  3. Hi there and welcome when you have done your first assesments life will become much better As it will be eaiser to get paid work . Before I did my assesments I did go out and use my saw as my assesments were not stright after my courses . I went and did loads of pratice cutting up any wood I could I find into fire wood doing this really helped me when it came to my assesments . For the felling I was lucky I did find a site that needed some small trees felling So I was able to do a bit before . All the best And good luck littletree
  4. Hi there and welcome you have come to the right place everyone will look after you and give you all the help you need . You will also find plenty of employment oppunities on here to get you going . Doind the years course is great and will give you a really good start If you can get your cs30 / 31 as soon as you can this will help you gain paid work as a groundy giving you experence on the tools using chippers chainsaws and learning the basics it's the best way to get your foot in the door work hard and you will do really well . For me going into arb has been the best choice I have ever made and has compleatly chaned my life For the better .I have never looked back .Every day I do a job I love it's not like work it's play time everyday so it never feels like I am actually at work . Today's job was taking down a line of 8 conifers, the sun has been out all day the customer gave me lunch then tea And cakes . I am back there agan tom to take down a larger conifer looking forward to it allready Good luck and all the best littletree
  5. Hi there for me I had had this problem with so called waterproof jackets for ages in the end I have found a soultion that works a treat keeps me dry all day it's the army gortex jacket and trousers and not expensive in comparison to all the other jackets I payed 40 quid for a top and bottom . Not as light as I would like but it works a treat . Now I also had this problem with getting soaked when you have to where full hi viz clothing on some jobs . again none of the hi viz stuff keeps the water out for more then a few mins so I went for vikins they are a thick rubber but they really work but you can only where them for a short time as they are hot . I got the bib and brace style trouser and a pull on top they come in bright orange but I did have to cut up some old hi viz t shirts to get the reflective tape off to glue onto the Vikings to make them up to rail speck so then I was aloud to where them . It worked well and I no longer get soaked in hi vis . All the best littletree in rainy mid Wales
  6. Hi there if you are allways working for the same company / person then you need to be employed paye by them . I belive they are braking the law if you don't employee you and put you on the books They need to be paying your nat and tax for you . . Self employed status is for people that run there own providing all there own tools and Or working for many different people/ companys with you pricing your own work deciding what you will charge I cannot give you info on holiday pay etc but a visit to your local CAB office should give you all the help you need. All the best littletree .
  7. It was a cracking show really fun to be there with you all . Weather was just wicked everything you could want. Cracking climbs had by everyone. looking forward to seeing you all again at royal welsh lv littletree:thumbup:

