    Otters

I think there were only thirty authorised releases of otters 10 years ago. Many more have been reared and released by misguided 'nature lovers' in the intervening years. The fact is that their main food source (eels) is in serious decline in the UK and Europe. Where is the common sense in releasing a predator into the wild when there are insufficient food stocks to support it? They turn to less favoured prey to survive many of which are expensive fish stocks by angling clubs. They are also causing damage to breeding bird stocks reserves in East Anglia. I am all in favour of seeing otters thrive but should we not have our rivers in good health and capable of supporting them before releasing an apex predator into the wild.
  9. Think that story has done the rounds in various guises all over the country:001_smile:
  10. I don't think the climber was on the stem when it was pulled off.
  11. It's all down to greed. The supplier's greedy for profit and the consumer's greedy for wanting cheap, cheap, cheap with as little effort as possible. The consumer will quite happily sit and watch lifestyle cookery programmes on TV yet they'll stick ready made crap in front of their family. The average consumer is now a lazy lard a**" and as long as they exist then there's a ready market to be exploited.
  12. He could work here as a mediator:001_smile:
  13. Burning non-smokeless in a sealed stove? Years ago I had a Parkray and if I stoked it up with coal or wood I used to wait for the bang in the chimney and stove as the build up of unburnt gases suddenly ignited.
  14. Anagram of lasagne: nag sale.
  15. It's the only way I've ever climbed. Just make sure you're safe when you disconnect and pull through to change anchor point.
  16. From today...more of an oozicle
  17. Laid up at home today and took a phonecall on the landline. The caller claimed to be from Microsoft Technical support and proceeded to tell me me about various viruses and malware they'd found. I told him i didn't believe him but he said he could confirm my PCs ID no. etc. I gave him short shrift but it seems from a quick search that this is a scam originating in India and they direct you to a site that downloads some sort of program followed by a demand for payment. He sounded very convincing and I'm sure that many an elderly person, and not so elderly, could be taken in by this. May be prudent to warn family, friends etc.
  18. That's a lot of weight to bring to a halt. I once had one snap on me..24mm staplespun that sent a big lump of beech careering into the road.
  19. If it does that and you're happy then job's a good un. I hope it isn't more inferior than I think:001_smile:
  20. So it's just over £100 ex vat. Assuming they're marking up a standard 50% then they're buying from China @ £65-70. The Chinese manufacturer also makes a profit at this price. You have to wonder how they cut their costs and make a serviciable product! It is what it is: a cheaply constructed copy utilising inferior materials that is not designed to last.
  21. I never said they were death traps but the test does show the build quality of Chinese saws. In the event of a severe kickback I know which saw I'd rather be hanging on to.

    Pancakes

If you want the best pancakes ever then the water for the batter should be made from snow. My gran always used snow if it was lying on Shrove Tuesday. Plenty of snow this year:thumbup:
