  1. Saw a Christmas tree in the window of a restaurant last week. Went to a club once and they'd put up a tree with lights on August bank holiday to remind people of their xmas arrangements:001_smile:
  2. Forty metres a day Midland! Superhuman or what.
  3. The black knobbly stuff is Kretzschmaria deusta. Nasty.
  4. No. What I'm saying is that a road should be safely passable at 30. If they want to lower the speed then lower the speed limit and police it. All they're doing is placing an obstruction in the road. Similar to a reverse pothole that people always want repaired:001_smile:
  5. I hate the things. If a road has a 30mph limit then the local authority should make sure it's safe to travel at that speed.
  6. Can you not just increase the size of the builders' opening. Just increased the size of mine to put a stove in.
  7. Thank you. Client has today had a meeting with Planning officer and an agreement has been reached. Felling has been agreed and replacement tree to be planted.
  8. Wonder if anyone can give an insight into this. No TPO on the tree but was retained in a domestic garden when the house was extended (planning condition) If the tree were to be felled then is the onus on the owner. What would be the likely outcome?
  9. If you're laying Midland or Derby then a chain a day is the accepted length. On a young hedge you'll do more. I would start at £10 pm plus materials.
  10. Two in fact. A big old Turner/Gandini on the tractor and a small towed Vermeer. It's all gone downhill since then The Gandini was flat out to capacity and finally sheared its shear pin two hours before the low loader arrived to bring everything back home.
  11. The black spots are the fungal infection. Nothing to do with aphids.
  12. Now if it's not a good tight Stafford, Derby or Midland it looks like a plane's crashed up a hedgerow:001_smile:
  13. It was my first year of self-employment. I didn't jump on the bandwagon but was asked to do some clear up work in Croydon. Went down with truck, tools, tractor loader and chipper. I just remember living in a caravan, heating water on a brazier we made for washing and what seemed like total devastation. As I remember it was followed by another big blow in early '88 which managed to clear some more loosened by the first storm.
  14. Saw one tonight in Buxton's. Evidently for the pro market! One hour battery time with 12 mps chain speed:001_smile:
  15. It's electomagnetic. You can dismantle them very carefully and have them relined. They have to be lined by a specialist as the linings are glued on cold to prevent damage to the electronics. You may find the bearings have contaminated your old linings with grease so you should replace those too. I think a genuine replacement is about £400.
  16. Well one of the mail protagonists has gone. After 35 years in this business the last few years of Arbtalk and esp Tony's writings have given me plenty to read and ponder. More than five years of college ever did.
  17. It was in a garden border under mixed trees which in turn borders woodland. It was the pointed tip highlighted in Phillips that suggested nanum.
  18. Pretty sure this is Geastrum nanum. Can anyone give a positive ID?
  19. I thought their selectivity was based solely on the fact that the active ingredient 'rolled off' parallel veined monocots but tended to stick to dicot leaves and wasn't absorbed by roots.
  20. Thirty years ago we were on the edge of their range in the Midlands. Occasional young birds at this time of year was all we saw but in the last ten years there isn't a village where you can't see them. I think at this time of year you see a lot of young birds being pushed out to find new territories.
  21. Thank you Jonathon. I'll have a word with her later and also measure the room.
