  1. When it gets dry or hot, water. If the root system has been compromised it has less ability to collect water. Water heavily, i.e. sprinkler for 30 mins plus.
  2. There is a comedian round these parts, whose wife in response to him having a mistress(apparently) drove around with U ME IM
  3. We have this issue. There are no external certificates for Tree Moving, Hedge Moving, Air Spade, Planting large trees. We self certify competence (card with competence and name, linked back to training records) The three times that this has been challenged they were asked to find the right courses for us, in all cases they came back and said when they asked, our name kept on coming up and accepted our ability to self certify.
  4. I would suggest: 1) Ask the client for their preferences / dislikes - no point having an arboretum of trees the client detests! 2) See what would thrive on the land (including protecting from Deer, rabbits, etc). 3) Check the client has the resources over the next five years to care for the trees to assist their establishment. 4) Ensure the trees have the space to mature (including layout /avenues/ vistas....) Right tree, right place. 5) Could be themed, geographical (native/american/chinese.. trees), leaf type, species, bark, autumn colours, age (trees from the age of dinosaurs / by age of introduction to Europe) or just a "riot" of different trees. 6) I like the idea of planting very long lived trees as opposed to those of short lived trees. Leaving a very long legacy!
  5. It is an Halesia, go back when it is in flower, had one (monticola) on our stand at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, in flower, it was stunning.
  6. I was walking down an avenue of trees today with a potential client. The was a gap (one tree on either side at the angle). It was explained to me that they had been killed by the energy in the ley line that runs through there. I was then asked to recommend trees that could withstand the energy of ley lines. Any ideas (the client is always right) ? Anyone heard of this before ?
  7. The day started by unlocking the tea hut and finding a bird had roosted in the shrouded padlock overnight and left me a present. Ho hum I thought Went to the sink to clean my hands and managed to get a bit of it on my shirt and it would not wipe off. Bo**cks I thought The start of a crap day, but it just got better and better although I am still wearing the suspicious stain.
  8. It's a Eucalypt, it does not matter it it is live or dead, fell it!
  9. I am not knocking English drivers / workers, there are masses of brilliant ones but this seemed to be a good example of the higher prevalence of workers with better attitude from eastern Europe than found in English ones. Somehow our society in recent years has produced more poor workers (especially attitude) than previous. When you think what the United Kingdom achieved in the past few hundred years, with a small population, the decline is stunning.
  10. We have been unloading and planting very large trees (2 per artic) over the past few days. Day 1 4 Polish Drivers all without exception got their trailers ready for unloading and helped us unload and took their complete roofs off their trailers (it's easy to get the roof 90% off, but problematic to do the last 10%) Day 2 2 English Drivers, neither lifted a finger to help, both refused to take their roofs completely off, causing a delay of 5 hours, giving numerous excuses as why they could not do it. Eventually hey presto they could do it. 2 Romanian Drivers, same as Polish drivers. One took offence of our insistence of helping him, telling us in perfect English that he has never had help getting his lorry ready to unload yet and was not going to start today. Embarrassing as proud Englishmen.
  11. Look up Yorkshire Mafia for suppliers in Yorkshire / for Yorkshire They have their own Airline: [ame] [/ame]
  12. Two Tree Surgery Companies in SW Essex have been burgled (once twice after replacing the csaws). The thieves are only targeting the saws and are adept at beating all types of security. These are professional thieves that will move from one area to the next, watch out!
  13. We have transplanted thousands of trees since the mid eighties and agree with Tree Mover. Essentially, the tree has to be moved with the right sized spade and then looked after (primarily watered) whilst it establishes in it's new location. Root pruning prior to moving can help you move a slightly larger tree with the same sized rootball.
