are really good for school leavers as they start from the bottom and work up. The government should make them free to the under 20's. But when they charge hundreds of pounds they are a revenue collector. Remember when you were at school and teacher gave the geek a gold star and he walked about proud as punch showing his mummy. Well those kids grew up and revel in pointless legislation ie burning licence, waste carriers licence, cscs, operators licence for small trailers etc etc. Its a shame somthing as worthwhile as basic chainsaw use needs to be so expensive. 5 people on a 2 day course at £200 is £1000 2 a week and they could go to the golf course friday.
  24. I decided not to bother this year as price delivered in was £55 a metre + vat. This makes a loose cubic metre of firewood will cost me £35 before I use the red the white the petrol and 35k worth of equipment. Luckily I bought a few loads in just to satisfy the caveman in me and stop the kit rusting up. I have seen 1 cu advertised locally for £48. That would leave me with about a £1 an hour I will let them crack on and see what happens in January before I order cord for next year.
  25. I have never used it but the oregon stuff is ok. Why is there always so much black crud at the bottom of the stihl stuff.
