  1. Hi, I am not a qualified tree surgeon or anything like that, but we regularly do some felling work on a 400 acre poplar plantation and they insist that the trees always have plenty of air space around them. As soon as they start to touch, we take every other tree out. Don't know if this helps:confused1:
  2. Heres my log deck, basic and nothing like as smart as Mikes hydraulic version but it works and theres nothing to go wrong with it http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=78961&stc=1&d=1320001353 http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=78962&stc=1&d=1320001353 http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=78963&stc=1&d=1320001353
  3. No its not hydraulic. I made it so that it slopes down towards the infeed conveyor of the processor, but not too steep, and one of the top runners (that the wood sits on) comes up to the infeed conveyor about half way along it, and the other runner is longer so that the timber lengths are able to roll directly onto the conveyor. I load it with a tractor/fore end loader with pallet tines and away you go. Saved me a fortune and also alot of backache. And as has been pointed out, there is a photo of it on my avatar. If anyone wants some more pictures of it, pm me your email and I will take some and send them to you.
  4. Ben Burgess John deere dealers advertise log processors for hire but not sure what type
  5. I have a Hakki Pilke 1x37 and made my own log deck. The steel (50mm box ) cost me about £50 and I can get about 2.5 m3 on it. Don't see the point in forking out thousands for one when mine does the job perfectly. It took about half a day to make it. Will have a look to see if I have any pics.
  6. i met a guy in cornwall who's family grow pretty much just eucalyptus and sell large amounts. not sure what species it was - you'll have to research. Try John Purse at Prima bio (In Kent i think). He's been very helpful with us for Eucs and we are planting a trial block soon.
  7. dont do it dont do it dont do it dont do it
  8. Only a bit less, about 100
  9. Griffiths pallet services (I think near Cardiff) used to have a huge tracked beast with a chipper drum but not sure if they still have it. He bought especially for that kind of work.
  10. Why dont you contact suffolk woodchips at Brandon (Mike Edwards). He has fastracs with hooklift bins to cart his woodchip and would probably charge for the bin but take the chip for free. (well its worth a try anyway) 01842 813555
  11. I dont agree (but thats my personal opinion). The larger the pieces, the less you need to fill the space. Try taking out all your bits of firewood from your trailer and putting them through a chipper, I guarantee that 2m3 of firewood will not be 2m3 of woodchip.
  12. Hi I am getting more and more orders for logs no longer than 7". I usually cut them to 10" as a standard length, but now charge 10% extra to cut them shorter. Am I being unreasonable or do any of you guys do the same, its all extra cuts and it takes longer to cut a trailer load. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
  13. I should say we both know where they came from. Well done you
  14. :angryfire:Stolen from back of my Ford Ranger yesterday daytime - Clarke HD 12 drawer tool chest with slide out drawers. A quick calculation on a bit of paper and I estimate I have lost over £2000 of equipment, accumulated over the last 28 years since leaving school. Spanners, screwdrivers, hex keys (+ impact socket set), sockets, etc, etc, etc. My truck was parked away from the road between Fakenham and Swaffham and they have forced the locks on the rear glass panel and taken the chest. NFU and police have been excellent, Nfu cheque will arrive as soon as I get some replacement costs sorted out. please pm me if you hear anything
  15. Try Trevor Neve at Even Forestry 07771 736213
  16. Thanks for that SMG, I understand thats its not too good for anything other than firewood, and thats why it was offered as firewood, but was just very surprised to have no interest in it. Other opinions would still be appreciated. Mike
  17. Try Shropshire pallet, they would probably take it if its over 12" diameter
  18. I put a thread on here a couple of weeks ago offering some red oak for firewood from someone selling down in Hertfordshire, but have not had a single response to the thread. Whats wrong with red oak as firewood, I had a small amount (about half a ton) mixed in with my firewood last year and found it burnt really well, is anyone able to tell me what the problem is with red oak as firewood?:confused1:
  19. Many heads mentioned in previous threads will fit on an 8tonne machine but the problem will be with power and oil flow. The 14tonne machines that Wilsons use for the harvadig are ok but you wouldn't want any less power than they have. Personally, I feel you would be wasting alot of money if you went for that kind of set up.
  20. Would anyone be interested in red oak for firewood in the Hertfordshire area. A proportion of it would be quite large making it more difficult for processing, but there could be quite a decent amount and a supply for a year or two.
  21. Thats a really kind offer. Thankyou. I have been given the number of a local mill who may be able to do it, but if I have no luck I will give you a call. When would you be looking to have your training day?
  22. Whereabouts in Norfolk are you? I am at Thetford. i dont know of anyone with a mobile mill locally though.
