  5. At last, yesterday was the first day of winter sunshine!!!! A beautiful day reducing a big Macca overlooking the stunning North Devon coastline, got some awsome photos (will post when I have camera). All the staff were in better spirits, and we even got to dry some kit out as well. forcast recons it will be like this till Monday at least, winner.
  6. If you do mess up on a quote, and you have staff out working on day rate at least have the balls to admit it to them that you made a mistake and take the hit. At a previous company I worked for if you rang to say the job was going to over run the boss would hang up and come tearing out to site and start barking all sorts of obscure language! and try to make us rush, this is when accidents happen (and a couple did). I just used to stand there in silence and look straight into his eyes, wound him up somethig cronic

  13. Put it into fancy packaging and sell it as cornish face masks, the grockles will lap it up!!! I sold a large ring of oak balanced onto a smaller stem to make a table and sold it during the appledore art week for £70 Some people have more money than sense!
  14. search and PM Gibbon, hes based just outside of Exeter, may be able to help.
  15. That was copied and pasted from the RHS website. I have seen it starting to appear in a few oaks down this way recently, and when in Leicester we had to fell a few very mature oaks with it http://www.charnwood.gov.uk/news/2008/03/07/scientists_investigate_charnwood_oaks
  16. Bleeding canker is an infection of the bark of several trees by a number of different species of the fungus-like micro-organism Phytophthora, causing the affected bark to bleed a dark sticky fluid. Cankers may be present at any time of year. Trees commonly affected in the UK include Aesculus (horse chestnut), Tilia (lime) and Alnus (alder). Horse chestnuts continue to be affected by Phytophthora bleeding canker at a relatively low level, but have recently been affected by a huge upsurge in cases of bleeding canker caused by a bacterium. Holly is affected by Phytophthora ilicis, which is more commonly the cause of leaf blight but can also infect bark, causing cankers. Alder is affected by the newly described P. alni, which has been shown to be a new species formed by the hybridisation of two other species, neither of which affects alder. This is a worrying development and spread of the disease is being monitored by Forest Research scientists.
  17. Those bloody willows....a right pain in the glass!
  18. Matt, Will give you a call later when im not at work!!!
  19. Andy's a really good worker, I have had him on site a few times and may(if the directors give me a budget!!!) be looking to take him on FT in the new year.
  20. Afternoon people, im after a bit of help here. I got a phonecall from the local rag this week, they want to come and do an article on using proper tradesman(no funny coments please:001_tongue:). I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of the arb industry in my local area. Has anyone got some recent stats on chainsaw injuries etc? Ive looked at the HSE and FC websites, but all the info seems a bit dated. Also if there is anything else people would like me to try and get into the article please let me know. I have contacted other local firms and let them know what is going on, and that it is not going to be a big PR thingy for the company I work for (I havent even told my bosses about it for that reason). I am just purley interested in letting the public know about the industry and the benifits of using ledgit Arb companies, that way hopefully everyone can benifit
  21. Hmm we will see. Ive got some work comming up with the local paper down here to try and promote the use of ledigit tree care companies, just simple stuff like customers asking to see proof of certs and insurance, getting a few quotes in etc. They are also interested in the issue of Phytophthora ramorum that seems to be sweeping across the county.
  22. Will he just be pushing the use of AA approved contractors? What about us guys that are not but work to high standards? There is only one approved contractor in North Devon (who are not even based here), and they do seem to get the lions share of LA work etc.
  23. will match your new silky john
  24. Looks good, although you need specialist training to use a tourniqet!!! I can use one whilst dealing with an emergency at sea on the lifeboat, but as soon as I set foot on-shore Im not qualified!!!!
  25. not surprised, they only come in packs of 5 or 7! would need to by a tonne of them to get up a decent sized tree.
