  4. hey garth you mog is a one armed bandit!!!! what a difference a coat of paint makes, remember the pictures when you got that more. Propper job mate
  5. but the cambium low down is what you would expect from a taller tree of the same age, why don`t the little peskis get in there. also the weekend we saw a quiet large elm covered in ivy and looking quiet healty, is the ivy helping? i dunno
  6. why do hedge row elms or pollarded elms not get DED? I was told the beetle that attacks them flies at a certain hight? i thought this was a fairy tale but it may have some truth.
  7. might be to do with ticking over alot sat on the ground waiting to trim up a stuck branch. Not sure if Dean leaves it running on the floor between cuts. always better to have a little more oil than not enough, easy to clean soot off than metal chards.
  8. we are using veg chain oil and we find the stihl saws struggle to get the oil to the tip of the bar, this oil is much thinner and less stickiy than normal chail oil. If it wasn`t oiling at all you will soon know, usually the chain goes slack very slack or it will sieze solid.
  9. many happy returns Short Wheel Base hope there is many more years in the old dog ehh
  10. skylotec is the dogs rear swingers in my eyes.
  11. Had a wellingtonia around 200ft hit by lightning in the late 80`s Turned it to a chard split stump of about 30ft, the debris was spread over a 200ft area. Thankfully no people or houses near by. Got some pictures somewhere if i find then i will scan them in.
  12. £250 per month!! for a chipper like that why does anyone buy them?
  13. Why in all the NPTC courses i have been on you should never have a gob over 20% of the tree then? So you are saying a 50% gob is better than a 20% I would like to hear from an NPTC instructor on this cause you got me thinking
  14. Hows it going? Have you started yet?
  15. the only reason you cut a gob is to create the direction of fell, I.E the front edge of the hinge. a 20% gob will fell a tree just as good as a 50%, straight , leaning or what ever. With assisted felling you only want the direction with the gob your rope will do the pulling. Far more important with assisted felling is a strong hinge and accurate felling cut. Sounds like some need to go on a refresher course in felling:001_tt2:
  16. Basic assisted felling mistakes what i can see 1) Gob is to deep nearly 50%(gob cuts don`t help the tree to fall!!!) 2) Felling cut is to high as said this can act as a step cut. 3) Hinge is not big enough or in line. Assisted felling is all down to accurate cuts and the right tension on the pulling rope. You don`t need shed loads of tension on the pulling rope to make the tree bend like a bow, Only enough so the saw dosn`t trap. 2 pulleys would be enough for that size tree. glad no one was injured.
  17. It`s not that bad lineclearance!! 18 months under my belt and most of the time enjoy it. understand your concerns for poor quality tree work but that is in your hands, understand siding up trees ain`t the best thing for trees but they do ok what i have seen. You will find most of the time it will be easyer than commercial work and i still find time to do private work at weekends. look forward to meeting you one day {i see your name on the team sheet) cheers stoxs
  18. 33333 can the T-shirt be streatched a bit? otherwise there may be a T-shirt for sale or swap for a fat boys!!
  19. Got any free tickets for this one Justin? might make a trip down for this, is there room for a caravan?
  20. from my experiance which is quiet limited i have used a Easylift 150 and i was impressed with the stabbility and easy of controls. Setting the machine up is easy and the controls work well, 200kgs in the basket or 2 men is well handy. I did have a go in an Oil and Steel and was not impressed bit like climbing an ash sapling! If i was in the market for a lift i would buy a Easylift. good luck
