    Oak buds burst when daylight hours reach a certain point, Ash buds burst at a certain temperature. Generally the lenght of daylight needed for the oak burst is reached before the air temp that triggers ash burst.

    Wildlife and countryside act is long gone, its CROW (2000 ish) now. Sorry to be a pedant. Part of the job discription for the proposed works will list what is important, and dont be afraid to ask if you can not ID it. There will be a long list of mitigating measures to be put in place whilst the work is carried out.

    I have used the double winch method, it also means that you do not have to go slogging back up the hill dragging the winch cable, the winch does that for you.

    Use a drag line attached to the trunk to be winched down. The drag line goes from the trunk up to a pulley and then back down to the bottom. You can either tie on a smaller log to counter balance it, or run it through a friction device. Or find someone with a double winch, and use the break on one to slow the other

    I love bees, but not when you discover a nest at face level at 12" distance. They were our native black bees as well.

    hold your arm at 45 degrees, walk back until the top of the tree is visable by your fingertips, add a couple of feet, and that will be where the tree will fall. (Unless you mess up the hinge)
