1. Clive, have you asked the gent known to both of us who's from near Dartford? Jon
2. Not as classy as at RHS Wisley! A cracking morning for it and I'd like to go back in a week when the mature Katsura Tree is in full flower; it's just got a deep pink bloom at the moment.
3. Alex, if you want a piece of apple tree I'm taking down one near Reigate in 10 days or so: PM me if interested. Jon
4. That seems to be a qualified 'yes, it can be used' then. The job today didn't come off. The tree's actually bigger than I remembered ; it has three stems, two of which are 12"+ dbh. Steve, what's best? To saw a length down the middle to expose the inside and minimise the inevitable cracking?
5. Ha ha - so you didn't really miss out after all then Clive?! A bit of a shrewdy aren't you, getting us to do all the work for you.
6. Best he stops for a rest in Kent then and passes the lump on to someone from Surrey for the next leg of the trip...
7. I can understand it being popular with some spalting in it but how about when it's in good condition? Thanks.
8. Do any of you guys turn holly? I don't think I've seen pics of anything made from it but an experienced turner I know locally tells me it's nice stuff to use. I'm felling one today - probably 12" dbh and the thicker stuff is pretty straight. Seems a horrible shame to log it all up as a means of disposal; I'm not short of firewood supply and such stems cry out for a better end. Jon
9. I use a 20" bar: at 24" I'd be catching a steel cross member. I guess that's just the suspicion you had, hence your question.
10. I don't know what you class as expensive but I have this: it can hang off the tailgate of a pickup so once you cut a rack you just tip the whole lot straight into the buck. Joce Metal t/a The Irony O'it - Buckingham Woodstation
11. Still looking good and flat John. All well there? Jon
12. Beau, we burn 95% conifer here and have no problems. I skipped cleaning the flue last year; I never got round to it and anyway I get so little from the job I don't worry about it. I open everything right up for the first 20 minutes or so after lighting and again when we go to bed. TCD's dead right; dry conifer's the greatest. Lightweight to handle, catches light from a match almost and gives good heat. We just have to teach the World...
13. I've got two you can have; they came with other stuff in them as builders bags some years ago. They're in good nick. I'm in Caterham. Jon
14. ...there are apparently just two words in the English language that contain all five vowels in order. Facetious Abstemious
15. Deb, it may be worth speaking to Greenwaste near Biggin Hill. They have a 550hp Jenz machine though I don't know if they ever take it off site. They also do crane/grab lorry timber removal; I wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to pay someone to simply take the stems away and do with them whatever they want. Jon
16. Oops - me again. Are you after yew specifically or the pattern/colouring? Just thinking that the broader the range of species you'll consider the more chance of finding what you want. This is Monkey Puzzle though I'm afraid I don't have it now.
17. I think there's someone here who'll bite your arm off for it if it's going...!
18.

Morning Clive.

I'm sure you'll pick this up anyway but just in case not... I thought of you as you asked me to remember you if I ever encountered cedar, having failed to contact you when I did!

Cheers,

19. I'm going to show the top pic to clients who say 'well I suppose some woodchip just a couple of feet out from the trunk would be OK'!
20. Cavity; what cavity? I see no ships!
21. Great recovery there!!! That is something else Clive; stunning.
22. Quick derail but I'll shut up when I get the answer. I have a big Tirfor (5 ton pull): presumably that means that to double up I need a 10 ton snatch block...?
23. Noted!
24. Well you've gone and done it now with that comment! I've been offered several pieces at 4-5' x 18-20" that appears to be in very good condition for timber of that size. I just don't know whether it's worth the gamble of buying it and getting it milled up or selling on. Looks like I've found my market but comments from others are welcome. Clive, stop being so xenophobic; there's money at stake here!!!
25. Certainly is thanks; I'll forget all I've heard and get it right now.
