Life has a perverse tendancy of doing that to you: just when you think all's going well, something happens to make you question everything! I'm very sorry to hear that about your mum. No matter what the outcome, you will make the best choices and come out all the stronger for it. Take care.

That's a very familiar feeling! I've found a similar story amongst a lot of LA types (yes, I know that's not the same as you Higher Beings at The Corp' ): The original post had been withdrawn and the only option was to accept the more supervisory role or face redundancy.

There have been many posts about what got people into tree work, but I have been wondering what makes other people stop the "on the tools" part of the job and move on to something less physical. Was it a conscious decision? Was it forced on you by circumstance? Do you regret the move? I'd been a climber / arborist for only about five years when the bloke that I was working for totally fubar'd the felling of a 20m cherry and ended up dropping it on me and his truck! Luckily, the truck took most of the impact and I got away with only a badly sprained ankle and the Mother of all headaches. However, it seriously affected me mentally and I'm not ashamed to say it scared the cr*p out of me - to the extent that I had to rethink what I was doing in my career. To be fair, I was never that great at climbing and this was the impetus to move on to doing something more office based. I don't regret the move, but I really miss the physical work and being part of a close team.

I was always told to avoid burning cherry laurel as it contains cyanide. I don't know how accurate that is. Try it and see: if you turn blue then it's true

I can't be the only one thinking that if you get done for speeding in a 30 then your observational skills NEED to be improved??? Unless it was an unmarked police car that stopped you, it goes to show that you were not paying enough attention to the road ahead.

It's hard to tell from that pic, but it could be Chondrostereum - Silver leaf. It's more common on Rosacea species but it has a wide range of hosts.

The way that I read it (or skimmed it, more to the point) is that the self employed come under the "exemptions", but it doesn't go on to say what the law is for them. Hm, I might have to google this one.

Go to the paperclip (attachments) and click to bring up another window. Click "browse" and sort through your files until you get to the pic you want. Double click and repeat the process until you have all the pics you want. Click "upload". If your pics are hi resolution then you may have to wait a while. So twiddle your thumbs for a bit.... Preview and post. Kinda like what Skyhuck posted ;-) Et voila!

A lot depends who you are going to be working for. I've done exactly 7.5pd working for a LA (that's hours spent at work, not actual work...!) and then 12+pd during the summer when subbying. Do you intend to be self employed / sole trade or PAYE?

I've been meaning to get my own copy of Stratagies for literally years, but never seem to get around to it! The other book looks pretty good. The contributors list looks impressive and it seems to collate a lot of info into just the one tome. Be sure to give us an update when you have ploughed through a few chapters What's the Myerscough online resourse like for arb related reading?

I guessed you were . The cost for even basic survey kit can be quite frightening, especially when you have to start from scratch and you don't have a client base to speak of. The amount of freelance surveying that I undertake doesn't warrant a large financial outlay, but that doesn't stop me WANTING all the shiny hi tech gizmos that you mention At some point the line has to be drawn between want and need. And experience and knowledge is the key factor to whatever kit you choose to use.
