  1. The guy called me back twice after his price (to be honest I wasn't sure who I was talking to) so I gave it him verbally, he is currently thinking about it. However, I doubt he will be using us on this occasion:001_cool:. If anyone in the Birmingham area wants some very nice Oak firewood (approx 10 tonne) let me know, they have a very large and dead tree to fell, you may need to do a Bat survey first though.
  2. Quite true but is it a risk worth taking, the lad did seem quite genuine but I have had dealings like this before so it makes you a little cautious. I would suspect they will want more done than quoted for so I will give them a price and it will be in writing and very specific.
  3. After nearly 30 years in the business I thought I had been there and done it but today I went to Birmingham to price a job and when I got to site I could not believe what I saw in front of me. The address was a bit vauge so I called the guy 5 mins before the sat nav said I would be there and met him on a nearby car park, he was smartly dressed, mid twenties and in a nice and clean smallish car (didn't take any notice what it was). I followed him a short distance to a gypsy/traveller site. I was gob smacked to say the least, they want some big old trees felled and a few others trimmed, the spec was a bit hit and miss and seemed to be made up as we went along with some of it backed up by phones calls to the different owners of various vans on the site. There was various piles of logs and branches throughout the site and even some wood chip piles.
  4. They want the butts ASAP. Are you asking because you have some? if you have a price in mind PM me and I will pass it on. Think of a figure and they will either say yes or no.
  5. Thanks for your comments but you are telling me what I already know, after 30 years in the business I know a little bit about what timber does what and I have already expressed my concerns in a slightly more diplomatic way rather than insisiting they alter the spec. I seriously believe if I go back to my client who is a major landscape contractor whom I have worked for over a 15 year period and insist they go back to their client who is a local authority and insist they alter their spec because I am not happy with it I will not be working for them for much longer. In this instance I am just carrying out the work previously specified by an architect and approved by the LPA. It is not up to me at this stage to check what their liabilities are. I appreciate your comments but it is above and beyond my involvement in this particular project.
  6. I agree but its not my shout.
  7. In Wolverhampton you would pay around £200/£230 a day + a delivery and collection charge.
  8. My lads have been to todays session, I believe tomorrow has been cancelled due to the weather but I would certainly make your own enquiries
  9. Its for a kids play frame/ground/park, it has nets on the top of the trunks with ladders and slides all made from rustic timber..............if we manage to find any trunks to hold it all up that is.
  10. A couple of diagrams of what we need, measurement of the trunk is plus one metre which is to be concreted into the ground T1.jpg T2 T3.jpg
  11. James, are you doing your RFS on line or at college.
  12. I have a client who needs three trunks/butts min 600mm dia and between 6/9mtrs long, they need to have branches at the top which would form the spring of the crown. So a clear stem of approx 3/4 mtrs then some branches at the top making up the remaining 3/4 mtrs. Branches will need to be min 250mm dia. They must be either Oak, Beech or Sweet Chestnut and might consider another hardwood but not Ash, he has been told Ash is not durable?. If you have anything now or in the near future please let me know, I can collect anywhere within 150 miles Wolverhampton. I should mention he is of course willing to pay.
  13. One small tiny little piece of info, you do not need to use their forms, they will tell you that you should, which is simply for their convenience. Tree Preservation Orders, A guide to the Law and Good Practice, 9.4 Isn't that right Paul.
  14. I know how you feel Johnny, sounds like you know the score but the one thing I would say is never believe what planners say, they twist things to suit the situation.
  15. I spotted this, looks like a good idea but seems the iron work is a bit to close to the chainsam for my liking, check out the video. Joce Metal t/a The Irony O'it - Buckingham Woodstation
  16. Drum brake axle £100, nothing to do with me I just noticed it. IIRC he is based Abingdon. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=73939
  17. The concrete spurs are called godfathers. Some people attached them with coach screws instead of bolts which is not the best method, providing you use bolts with washers under the nuts they will be fine. If you dont use washers the nut binds into the concrete as you tighten it and will eventually work loose.
  18. A white transit van WV51 XH (didn't get the last digit), side door with broken handle, pulled in our place this week with two lads mid thirties, one tubby wearing hi viz, one asked if the gaffer was about, the mrs said no why, he said he bought some batteries off me before Xmas and wondered if I had anymore, I would never sell anything to them and the mrs knows this, she told them to go. Fortunately we have two German Shepards and one Mastiff and they told them to go as well.
  19. I think the problem is the timber you buy in, I very much doubt they can stop you selling timber grown and processed on your own land assuming that is what you do. If the timber you convert to firewood is 'bought in' then you are a retailer and of course this is not agricultural. I believe the best piece of advice you have had so far is do not reply until you have spoken to some one who knows the facts about these situations rather than guess.
  20. If you farm , rent or own at least 12.5 acres you do not need planning permission to erect a barn providing it is less than 465 sq mts and is not within 90 mts of another building which has been erected within the last two years and it is for agricultural purpose, eg storage of machinery and foodstuff. There is other criteria but the above are the starting block. The relevant form is 'Application of prior notification of agricultural or forestry development - proposed building. Town and Country Planning General Permitted Development Order 1995, schedule 2 parts 6 & 7'. It normally costs £70 but this varies between LPA's. I have been there done it got the barn (when I finish building it).
  21. I think you are wrong there, if the poles are dug into the ground then it is not temporary and needs PP. Temporary is some thing like a shipping container, shed, caravan or mobile field shelter.
  22. If you are going to work the wood you will more than likely need a felling license. Has it ever been thinned, is there decent haul roads or tracks through the wood. 50 year old Larch would be some decent timber, fell the Larch, sell the timber then sell the wood.
  23. If I am doing work to the axle or brakes I take mine off and leave them off.
  24. They are very similar but no, not the same. Why do you ask
