Health question for over 60's small time firewood producers

You mean your calves ache. Stretch them, along with as much else as you can be bothered with. Any tightness in the legs can give knee and hip problems so it's good to keep the whole lot in trim. A good combined calf muscle/achilles tendon stretch is to raise your foot against a skirting board while facing the wall. For more stretch push your hips forward rather than lean forward. Another possible cause of your issue could be your choice of footwear; worth a look and perhaps try something different; see if it helps in which case there's your answer. You're only a bit over 8 years ahead of me so I do speak from the position of someone whose own body has seen better days - oh yes! Certainly don't give up - that's for girls 😂 -

Usually! But there are many exceptions; compare willow to a mature yew for example. But that will have been fairly hard, yes. Luvverly firewood

Thor thought of that! At least some models - I had a Mignon - have a foot pedal that brings the blade down until it touches something, e.g. a hand; then it stops. To effect splitting you need both hands on the handle. In practice you use the pedal to get the blade to hold the log in place before using both hands to effect splitting but I found it painfully slow

Fair comment and I wouldn't employ someone to use my machine the way it is. It doesn't have auto return. If it had that I'd probably go the whole 'they're my hands, mind your own business' hog and rig up a foot pedal. At least I could have both hands on the log. Oh I wish...

Knowing how those things grow - that's not much in 7 years though the grass is probably slowing it - I'd take off the right hand stem at origin. The left stem will slowly straighten as it develops

I hope you're right. On a sentimental level I, as a true born Englishman, don't want to lose Scotland from the union; it's a beautiful country with so much to offer. On a more hardnosed level I struggle to see anyone gaining from independence except for the acquisition of smug grins north of the border