  9. Hi there give midland forestry Bristol a ring they allways take on extra tempory climbers between oct to April each year on a short term contract . They do all the council work for Bristol it may be a bit early for them now but worth a call just to see but if you ring nearer the time y will be in with a good chance All the best littletree
  10. Hi there I don't take deposits for jobs but if the job is large and spans several visits I usually do it on a day rate for them and I get them to pay me at the end of each visit or if it's several days together then it's payment at the end of each week . I find this works well for them and me . Up to now I have never had a problem with payment allways had it on the day . When I go and look at the job one of my conditions is that when I come to dothe work the customer has to be home and be at the house when I carry out the work . This way they can have an input and regulary view the progress of the job ask questions and I can make sure they are happy as the job progresses plus they are then there at the end of the day to pay up . So far for me this tact has worked very well . All the best littletree
  11. Hi there getting those 2 tickets will help y in a big way at getting your foot in the door with a company as most like you to have those tickets to sta with As it's showes a basic level of competance . Best way in is to get the yellow pages and ring every company in the book that you would be prepaired to travle too, to see if they have any work . Long cvs don't help so much , companys will get y to do what's known as a trile day or 2 . This is the best cv and if they like you then more work will come your way from them. Allways be honest with them about what experance y have, no more no less , what you tell them is what they will expect from you when you start work . Most companys it will be on an as and when basis to start with , you may need to do this for several companys but you will get more work if they like your work and what you can do . If you own your own saw then use it at every possible oppotunity as like driving a car it takes a good while to become good at handling it and using it in the most effective way . Do little jobs for all your friends and family and let everyone know what you do , the more people you talk to the more will come your way . When I First started out I did a bit of volenantry work in a forest and this helped me no end as it gave me many hours working my saw , this really paid off as when it came to my first paid employment If you really want to go for this, be really determined , love the work you do give every opputunity You get 200 % effort Dont give up . I started from the beggining and worked my sox from my first phone calls going through the yellow pages trying to get my first foot in the door to now where my phone just keeps ringing with people wanting work doing. it's the best job in the world and I have never looked back . Good luck and all the best littletree
  12. Hi there no you don't need to do it again I wish y all the best on a new job soon . If you have a chainsaw you could start off by doing jobs for friends and family then do some sub contract work as a groundy . And it will soon build up from there . All the best littletree
  13. Wow those are excellent times ,sounded like it was an excellent show. see you all in Yorkshire . Littletree:thumbup:
  14. Hi all I new this topic would come up at some point and it's good to discuss it . It's a shame y have a couple of lazy workers but from a females point it will be very rare in arb as being a girl y really really have to want to do the job . as for myself as a groundy and climber I work my sox of every day I am able to do the same as the lads , for me it's easy as l love my work and I am very fit to match . I love using all the big and small saws I am allways first at the large log ring luging session and give the lads a run for there money Naturally there is a difference between men and women men are stronger and heavier . I am small and very light so If I need a hand I just ask it does have some advantages though , I can go up some trees some of the chaps could not go .But When it comes to the big thick stuff up the tree i leave that for the chaps to do or at least till it gets to the ground then I go for it with the big one . When it comes the chipping and brashing I pull drag and chip double what I need to but love every bit of it . As for females having a pee on the job we just adapt I have sevrale different methods depending on the situation , bushes are allways the prefered method if that' an option then my little tarporling works wonders itacts like a mini tent  now that will get you all laughing Littletree
  15. Yep me too I have the same real big problem and have been through the lot t. So went in surch to find find a solution and I came up with these . They are the big blue marygolds I buy them in large and then I put a tiny thin pair of fleece gloves underneath these are used in the fishing and saling industry as are compleatly waterproof And oil prof and cost about 2.50 a pair . They are bulky for climbing but for grounding in the wet and cold they are my soulition to my fingers falling off they work They work . I get a few smiles at work but it's a small price to pay . When it's dry and warm I use a brown leatherette type glove not sure what they are called as they come as standard ppe with my rope access job but they are ecxellent and are great for climbing but the do let water but I lv them all the best littletree

  17. Hi there I saw a pair at woodfest and tried them on in the A cat and loved them I wanted a pair but they did not have the small size I needed at that time . Where did y get yours from ? as not many places seem to stock them. Thanks littletree:thumbup:
  18. Hi all Ian has kindly put together a pole climbing website the site is located at Poleclimb.com many thanks Ian littletree:thumbup:
  19. Hi there I have the same problem I hate glasses they give me an instant headace and tried all forms of eye protection . In the end I have settled for a full face clear visor as I can lift it up when I am not cutting and just use it when I need it it stops all the bits but the only downside is rain The way to stop all clear visors and glasses goggles from fogging up is to get some neat washing up liquid or a use a regular soap bar get a cloth and smear the soap or liquid inside all over the inside of the visor then leave to dry for a couple of mins then polish it with cloth and you will be fog free . Y will need to re do it as and when but it works a treat . On the outside y can get some stuff from halfords that makes the water role off in tiny droplets. Hope this helps All the best littletree:thumbup:

  23. Had a great time at the three counties show and set my new personal best time of 14.9 seconds to the top. I had 2 other Very very strong competitors in the ladies devision and it was very close some of the climbs by mili seconds and at one point I thought I was done for . but I managed to pull my best time ever on my last climb for the final and come home with a lovley cup so am delighted . I will have lots of work to do for the next show in yorkshire to make sure I can pull more times like that . Littletree:thumbup:
  24. Sadly the show has one big thing missing we lost our poles they were taken down not to be replaced . A real shame but hope y all have a great time at the show . Littletree
