  1. depends on how much you want to drag, how likely it is to snag on something, and if you are prepared to use it to destruction.... i'd count on 10:1 safety factor (if you're pulling hard and the bundle snags on a stump or summit) so with that in mind, with the 14mm you could drag a 325kg bundle without fear of snapping it too often...
  2. summit like this... 16mm Marlow 3 strand per metre lowering rope | F R Jones and Son or perhaps ebay staplespun 3 strand for larger dia stuff
  3. bit of staplespun polyprop 3 strand for dragging stuff... 16mm+ hardwearing and relatively cheap
  4. sure thats what you need mate? expensive waste of time for dragging things in a woodland (bundles of laurel perhaps?) as it has poor abrasion resistance...
  5. good luck fella, stihl are not known for their easy-going attitude towards warranty repair (not that husky are any better). the main issue being 2-stroke equipment is easy to abuse to death, and the signs of use and abuse are much the same, so its hard to prove anything in your favour...
  6. probably seized due to running for a long period on half throttle... saws are designed to create max power at full throttle, under load. and their carbs are jetted and tuned to achieve this. they are not meant to be run at half throttle... blip the throttle for that kind of cutting (not easily achievable when carving i know, i'm surprised carvers dont toast more saws..)

  10. the handle clamp on those brushcutters has always been a bit pony... and the more you use them the slacker they get, bit of tape should sort it tho
  11. if you modify your small saw that heavily, and custom build a full wrap handle... then i'll let you off:001_tongue:
  12. dogs, dawgs, spikes, whatever you call them, they are pointless on a small saw... they are to provide a pivot point when making cuts (big cuts with a long bar) once the saw is 'dogged in' you can let go of the top handle and push/pull on the rear handle pivoting off the dogs. 'big' dogs are to provide bite in thick barked trees (think 3'dbh+ doug fir with several inches of brittle bark.) a 40cc saw, doesnt have the torque or chain speed to be able to efficiently pivot on the dogs, nor will it be running a bar long enough to warrant pivoting with for accuracy, nor is the saw heavy enough to warrant pivoting to take the weight of the saw. small saws dont need dogs, let alone, big or dual dogs. they are purely to look 'cool'... but thats subjective, i would look at a small saw with dual dogs and think [expletive deleted]
  13. basically anything 90+cc and 20+yrs old sounds awesome. I'm very partial to the sound of a husky 2100 barking to life on a frosty morning. but most old muscle saws will do, big old mcculloch's are a bit special, 125sp would be nice to have just to listen to every once in a while
  14. no, i think we are all getting a bit confused as to what gauge is.... The chain 'gauge' is the thickness of the lower part of the drive link, the part that runs between the bar rails and contacts the sprocket, not the entire drive link.
  15. i dont really see a correlation between chain gauge and strength of chain... the gauge is only the thickness of the drive link between the bar rails, the actual chain link part of the drive link is the same thickness across the board. all drive links are born equal and the lower half is ground down to the three different gauges. you may experience more tooth wear on a smaller gauge chain, due to thinner metal contacting the sprocket. but the chain shouldnt be any more prone to snapping. my 2p...
  16. to be fair tho, they are not meant to be waterproof, and 99% of trousers out there will melt if you press a hot exhaust on them. expecting a bit much from them perhaps?
  17. cornered the SW husky rep a couple of days ago.... t540xp expected in october, there is reportedly a few bugs in the autotune, and they know they cant afford to get it wrong. They will be releasing a new climbing helmet and a couple of other accessories with the saw. 560/562xp ready to go, should be any day now, but we (the uk) will only be getting the 560xp (small bar mount).
  18. in my experience, you retain alot more of your personal space on the underground if you are carrying an 088... even bar-less, people respect dual felling dogs.
  19. few gallons of red and a blower, a nice still evening and were away, it burns so hot youll have a nice column of smoke going straight up.... get on it jon, i'll bring the marshmallows
  20. currently sporting about 6 bites... they particularly like the back of my hands and knuckles, or just bite my shoulders straight through my shirt. catch them, hawthorn spike through the abdomen and send them on their way (usually straight up or down)

  23. i dont get it... a competition to win 7grands worth of shiny arb gear, free entry, you dont need to enter anything (pic or name of a new product etc, like previous comps)... what gives? who's organising it and why exactly? dont get me wrong, i like free stuff and the sponsors have obviously been very generous, but whats the angle?
  24. used to be able to get loops of it on fleabay, havent seen any for a while tho... chain manufacturers dont seem to offer it to the european market
  25. got a 100' of oregon skip chisel a few years ago from the u.s. exchange rates were very kind at the time