  14. The Right to Light Law was written in Victorian times when homeworkers in cities were having the light the needed to undertake their work denied by new taller and closer buildings (visualise Victorian slums). Therefore you have no right to light unless the room which is in shade is also the one where you undertake your main source of income and the shade is sufficient to stop you doing your work. The human rights bill allows anyone to complain about anything and a solicitor could argue that it his clients right to have light, also he could argue anything is his clients right, as far as I am aware a successful prosecution has never happened on this under this stupid law. High hedges only applies to two or more conifers close enough to form a hedge (clapham omnibus definition applies to hedge). It does not apply to deciduous trees, even though Beech can hold its leaves or bamboo (grass). You can plant eg/de/eg/de or as individual specimens in a double staggered row (with a a decent gap between each row / each specimen.
  15. We had two "gents", one in hi viz pull into our yard, (after thinking it was empty) in the above vehicle reg BT06 NOH. When approached they sped off. Plod informed
  16. Google Quotatis Complaints Steer well clear. Use Google xxxx Complaints on anything that raises your concerns, you can do this whilst on the phone and tell them why you are saying no. The only reaction I get is them putting the phone down
  17. Padlocks are easily compromised, even if you buy expensive ones. If you shroud them sufficiently to protect the padlock they use the strength of the shroud to break the padlock. We know, they did it to us. We have a solution that no-one has mentioned, it is hidden, internal and stronger than a padlock, pm for info.
  18. Not so much back in time, but if I had the ability: Be able to count cards.
  19. Looking for wisdom! I am considering causing dieback to a trunk of a twin stemmed Oak. This is in preference to just cutting the stem off; as I want the tree to withdraw it's reserves in the stem, to benefit the rest of the tree before cutting the stem off. We will then transplant the rest of the tree (not with a Tree Spade but using a larger rootball). The stem is growing much faster than the main stem (it has been monitored for 5 years). The stem is around 20cm diameter and the main stem is 40cm diameter. If the stem was left in place, in time the union with the main stem will fail / be a cause for concern. What is the best way to achieve this? Ring barking but leaving a section of of bark (if so how much) ? Constricting the whole stem with a giant jubilee clip type of thing? Another way? Has anyone done or seen anything similar either undertaken on purpose, by accident or a weird natural event?
  20. Look on commercial vehicle security websites, many have specific pages for each manufacturer of vehicles on what you have to do to overcome the gaps in security that each vehicle is produced with. We looked at buying a new ford transit but thought it stupid to then have to spend £400-£600 to make it secure. for example: Transit Custom [2012 > Present] | ProtectAVan
  21. One thing in it's defence, when you are working away from base. I find no better way of finding local suppliers / services. This is because it is geographically based. Google adds too many other factors into the answer (how popular etc).
  22. Criminals. Use a three strike and out (into a black hole). Convictions are very rare when compared to crime, if they were caught for 3 it means they committed hundreds without getting caught/ convicted. 3 times gives them enough time to see the error of their ways / grow out of nefarious activities.
  23. Ebola is very hard to catch, the poor health systems, lack of basic infrastructure combined with traditions such as washing of and touching (dead) bodies, witchcraft, expense of treatments, suspicions of 1st world medicine has resulted in the slow spread in west africa. In a first world health / infrastructure / knowledge location, it would be easily monitored and contained. If you want to worry about something worry about an airborne disease such as a new strain of flu. I am astounded by the selfless bravery of our (and other countries) health care professionals who volunteer to go to west africa and help these people, placing themselves in danger. There is screening on exit in west africa and on arrival in the UK. In addition these are people with 100% knowledge of ebola, who would recognise the symptoms, but there is a 2 week (?) incubation period when people are not infectious before symptoms appear. If it was a problem to treat infected patients here, why would they take someone from Scotland to north west London for treatment to a hospital immediately surrounded by thousands of houses/flats ? Shurely they would take them to a remote treatment facility?
  24. Worked in a office in a factory. New YTS (male) trainee was told to go down to the (90% female shop floor) and ask for a long hard screw. Fortunately the shop floor was viewable from the office, shame there was no sound, we watched the lad being passed from one lady to the other. When he came up and explained he hadn't been able to get one, he said they all thought one of them had one but in the end they said we had one in the office.
