  1. Not all Crataegus have thorns. Are there no leaves around the base to tell you the genus at least?
  2. Result - the stick's going to the Wilts/Dorset borders for Gobby to work his magic on and the lesser sized material will go for firewood so even Huck will be happy!
  3. Hello Hopalong; how's it going?! Yeah, I'm sure I can keep the stick somewhere safe for you. What lengths would you want it? It will have to be cut for transport. Jon
  4. The rest of the tree will be!
  5. This needs to go to a good home. Due to commercial pressures it must leave site tomorrow but there will be an Avant there that can load it. There are at least 12' of straight single stem with probably another 2' before it bifurcates. Diameter 14-18". Any takers?
  6. Navara 11 plate, 104k miles getting 32-33mpg though there's a Powerbox under the bonnet that makes the going easier.
  7. That's a lot of machine to run with a 12hp engine. Surely the extra weight of an 18hp lump would be worth it...
  8. 'The instructions' allow for vertical or horizontal drilling into a stump so maybe the angle thing isn't as big an issue as you think.
  9. Yikes. How much/little are you going to need to remove to make it safe? That's a serious concentration of new habitat there.
  10. Yep, burnt a fair bit; no problems and it gives a nice heat. Enjoy. If you keep a log or two near the burner you can also have the pleasure of the scent as they warm up.
  11. ...to the nearby bonfire; that piece of ground is made for it.
  12. I think the insurance companies have their own shared database to check that: I haven't provided it for as long as I can remember. When changing insurers I've been asked how many years' No Claims and presumably that's checked before the new insurer sends out a proposal.
  13. It's dead cousin (no foliage) is on the A25 at Oxted
  14. You could ask Universal Trailers at Billingshurst; they turn over a lot of that kind of gear.
  15. Plainly no pup but tell him from me I think he's goodlooking!
  16. Sort of likewise here: funny how it's crap until the hardwood's gone, then suddenly it's not that bad. Being the eternal hoper (I wouldn't class myself as an optimist!) I just wonder if this spell of weather could be a gentle catharsis for softwood... I live in hope...
  17. Arborist - that'll teach you to call him past it!
  18. I went to Biggin Hill in '76, back in the days when the crowd were still allowed to see the aircraft without binoculars! A Lightning cruised down the runway at maybe 100' at near stalling speed, stood on its arse and the pilot hit the gas. The earth sure moved for me that day.
  19. A friend of mine is a Police dog handler with a Mallie - the soppiest dog out; he just wants to be everyone's friend but he gets away with it because he really looks the part. At first glance his head resembles slightly that of a Pitbull; it's all black, broad and attached to a very athletic body giving the overall impression of a high speed furry missile with a big bite.
  20. Just monolithed a 24" dbh specimen (no idea of the species - does Swedish Whitebeam grow to that size?) and left the lot for the owner as firewood. Have I just created a new firewood customer?!
  21. I wonder... I spoke to my preferred company years ago and in the conversation was the remark by them 'you wouldn't believe the amount of stuff we're sent that has no return details with it!'
  22. Indeed. I've been using http://www.iberkshire.co.uk/profile/442467/Windsor/Raytec-Saw-Service-Ltd/ for years for my Jo Beau blades. I haven't even the slightest grumble from a single occasion - spot on every time. Jon
  23. Are you against posting them? Quicker to do and gives you the whole country to choose from.
  24. The warnings related to the seedlings but strangely I now find no such warnings despite looking at half a dozen of the hits when Googling 'germinating Monkey Puzzle seed'. Perhaps knowledge has advanced and it was the growers and not the conditions that were at fault! Re losing seedlings to frost here's a guess at an explanation: in their native South American high altitude environment I would think the summers are hot so seedlings germinating in the spring would grow fast - fast enough to be of a size able to withstand the following winter's hard weather. Losing them to frost in this country must surely be down to outdoor planting while too small.
  25. I germinated a couple from seed a few years back and remember the dire warnings about sterile atmosphere etc due to very high susceptibility to fungal attack. The seedlings indeed did not survive but I can't remember if the reason for their demise was obvious. I too would tend toward gentle ventilation rather than none; stagnant air isn't usually a good idea. Instruction on growing conditions seem to emphasise keeping the young plants damp but on no account wet. Good luck with the cuttings and keep us updated.
