Billy- are you using both ends of your lifeline to climb with? Thus having 2 anchorpoints available at all times? If so you dont need your sidestrop, as the 'spare' end of your lifeline will be used when cutting. If not, then i whiolly agree with Rupes comment, and in answer to your question, I very very rarely cut without my sidestrop- only when i already have 2 anchor points, such as when branch walking etc.

I cant believe you heathens are suggesting grinding out that root ball:001_rolleyes:. Cut the tree up as you like- thats all rubbish- and clean up the roots. Try and keep as big a lump off it as you can handle/ move/ get out of the garden for tuning/ carving!

As TCD correctly states, the tractor is powering the whole rig through the PTO shaft, running to a huge hydraulic pack at the front end of the unit. Buzzsurgeon is right- the fendt, a 930 vario IIRC, is way underpowered for that chipper, even though that tractor is chipped up past 400bhp, again IIRC!! It nearly stalled when they first engaged the PTO, and at one point the operator was a bit keen, and nearly stalled it whilst feeding it. Having said that, although the in-speed may appear slow, the huge amount of chip it produced was constant, regardless of how fast the machine was loaded, so although it appeared to be struggling all the time, it was producing ALOT of chip.

Try living here- scorrier woods was the first hotspot. There is aklot of misinformation being spread about this pathogen- as much because those that are investigating it are in the dark themselves as the fact that like every disease of this virulence- be it ramorum or foot and mouth or BSE- there is a huge amount at stake if the true extent gets out into public knowledge. Those investigating it (Ann Payne and her cronies essentially) are themselves on a steep learning curve about his pathogen, which also aids the (unintentional) spread of misinformation. I have seen this on probably 20 different species of tree, in all sorts of locations- including on a southern beech in a large national trust garden. One of the original investigators in this country was round at my place a couple of weeks back (his missus is a customer of my missus') and he was basically saying that nobody really knows anytyhing definitive about ramorum yet. They are still finding new ways for it to spread on an almost daily basis. This isnt over, and its not helped by people chipping the infected plants, or DEFRA allowing the like of me to receive infected sawlogs under licence, so long as we agree to burn all arisings on site and clean equipment after use.

Yeah last year- shouldnt have been in the tree in the first place.....electric wires live below. The tree was a medium sized (70') radiata to deadwood and remove a couple of limbs, but I allowed the wires to really get to me and bottled it after lunch. Went back the next day with a clearer head and better plan and nailed it. Was it at Escot matt? It must have been scary as for you to bottle i would have thought!!

I find this astonishing, and can only assume you bought abused models, or were unlucky. I have yet to meet anyone who deals with landrovers all the time who has a single good thing to say about the Td5. However, in the world of hard working defenders (imerys clay pits in st austell- almost certainly the most punishing environment in the world for vehicles) the 200tdi is seen as king of reliability. I run a 300tdi and it will pull my rig at 70+ all day long, with a roofrack and oversize mud terrains, loaded with chip a towing an 9" vermeer chipper!. I test drove a Td5 hicap a few years ago, and when empty it pulled very well, with an empty 12' ifor behind it it was a gutless P.O.S.

No no no you are all wrong- including you rupe. What you want is a long line of trampolines placed opposite the trees, and as you fel a tree it will hit the "trampodeck" (thats a registered trademark BTW before any of you get any ideas) and bounce right out of the site and you could then reverse a bicycle powered chipper up into your LDV-transit and with the help of twenty oompaloompas you would have the job done......but under no circumstances am i going to give you any idea as to whether i have a unimog or how much i would charge you if i do have one.. Spoken like a true disco owner:lol: To a degree yes, but you dont have a salisbury rear axle, and the gearing is slightly taller for running on road....so you do seem to lose a bit of power, although the top end is better for on road cruising.

Although 4000kg is 500kg over weight, a defender will pi ss that. I reckon i am barely ever under 6.5-7 ton with chip box full and towing the vermeer, and I have been on the weighbridge at the quarry at over 8 ton many an occasion. No bother. Touch sluggish up the steeper hills, but you dont buy a defender for speed lol!

Ok- i have a landy, as most of you have seen, and have had hiluxes which were mickey mouse. The reason i said hilux was that the poster only wanted to tow 2200 kg. IMO there is NOTHING that will come close to a defender other than the commercial landcruiser that isnt available over here. Kat1e...get a defender, they are the best out there. The detractors are generally those who cant afford a landrover, or dont understand what it means to really work a vehicle.....if you do to a ranger/ hilux/ l200 etc etc what a landrover takes day in day out they WILL fail very quickly, and NONE of them are as capable off road, as they are designed primarily for on road, where as the defender is designed primarily for off road. You will pay more for a defender than anything else of the same age and condition, and thats for the reasons I have stated, but parts for land rover are VERY cheap. Good luck, as this will repidly descend into yet another thread of land rover versus all the others, as all these threads seem to nowadays.

Any Honda dealer of mowers etc etc should be able to get that exhaust, and if the control box works still then its very possiblt that a loose contact could be the problem. Ths is the joy of chippers- they vibrate soo much very little survives!

I have had about 36000 miles out of my mk1s on the front and they still have about half their tread left, and the mk2s look to bew doing the same. BTW I am usually loaded up, weighing approx 3.5-4 ton (oops!) and towing a 9" vermeer chipper.
