ill only be puttin on an 18" when i need it, other wise a 15" for most stuff. only saw i have so has to do for all( small private jobs etc!) carl.

as title really ive an old 254 that needs attention, might try n get it fixed, just wondering if it would handle a 20" bar so i could use it as a ringing up saw on bigger wood and preserve the new 346xp. thanks carl.

i like the sound of the narrower kerf bar makes sense as i feel that with an 18" bar its a little saw revin its way through a big piece of wood! would i need a different sprocket for a narrower kerf bar?? as i plan to use both the narrow 18" and stock 15" through out the day and could be a pain to change the sprocket too cheers carl

cheers for explaining that( embarrsingly simple really!) prob stick to the normal one as i somtimes use an 18" bar. can any one recomend a good 18 bar for this saw as mines knackered???

whats the advantage?? iam a bit ignorent when it comes to different chain ,bar ,sprockets etc is the any books on this subjects?? cheers carl

the other option on jobs like that is to work on an hourly rate with a rough estimate if they ask, then when you get asked to split carry allover the garden into the garage, cook dinner wash up etc! your still getting your money and probably wont get asked to either on hourly. carl.

hi ty glad your gettin on ok in france my family are there a while now i always enjoy a visit. could,nt help notice you say you get 200 euro a day for grass cuttin! and you pay your groundie 200 a day also! is that normal pay for over there ?? cheers carl

hi tom dont envy you with those injuries they sound bad. i have had a dodgey shoulder for somtime and also have tried a good few different things for it and to be honest the main thing which has helped the most was time off( due to lack of work) but also whist climbing i have started using a lockjack and a foot assender even on small trees slows me up a bit but i always found that pulling myself up and holding whilst taking in slack on the vt system really hurt. people i know also seem to rate doing wheight training to help biuld up the muscles. not sure if thats any help but hope you get it sorted anyhow carl

great thread thanks, i was aware of it but have signed up now thanks. on a bit of a side track here but i do a fair bit of sea fishing and we eat about 95% of what i catch but on a lot of fishing sites n forums it seems to be all catch and release and that your a barbarian if you keep your catch?? this has been on my chest for a while now and i think that by keeping your catch and sharing with friends in a funny way your helping the fish stocks by lowering the demand for these crap commercial techniques?? any thoughts should post this on the kayak fishin forum really but only just joined and leapin on your soap box as a new member usally doesnt go down well. cheers carl

would echo the comment about a dehumidifer there great for drying out wet/ damp old vehicles, actually just had my bulkhead drain block up and kindly fill the van with water luckly it has factory fitted rubber allover so not a PROB.

i have a pair of the orange strech airs and there dead comfy but the reflective strips on the bottom of the legs fell off pretty much straight away, not sure wether that would be a prob for you.

that price does seem high, i think my main deaLer charges 45 euro which i thought was high compared to car garages anyway i think the main point is how good the service is i have a cheap little place near mine and my saw has been in twice and still has the same prob so maybe i should of paid more?? good luck getting it going as a dodgy saw drives you mad!!

good luck with your assesment. as others have said just take your time and make sure the assesor relises you are being carfull, methodical etc. i think having little or no experience can help as in you dont have bad habbits and you do what the instructor say as you know no different. somtimes even if you cock it up a bit you can explain you way to a pass. one last thing dont get the hung up tree too hung up so when you do the rolling out with the bar it comes out easy rather than 10min wrestlin match. gd luck, carl -

hi matt i think if you could do your ground certs ( cs 30/31) off your own back you would be in a much better position to get some work as a groundie. it does sound as though work is thin over in uk so as a beginer could be tough to start, i guess if you can the work a lot for a little always seems to impress bosses! on the climbing side you could see if anyone does any recreational tree climbing in your area to get a go at it. companys may well train you up to climb if your keen too. gd luck caRL

great and intresting thread. much better to read a thread where a skilled and experienced climber used his knowledge and intuition than one where he pushed too far and hit the deck. ive very much still got the L plates on with climbing, mainly due to just not getting to do many large trees, so enjoy watching vids photos of people like gibbon, reg etc working ..inspiring. carl. p.s i think the comment about s blairs posts mainly being stupid is far from the truth!!! each to their own opinnion tho.

yep iam a pull line fan as once in place can use a variety of force from one man , 2;1 pulleys or vehicle , also can be quick to put in i tend to throw line it over limb and let the tail down the back of the trunk and choker off with big shackle find this is good on messy sitkas etc also easy to untie and saves crawling around in the crown to remove the knot. carl.

seem a hell of a lot for a used and old saw, as a matter of intrest how would one compare to a new 346xp??? as thats what iam thinking of getting to replace my 254( maybe il polish it up stick it on ebay and retire!!)

we did a long survey a while back and ended up using a heavey duty staple gun with long staples, was a way easier and quick than nails.... not sure if the tags are still on tho!!!! ha ha could be worth a try tho. carl.
