  1. Go on then, I will rise to it. What were the correct channels? What you described at the start of this thread was a mixture of several regulations some of which do not apply to "O" licencing, and none of it fits with the published exemptions. The entire thing reeks of BS to me but I will withdraw and apologise profusely when you show us all the "correct channels".
  2. I had one on a seven and a half tonner, it was fixed at the front and had a pocket stitched along the width at the back, the pocket had a length of 25mm box in it and at each end a tape for a ratchet strap, the ratchet head was welded to the rear upright post and the strap ran over a round bar welded to the inside of the rear post at the top. When you tensioned the strap the round re directed it to pull the sheet tight
  3. Jonny is looking for a cheaper way of doing things but he doesn't have one of your "I am an arborist" general exemptions:laugh1:
  4. Be carefull what you buy, I was once the proud owner of a defender that had been caught on red twice by a previous owner and had a marker on the computer I was on first name terms with the blokes at the local stop check.
  5. Same here, the building owners wont allow it because their policy has an exclusion on storing fuels. I could probably build an external fuel storage a minimum of 5m from the building but I am sure to run into problems with bunds and fuel thieves.
  6. Nice work that, I will be even more impressed if its still alive
  7. Nothing is impossible, but often lack of effort makes it seem that way
  8. Have fun getting dirty mate
  9. It might help folks if you said what area you are looking at
  10. The main thing HMCE is worried about is revenue loss. Other authorities have their own mandates and agendas. VOSA kicked my arse for running a tractor and trailer to shift round timber. Had to explain myself to the traffic commissioner to save my "O" licence.
  11. Blasting needs a lot of air, a screw (hydrovane) compressor is your only candidate, as well as that and a blasting pot you will need an air fed helmet, you can do without for a one off job but a balaclava and goggles is for the brave. A 10 gallon pot is a small thing to take a wagon chassis on with I have owned blasting pots in the past, now I get a bloke in to do the job.
  12. Bring back steam, the trackside burned regularly, no need for cutting
  13. Agreed, but twice in the past I have been caught up in a visit on a building site, once I was there to give a quote so got a free pass, the second time they wanted to see all the paperwork and then some
  14. The HSE are of the opinion that you owe a duty of care to everyone, including yourself. The rules and regulations apply to the self employed one man band as much as anyone else
  15. They sent it through a bunch of mature Rhodies near me, it made a god awful mess
  16. Tree care on the rails? They call it vegetation management, bring on the big chipper and the flail train What area????
  17. Only if they specify it at the time of interview, if they then employ you (on the books) they become responsible for any renewals.
  18. Tack nail a vee shape on a board and drop the workpiece in that, it needs to be slightly lower than the thickness of the workpiece and you need the belt to travel in the direction of the vee.
  19. I had a go at sharpening a silky, just out of interest. The induction hardening goes deep enough that you can get a new edge in it and still retain the durability (depending on how bad it was to start with) I wasn't overly happy with the finish, it didn't glide like a factory finish but I keep one back for sacrificial works like cutting roots. I am saving all the wrecked ones and when I have enough I will forge them into a Katana:laugh1:
  20. You missed the point, you said they cant be sharpened yet they are sharp when they arrive so they must be able to sharpen them. Re sharpening is difficult to the point of becoming uneconomical but they can be sharpened.
  21. A pulley is far from a necessity, you can work perfectly well without one. There is every point learning the "old" way, everyone who goes up a tree should be able to tie and work off a three knot system even if they use another system
  22. An employer cant require you to have a first aid qualification unless they make holding it a condition of employment, once you are an employee the employer becomes responsible for your first aid training. The First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification is usually a three day course and an assessment. A single day course would be appointed person and has no formal assessment.
  23. Nope, both systems use one rope but single uses it single and double uses it doubled
  24. In a word, none
  25. I am sure I have seen that somewhere before............................. Is there a record for how many times the same picture appears in different threads
