  1. Try Ashwell Timber in Bulphan They recycle timbers from lock gates, docks, piers that have been in water for 100 plus years, I have seen samples and these tropical hardwoods look brand new (nearly)
  2. Paul We specialise is transplanting trees and hedges and would love to assist you. I will pm you.
  3. We look on taking on work experience as a small chance to uncover a diamond, but also to make the lad (never had a lass), learn about work. We pay them, as I want a good days work out of them, give them link between acceptable work and pay. It is summarised to them, thus, you are a cube, a perfect employee is a sphere, we are going to knock one or two corners off you and set you on the path of being a good employee. I got this from a friend who was not interested in a beautiful girlfriend, when asked why, he explained, she was too young (19yr, he was 30) he was just knocking a corner off for the next bloke. Timekeeping, attitude, being able to be trained (and ask if do not understand), doing a job well and being proud, being a good team member etc. The classic, "can you make the tea", the response "why me", then having to explain that for centuries the youngest has done so. Then send them to buy left handed screwdrivers and ask for long hard screws. For the same reason we do not pay apprentices what we govt says we can. We want a good days work and in return we pay.
  4. The high hedges regulations as I understand them are a hedge is two evergreen trees together.
  5. There are many different definitions of a Veteran Tree BS5837 "tree that, by recognised criteria, showing features of biological, cultural or aesthetic value that are characteristic of, but not exclusive to individuals surviving beyond the typical age range for the species concerned", with a note " these characteristics might typically include a large girth, signs of crown retrenchment and hollowing of stem" National Planning Policy Framework 2012 (annex 2) "A tree which because of its great age, size or condition is of exceptional value for wildlife, in the landscape or culturally" Natural England and Forestry Commission "They have cultural, historical, landscape and nature conservation value because of their age, size or condition"
  6. I am amazed by the number of trees and shrubs that are unhealthy. I have a duty to provide a safe environment for my team members and without the knowledge in this thread I am not. One plant I do know about and has not been highlighted enough is Giant Hogweed, this is much nastier than is being made out. It is a serious health hazard . The sap is an irritant, but it is also photo voltiac. Not only will it be an irritant but it is activated by sunlight. This activation occurs years after the original incident. "Human Health Effects: Giant hogweed represents a serious health hazard for humans. When the clear sap comes into contact with human skin in combination with ultraviolet radiation it can cause severe skin burns. Blisters occur within 24-48 hours after exposure and dense pigmentation of the affected area occurs approximately one week later. The skin reaction may remain sensitive to ultraviolet light for years."
  7. Mycorrhizal form a symbiotic relationship with the roots of (90% of plants) trees. Soil health is vital to the health of trees. Healthy soils support Mycorrhizal fungi and If the area is not occupied by existing trees I suggest you harness this relationship to extend the root system. Consider this on the root grow website ( I know they are selling the stuff) "A mature 100 year old oak tree has enough fungal Hyphae living on its roots to circumnavigate planet Earth".
  8. The shocking thing with a 54 plate L200 is the 9000ish mile service interval and high cost of each service (£800 ish) as gaskets have to changed each time.
  9. try http://www.breakeryard.com just put in your reg and identify the part you want, it is sent to breakers around the country, who then email you with costs.
  10. Straight Macrocarpa are not commonly commercially grown. Goldcrest is much easier to source, although not a large sizes.
  11. Can anyone recommend a Unimog mechanic or Unimog friendly garage around Portsmouth please?
  12. Thank you Arborscape Woodcrafts for your beautiful prize of a pen. Stunning! Will be getting a fountain pen from you for my birthday!
  13. This is appears to be a tree that has grown with a lean. If so; it is a leaning tree, this is natural. It will have compensated by adjusting it's root system to support the lean. Now it's canopy is clear of the trees, this will adjust. If you try to get it vertical, you could damage the root system. Visualise the root system as a plate for this explanation. If you bring the tree to vertical you will break/stretch the roots in the plate. You could reduce the weight of the canopy by thinning and you could put a stake to the rear of tree to hold it in it's current lean. It is a leaning tree, you should only be concerned in my view it the lean increases. Take a picture to compare the lean and look for any soil movement or cracks that indicate the root plate is moving. Go into a woodland and see the leaning trees in there.
  14. We are not Tree Surgeons, but I must comment on this hard working/under pressure aspect. Albeit from a different point of view. A BP site we were working on. All the usual masses of RAMS/Meetings/Supervision and unbelievable H&S on site. Their top H & S man and his oppo, came upto our foreman and said, "We've been watching you; we are concerned over manual handling. We think you are working too hard and not having enough breaks! Our foremen replied with "Thank you, but this is who we are, this is what we do, please do not compare us to how you feel after a couple of hours gardening and thanked him for his concern" Did make me think, that all they were doing was exemplifying the clients duty of care to their subcontractors. Which is often lacking (once the paperwork boxes have been ticked).
  15. We tried to build one, created several prototypes as there are slight variables within the initial chimney. Thought we had cracked it, it worked as advertised only 5% of time, rest it was more akin to a open fire. We tried this around 18 months ago, there were only sketches on the web. No measurements. If someone sells a kit or you can get plans it would be worth it. We now have log burner with massive doors and that is too efficient!
  16. We have a 15 plate. very good apart from it is not a 3 man cab for anything over very short distances. Also unloaded the suspension allows you to feel every leaf in the road. Not encouraging over loading, but it does not show when loaded.
  17. Autoglass have monopoly in the UK after the other (auto windscreens) went bust (since re-born but much smaller). We had a chip on a windscreen of a new Hyundai, a director called them in, they said they could not repair it and quoted £1300 to replace it. We took it to a local windscreen company who mended the chip for £40. I do not use them because they are a monopoly
  18. you could try root pruning to restrict size. That is how bonsai trees are created. I know of a Swedish lady who in the 70's came to the UK with a Swedish Birch sapling in her handbag. After replanting it in ever larger containers, it ended up in a plastic dustbin. Thereafter every time it split the dustbin, it was repotted (after root pruning) into another plastic dustbin..... When I saw it, it was a perfectly formed 12ft high tree.
  19. nothing that can hold a debit / credit card or cash come to that any device that can connect to the internet in my case; it would be alot cheaper for me
  20. Why are Tree Consultants (numerous examples) are giving Horse Chestnuts a SULE of 20-40 years? I have heard and seen in print the commonly held belief that Leaf Miner and Bleeding Canker spell the end of this species in the UK with a much shorter timescale.
  21. Two basic guidelines when selecting; Plant only varieties you like eating Make sure they x pollinate or self fertile
  22. The bridge was undergoing maintenance, the 'rollers' that allow it to expand and contract has been removed. The lorry driver with the digger, thought it looked tight and had pulled into hard shoulder and slowed right down. As I have been informed he hit it at very low speed.
