  1. hi ben. we have a couple of mogs at work. heres a few points , what sort of distances are between your jobs? as semms they only go about 40mph. the maintence does semm very high on them. because of the price second hand you sometimes end up with a 20yr old vehicle great as they are at that age bits will start to fail. also are you mechanicly minded or do you have accses to cheap reliable mechanics. also i think to utalise the massive engine fully one may need to tow a trailer. they seem to drink fuel to( ours in ireland is on red diesel so not to bad) but can seem bit daft doing 40 miles in it to prune apple trees cos you need the chipper for two minutes. make sure you get agri tyres for off road stuff( there not cheap tho!) just a few thoughts which may help p.s they are great fun to drive! carlos
  2. hi peter. dont worry iam not about to drop 1/4 ton bit of wood onto a piece of gear with out checking wether the rating is breaking or working limit, i usally only use them for load tying applications.will check and post a definate " working load" to clarfiy my assumption. carl
  3. hi glad you are ok sam. would be interesting to get bit more info, floatin capstan or bollard?. most ratchets i have had were rated at 5ton( think thats safe working). but when holding down a load they would have little or no shock loading (iam asuming its not an intergral one on a hobbs or similar) also if they had been used to secure logs on a truck for a year or two the rating would have gone out the window( not impliying that was the case with you )but would be worth having seperate ones for each task. i know our one get used for allsorts ( not rigging after this thread) carl
  4. hi darren cant think of much particular advice as just started really.sent off one lesson already semmed to take more of my time than i had banked on( 3to 4 hours wk) but i guess this would vary for each individual. the net seems good for study(till you get side track onto here for hours!!) good luck with it and hope you can pick up some work in the industry soon, i was very lucky and landed a job were the boss paid for all my training and trained me too. carl
  5. hi darran i have just started the hcc distance course for the rfs course and it seems to be very interesting, bit daunting at first just getting a load of workbooks but soon got into it. seems to be well thought of judging by past posts on here. i think its a good idea to learn the thoery and the practicle side by side as on the job it can be just a case of ye just cut it down and go home.. good luck with it which ever option you choose. carl

  7. thoughts are with his friends, family and work mates. very sobering and makes one realise how potentialy dangerous our job can be. hope he recovers soon and fully carl. ( pay pal is very easy n quick to set up)
  8. hi we are thinking of buying a log splitter for the back of a mog. any advice on which to go for ie pto or striaght hydrulic, makes models etc. thanks carl.

  10. hi iam doing the rfs course through distance learning (hcc) and am about to start the woodland managment section and was wondering if there was a comprehensive book on the subject. obiously theres probably loads i just wondered if one shone out. thanks carl.
  11. bad idea to ask for feed back after youve already bought somthin!! i found them ok ish nice n light good for prunning but bit gutless and slow chain speed, cheap tho.

  13. yes its very wet here (not just in winter) not too cold though! work wise it seems to all be slowing up here so check it out first before banking on any work. the nicest place when the sun does come out good luck. carl
  14. thanks for the discription of how to fit the load damper, sounds like not too big a job.i fitted the new ram today, i noticed the attachment end was pinched slightly so was a very tight fit so got that opened a bit so bit more side ways play.also noticed that the link arms wernt dead level so hopefully with those things adjusted it might not break again.thanks for the help carl
  15. hi andy thanks for the explination on the dampener and the offer of one thanks although we are in ireland so might be tricky. how do you stop the ram from taking the full shock? as we switch the hydrulics over to the tipper ram when we drive ( so chipper dosent drop down in transit)thanks again carl.p.s took ram off and its in repair shop so should be back in action soon !

  17. dont think it has an acummalater tank or switch on it.we are in ireland were the roads are very bad.also its gone on the same side on all ocasions. thanks for help carl.
  18. hi our three point linkage on a unimog u1500 has broke. its one of the hydrulic rams the actual ram shaft has cracked of where its attached to lift mechanism,this has happend three times over the space of a few years. we have just had a new shaft fitted each time.has any one else had this problem or could suggest any thing..oh we have a green mech pto chipper on the back all of the time thanks carl.
  19. definatly seems to be a gap in the training/testing market. hope it changes,in the mean time ill continue trying to make expensive dog leashes out of arb rope!!!! thanks for the splice help jamie. thanks carlos
  20. thanks for the feed back. the loler man is familiar with all the splicing techniques, he didnit fail them just said he could only loler the rope not the splice. it was interesting to here about the fact that nod would not issue a splice cert cos we have a lanyard that was spliced one end by treeworker and the other by us, they look the same and yet one cant be lolered!i have emailed a few rope manufactures awaiting a reply.would like to do a course in splicing seems strange that theres not more demand for this. thanks carl
  21. hi we had the loler man in the other day and he wouldnt inspect any splices that wernt done by a certified splicer( ie ones we had done). i am looking to do our own splices for the comp. handy for lanyards etc(and when you cut ropes in half!).the guy said that to become certified one has to send off samples of your splices to the rope manufactures. i was wondering if any body has done this or got any info on the best way to do it . thanks for your help carlos.
  22. ive used tenex now for a couple of years and never had any probs with it its very easy to splice your own eye to eye and cheap at 2 qiud A meter. does seem to bind when covered in pine sap though! i think that imo if you start a days climb with a sound prussic and come out at the end with a dangerous one then this may be due to your technique rather than the cord you use. i am queit new to climbing(2 half yrs) so this may not be right just my thougths. carlos
  23. looks cool has anyone driven one of these new mogs?? would be great to have all the power and capability of the old ones but with loads of electric gadgets to make driving smoother.64k you would want somthing!!!!

    shouldnt really laugh as we all make mistakes but i laughed my head off with that one, maybe a bit more slack in the rigging line would of helped!!!!!!!!!
