  1. I had dealings with north gate years ago they were called something else then. Easy people to deal with. I had a 3 year old hilux with 140 k on the clock for £175 a month for 3 months while I waited for my navara to come in. The hilux was brilliant should have stuck with that and cancelled the navarra.
  2. If you find two could you give me the heads up. So far I found old and knackered or newer expensive and full of electronics.

    Battery

A common cause of discharge on a young good condition battery is failed diodes in the alternator. It will discharge slowly overnight. Easy way to check is to use a dc clamp meter. If a vehicle discharges overnight disconnect the plug on the alternator ( all wires and if it is still full voltage in the morning goes some way to confirm it ) If you have a drain on the battery it could be something else where which you can track down by removing fuses until the ampage disappears. Make sure you don't have an acm battery like they use in the later discoveries. I am not sure you can use them unless u have a new style clever alternator. They may be fine in all vehicles but I have a feeling they don't fully charge and go stale quickly.
  4. The hilux makes enough din without screwing another 30 hp out of it. We used to tow 3 and half tonne behind 120 hp discos so you should be ok with a standard hilux even in auto. Caravan manufactures often will not warranty caravans towed by pick ups as the firm suspension has been snapping off the a frames.
  5. The turbo diesel was the same engine as yours but with an extra piston ring. I think the extra heat was destroying the piston and rings. Some engine lasted a bit longer with an after market inter cooler. They never addressed it till they brought out the 200 tdi.
  6. The Vito was three years old 60k on clock delivering merc parts around Southampton. We needed something for a few weeks while Landrover tried to screw our d4 disco back together. the van was mint condition and cheap with warranty but smoked heavily on start up and was gutless . We put the usual 800 kg of tools and oil on and booted it to Glasgow. During the journey there was a strong smell of hot metal on several occasions but no smoke. The dpf now rattles around nicely in the exhaust so I don't think it will block up. Now no smoke on start up and it goes like the clappers
  7. I have an 11 plate merc Vito with dpf it never lets any smoke out. That's the idea of euro 5 . Transits, vivaros and old discos are most often seen with faulty egrs. When vehicles are new these devices reduce the emmissions by a slim margin on day one. But a couple of percent could put the vehicle into a lower tax bracket which could save the purchaser hundreds of pounds. After a year or two these devices have clogged up and the emmissions have risen ten fold but because the emmissions test on mot is so out of date the vehicle passes with plenty of room to spare. I have a 16 year old Amazon last year the emmission pass was 0.3 mine recorded 0.03
  8. Do they last longer if full of stones. Mine pick up hundreds of stones. I find if I am being tailgated on the motorway and I speed up slightly to get out the way of the little cherubs my car releases stones all over the bonnet and windscreen of their Audi.
  9. I had a new d22 and that was definately a cat. Dpf never got going until about 2010 . I only ask as interested to know what difference poking the guts out of dpf on different makes has.
  10. It's worth doing a bit of home work first. The old stuff is fine but some of the newer stuff needs programming otherwise it will log faults. Some engines have a cooler on the egr which helps reduce engine temps so need to be careful especially if you tow. Removing the faulty egr often reduces the pollution keeps the oil and engine and oil cleaner. Power and mpg will be minimal. Results on mot will not be affected. Diesels need to be really filthy to fail the mot.
  11. Cat or dpf ?
  12. My Vito gets 40 k out of a £70 tyre Depends also on the depth of tread to start with. My Amazon 16 in wheels get 50 k plus on bfg at. They start with 14 mm But the disco 4 had 19 in low profile which get hotter and suffer more damage from pot holes and towing. They start with 8 mm of tread and with 250 hp last about 12,ooo miles or 6 months.
  13. My proper drinking days are over. I still like a pint ir two a week but no drinking at home now. Through out my life I have had an alcoholic in my family somewhere. The person with the illness does not realise the damage they are doing. It's an addiction similar to heroin in my opinion.
  14. Looked at the bbc 5 day and it's looking proper cold for next week. Ace will be good to get rid of this rain especially for those flooded out up north can get the heat and dehumidifier a in
  15. It definately feels like winters coming I put my speedboat away got my sledge ready
  16. No problem Jon, it's just a thought I not actually organised it.
  17. I think we still have time for a good six weeks of winter anyone else think the same or will it go through warm and wet.
  18. I had magnetic signs on a four year old white van left them on for a few weeks and the paint went completely Matt underneath. Never managed to polish it out properly. Also any metal filings around will sit on the back and leave rust marks on the paint. I don't take the risk now and just go around naked
  19. When we run the joinery off cuts through the cross cut saw they are fed into those bags by a conveyor. We used to leave them outside but the weather is now so wet it's been getting through the bags. They may only stay in that shed for a week or so but we normally have about 80 of those bags at a time.
  20. I had a load of 95x95 planned timber at least 5.2 metres long so I made this the inside measurement. I like my bays 2.8 wide gives a bit of wiggle room with the pallets. I cut the 5.2 roughly in half to get the depth and height with a bit of adjustment for a 200 mm fall. The half finished frame on the left took two of us 2 hours to make the first one took 6 hrs once you made one they fly up. I am thinking of making 5
  21. The fact the current hilux still holds its own against all the other newly updated models would indicate the new model should be a good leap forward. Just hope they don't skimp on the quality and have too many teething problems. When I bought my navarra the current hilux was a mark 5 look how well made they were and how many still run around with 400 k on the clock.
  22. I bought the first of the d22 navara it lasted about 2 years if I had bought the hilux then I would probably still have it. The Nissan/ Renault stuff may have a bit more bling and cup holders but have a feeling the hilux still has the metal where it's needed.
  23. I have been building some sheds over the break. 16x8 but I am sure u could scale it up. Amazing how fast they go up with some 4x4 timber 6 inch screws from toolstation.
  24. I am thinking with electronic carbs and faulty clutch bearings both have lowered their game considerably and it's time to give the other colours a go.
  25. Hope you don't mind I added a bit There is a section of society who, being incapable of anything else have created a niche which they fill by being self confidant bullies capable of bulls*******g their way through life while contributing nothing of any value, many of them go on to be Politicians , shopping centre security guards, work permit issuers, health and safety trainers, facility managers.
