  1. The figures above seem about right. Is your mate based in newton abbott?
  2. Very very rarely. I have no heating, draughty windows, and quite often ice on the insisde of the windows in the morning. Same goes for Olly my 8 year old. Having said that, its always toasty in bed after a few secs, and none of us ever get coughs and colds.

    660 v 395XP

Much as i love my 390xp, the 660 is an AWESOME machine!
  4. Used vegetable oil. On every saw including the 0888 with a 4' bar, and when milling. Get it free or very cheap from the chip shop/ poub/ my fryer. More eco than anything castrol produce for the likes of oregon and stihl etc etc.
  5. Yeah that was absolutely hilarious!! you can see it on you tube too!

    4x4?

The new engine is the transit puma or whatever, the 2 & 300tdis were land rover (built in brazil though i think!).
  7. Dying dongle- never used to have the problem:thumbup1:
  8. Matt- i dont know where you got this from, but it is pretty misguided im afraid. Willow and poplar make excellent firewood, as does alder. if, as Skyhuck says, they are dried properly, they burn VERY cleanly with alot of heat and very little ash left over. Cedar is not a very good wood to burn in the grand scheme of things, larch being a better softwood for example, although cedar will burn better than hemlock for example. Cedar is also a pretty soft timber in general, especially thuja plicata, although cedar has excellent decay resistance. cedar of Lebanon is the 'poor cousin' to a certain extent though, as it can be brittle, rendering it pretty useless as a structural timber, but excellent for the likes of cladding etc. you certainly couldnt put western red cedar down as flooring- you can push your thumbnail into it. Those funky log benches in your pic (very nice BTW) are probablly hard due to the exposure they have had- alot of wear and weather. When green it is very soft. Alder has very good rot resistance underwater or in boggy ground- very good fencing stakes in marshes etc too.
  9. Yeah TCD has one of those 4work things, and although he admits its has limitations as described above, he is esssentially pleased with it. His is a double cab though so not much chance of overloading.
  10. A week or two now. I wonder if it just my wireless dongle struggling with the large amount of info from AT- the bank, hotmail and tv guide dont have so much to download, and the dongle is getting hot... i was wondering more along the line of whether there were any settings on mozilla that may have made a difference.

    4x4?

Totally agree with the engine bit and the breakages- it is usually abuse as you say. Thinking about it the r380 gearbox is pretty w ank, in fact since the series 2a they havent really developed a truly tough gerabox, I mean it is pretty much accepted that at 80000 miles your main box is on borrowed time unles you only ever use your truck as a car. they are, however, EXTREMELY cheap to replace.
  12. Tricky choice. If the LR/ ranger/ chevy didnt suit then maybe a hilux? Tougher than l200.
  13. depends on the 4x4 and what tyres are on it too:sneaky2:
  14. Steve- its taking me nearly a minute to open anything. I am running firefox on vista ultimate. Any ideas? I have 1503 mbps download according to the router, and everything else opens up as fast as i would expect:confused1:
  15. There are better 4x4s out there steve. I havent heard alot of relly good stuff about l200s when put to heavy work. A ranger would prob be better, and cheaper i believe too. They tow really well, and have a good payload. As you now i dont really rate anything other than the green oval for work ability (payloads, towing abilitty etc etc) but having used most of them at some point I would recommend the ranger (or mazda b2500) in its place. Well worth looking at. Parts for mitzis are expensive. Worth taking into account.

    4x4?

Interesting thread. I would have one of those toyota pick ups over a defender if they were availabl over here. The jap offerings in Gb are just not man enough for the job in my opinion. For some reason al the jap pick ups seem to be made on chassis that are a joke- the rear aend of hiluxes are made from pissy little channel, and IIRC the back of an isuzu trooper is paper thin 4x2 box section. Yet they build the Landcruiser like a battle ship and fill it with seats. Although they have a reputation for ultra reliability, I dont find this to be the case. Once these jap things are put to HARD work day in day out they fail in spectacularly expensive ways, and on the sterength issue again, I bent my hilux in the middle. I have to say that i believe landrovers have an excellent engine and drivetrain, but is a victimof its own ruggedness- the attitude being that they will take anything you throw at them , and therefore do so, resulting in abuse and subsequent necessary repair. How i see it is that in the UK if you want what is basically a glorified tractor you get a landrover, if you want a glorified car that has 4x4 you get a hilux. If you want a cheap 4x4 you buy a ranger or l200 etc. Where landrover fall down is all the crap they bolt onto it- rubbish electrics, poor quality interior fittings and bodywork fabrication. I am thiking about replacing the chassis of my defender in the next 12-24 months with a galvy one. The garage said it would be better built, as LandRover build with a 1/2 " tolerance!!!! In a car (and jap 4x4 etc etc)these tolerances are fractions of millimetres, thus with landrovers you get the famous leaks and draughts etc etc. I went wading with my bro in his landcruiser and the water was over the windows, yet none came in. WTF are LR playing at. This is the point- with a defender you are buying a glorified tractor, end of- refinements havent been discovered at Lode lane yet!
  17. I did mine before it was nicked recently, and i dont remember 2 springs. Besides, if a spring isnt snapped you dont really need to replace them, unlike the rubbers which get worse over time.
