  1. Good stuff. Also loved Fred J Taylor's books and writings in the Shooting Times.
  2. That's a massive 2p:001_smile: Nice. When my daughter was three she promised she'd never suck her fingers again. She's 17 next week and I still catch her doing it:001_smile:
  3. Is the plug lead pulling on the plug somehow. That might cause the insulator to crack.
  4. We used to do it with a caravan years ago. The novelty wore thin trying to heat a 5 gallon bucket of water to wash with in February:001_smile: The only trouble working away is the fact you tend to spend money in the pub to relieve the boredom on winter nights.
  5. We're from Stafford and travelling to Rochdale at the moment. We'll wave as we pass on the M6:001_smile: There's a chap locally called John Washbourn (Treeshape) . He has Mog and chipper. 01785 715875
  6. Never had a problem in 35 years. Aspen will have to drop in price before I consider it.....or regular fuel rise dramatically!
  7. I did the Shropshire and West Mids show a long time ago. 1991 I think. I put on a stand of a woodland scene showing tree sections with various defects, fungi etc with cutaway sections of decays and compartmentilisation. I borrowed a range of taxidermy of animals and birds and used them in relation to trees. I had a pro photographer take pics of my work and set them up on display boards with explanatory text. At the front of the stand I displayed tools and an oak log partly milled. It was hard work bringing it all together; hard work talking constantly for 3 days and hard work taking it all down again. I won the best stand in show and quite a lot of work from it so it was worth it but not sure I'd ever want to repeat it:001_smile:

    Chain oil

I've been using veg oil for two years now. No problems thus far.

    Chain oil

You can but what's the point of using all those additives as well. Isn't it supposed to be carcionegenic too?
  10. Agree totally. Maybe instead of explaining that very little needs to be done to a clients tree then we should 'big up' their worries and apprensions. Then again I like to sleep soundly even if I 'aint got no money:001_smile:
  11. Is it still on the approved list? I thought it had been banned.
  12. That's the theory but that was based on 3 strand back in the day! As for your fall length then you choose which trees do climb this way wisely. As I said before; I wouldn't condone the method.
  13. My first proper taste of tree work was spending the winter of '75 doing clearfell and thinning then the summer of '76 converting it all. I wanted to be a tree surgeon 'cos I thought I'd be irresitable to women:001_smile: Started doing day release at college; C&G Hort and Arb then saw a job advertised in GC & HTJ for an assistant tree surgeon. I got that, more college, and eventually came to be in charge. In '87 I went self-employed and have been since. Very abridged but that's it in a nutshell.
  14. From my early college days I was told that freeclimbing for initial access was ok but don't let the H&S police catch you. I still do it occasionally to gain access in suitable trees. You climb with harness and attached line making sure you wind through the branches in case you slip with your mate on the ground as anchor. Obviously I wouldn't condone the method but it does give a buzz.
  15. Thanks. I'll hang on to the wood to see what develops.
  16. Is this Gloeophyllum odoratum? It's on a topped-out Leylandii stem. Only one top out of 100s that had this. Bodies are approx. 2cm and hard.
  17. I thought they called it Yellow poplar or Amercan whitewood. Much easier sticking to botanical names:001_smile:

    any old oil

Interesting. I found this Choosing an Oil for Two-cycle Engines
  19. Nice trees. P. occidentalis is sycamore in the states?
  20. Horse chestnut buds are sticky but not sweet chestnut.

    Jazz Guitar

I used to try really hard to recreate the sound of a favoured musician. It doesn't happen. Everyone has their own sound and that's what makes everyone unique.
