  1. Hi all, I have an piece of oak, felled today, gun barrell straight, about 330mm top diameter and 3.6m long. How much should I expect to pay someone to cut a couple of 150mm x 125mm beams and a couple of 150mm x 50mm planks from it. I will deliver to site and wait while its done. Roughly how long would it take to do? Your opinions and help would be appreciated. Mike
  2. Blimey:ohmy: Which part of the country are you in?
  3. 180hp will just about turn it over without any wood going through it:biggrin: - minimum 300hp
  4. I'm not trying to sound patronising, but please save your money and don't do it. You will be soooooo short of hydraulic power that on a tractor based unit I honestly don't think it would be man enough to take of the branches hardwoods. I drive a John Deere 1270D and it needs everything its got to cleanly cut off MOST of the braches. Fine on Sycamore, Beech (exrtremely hard on the equipment), Oak too stringy and fibrous can be a real head banger sometimes, Birch not too bad but you need the feed speed to do a really good job. The downside of harvesting hardwood is that you probably lose 10% of the produce to waste cos its too unproductive to mess about with it. The upside is that you can cut up to 150 tonne a day in the right material. What part of the country are you in Cosworth?
  5. What sort of harvester are you using?
  6. I got a automatic saw chain sharpener from MIL, just what I wanted. Ace
  7. Don't know about cost per mile, but hauliers for us won't even put it on and take it back off again for less than £7.50/tonne, that's even if they only move it 2 mile down the road. Further than that and the costs only go one way:001_rolleyes:
  8. Try this guy. he deals with quite a bit of the stuff. Chris Rowlands - 07515 396680 Tell him Mike on the tree harvester at Sandringham gave you his number.
  9. Darren, when you finally get it started each time from cold, leave it running for about one minute and switch it off again. If it then starts without any probs it could be an intermittent bad connection on the glow plugs. Had that problem with my ranger last winter and ford dealer couldn't fix it so took it to local guy and thats what it was. Tightened it up and its been fine ever since. Good luck
  10. These tyres are BRILLIANT. Got some for my ranger and they just dont seem to wear out. Try Weeting tyres at Brandon Suffolk, they got mine at very reasonable price. They may sound a bit more expensive than other tyres but when you get over twice the milage out of them they work out VERY cheap.
  11. Can't believe that anyone has got any seasoned cord Andy. With standing hardwood going for £35/tonne yesterday at the commision sale, seasoned cord must be like gold dust!
  12. Sounds to me like you need to start looking at something like a binderberger processor if you're doing that much!
  13. What a damned kind offer. The man is a fool if he doesn't take you up on the offer. Not many like you around buddy:thumbup1:
  14. I have a 55 plate Ford Ranger double cab and its ok, bit bouncy with nowt in the back but plenty of room in the back seats. It does no more than 27.5mpg or down to 22.5mpg when I am delivering firewood with my 8x5 ifor trailer. Have got bridgestones on the front and all terrains on the back and it seems to go anywhere. I am really pleased with it and yes it is a bit basic compared with L200 and Hilux but it was also a lot cheaper. I would recommend one to anyone.
  15. The readings were actually taken from the middle of a number of lengths which had been sawn in half, they were taken like that because they are looking to sell it for energy and it needs to be dry enough and the potential buyers are now saying that its where it needs to be. Why don't you go and check it yourself. You obviously have a lot of knowledge of the timber and the situation it is in:bootyshake:
  16. If you want some poplar for kindling, there is a couple of hundred tonnes near Kings Lynn which was felled early this year or late last year which needs a good home. All from about 250mm down to 80mm. If you are interested let me know and I will give you the number of the guy you need to speak to. I think he said a couple weeks ago that it was down to about 28%mc. Cant remember whether I cut it into 3m or 4m lenths
  17. Really feeling for you fella. Remember all the fun and laughter you've had over the years. There isn't a perfect way to cope with it but with some real good friends and family members to support you, you will get through. My wife and I have both lost our fathers in the same way and it was hard, but with good memories you will be ok. Be strong
  18. In about 3 weeks I will be felling some alder for firewood. There is more than I need so would anyone be interested in a lorry load. It will be about 8 miles north of Thetford Norfolk about 2miles off the A11. Access for 8 wheeler or artic with a crane as there will be nothing to load it with. I can arrange delivery if anyone wants it. It will be cut into 2.3 metre(ish) lengths.
