  1. Work season starts 2 Feb here!
  2. Last week of the shooting season. Get your gun out.
  3. Thought you'd gone?
  4. I believe they used to use that timber for livestock lorry floors, back in the day.
  5. Brilliant! You'd get the other two in one of his tops!
  6. Good sized top.
  7. Green waste disposal.
  8. No matter what logs you start with, they will all end up as ash ....
  9. about an inch plywood.
  10. We use 2 foot square boards. If its really soft, we use trailer ramps upside down to give a really big footprint and low ground pressure. Handy for graveyards and over drains.
  11. Looked a fun job!
  12. I like the idea of monoliths , but I havn't had a go at coronets or rips or anything yet. I usually recommend a monolith when its full of concrete and wire.....
  13. At least your client wanted a monolith. Unlike one of my recent clients, who asked when we were coming back to fell the trunks? I pointed out that we had finished, and that was the spec.....
  14. Is that the only bit that wouldn't go through the new big chipper?
  15. Not used one Pete, but they keep on making them due to their popularity. Husky brought out the 575, and that's been replaced with the 576, and they still keep selling the 372. That's got to count for a lot. Simon Bowes reviewed the 576 in octobers Forestry Journal, and the article ended talking about what a good tried and trusted saw the 372 was. You like to tweak your saws too and as I understand it, the new style low emmission engines with fancy carbs can't be fiddled about and modded to the same extent.
  16. My 660 had the same issues with chain adjustment and low oil delivery. I changed the parts in the oil pump which cured it, but probably easier just to swap the whole pump. The guy from Stihl sent me the bits foc after I broached the subject with him on their technical help stand at the AA trade fair. Good service backup, but it sounds as though a few people have had the same problem.
  17. If we have any amount of braces to fit, we use two climbers, one to fit each end of the system. That can save a lot of wriggling about between the braces when you have got the last one or two to do. We put the small stuff in a bag and find that its best to leave the loose end of the cable hanging down, then pull up and cut what you need as you go. A very sharp knife too. I put mine on a 2 foot length of string so it doesn't get dropped. We also use one of those little chefs blow lamps with a spark built in, much better than faffinf about with a lighter in the wind.
  18. Old skool rules here! Check shirt and a Willans harness!
  19. The lads servicing the chipper today instead. The radio said at 8.45 that a car had broken down ON Stamford Bridge! That will cause a bit of upset! (For non-Northern types, Stamford Bridge is a single lane bridge on the main road from the coast to York and Leeds, not the footy ground!)
  20. Where I used to work, we used to have a crew cab Bedford road sweepers truck as a chip truck. The container had aluminium roller shutter sides and the frame was made from 2" box section, steel floor and steel roof! It was very heavy and grossly overloaded all the time. However it was quite a useful vehicle. That LDV will be too heavy to start with, better to start afresh with a chassis and build your chip body from scratch. When the old van eventualy died, we took off the container off and stuck it on a new 3.5 ton Edwards trailer chassis, on which it was far better. I eventually bought it and cut off the roof, which was a further improvement. Sold it a couple of years back, and the place I traded it in to cut all the high sides off and have it on their hire fleet as a builders tipper trailer.
  21. To test a thermostat take it out of its housing and put it in a bowl of hot water. It should open up, if it doesn't its had it.
  22. Thermostat stuck shut?
  23. I was told it was cos the women couldn't lift up the bonnet as it was too heavy? Did you know the reason military 110's are called 'Wolf', is that it stands for Wheel On Left Flank.
  24. Congrats to you and your mrs!
