  1. If you go back to the dealer that you got the chipper from they may do you a deal if you explain the situation and haggle hard, you will loose a little but thats to be expected. You should be allowing for depreciation as one of your overheads anyway. Far too many outfits forget this and end up working too cheap, you should be writing your kit down at 25%-40% per year or so. That way you will be making the profit to replace things as required. So if you have £40k worth of kit, which isn't much for an arb crew when you consider saws and climbing kit too, you need to allow £10k a year minimum for depreciation, that way you'll be able to afford to replace stuff as required. Its all tax deductible anyway.
  2. Does anyone have a definitive answer as to wether it is necessary to tag and survey every tree in a woodland area for a 5837 survey? We have been asked to survey a large is area of mostly sycamore re-gen, many trees all of maybe 200-300mm. It would seem pointless to survey every one and make more sense to survey all those requiring work and then make general recommendations regarding the rest. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
  3. No I just have a regular screen... How do you find that one?
  4. Now that I have had the heizo for a while, I think the chip quality is very good, I had some samples tested and they made the g30 spec no problem. It is a nice robust machine and has made its money on a lot of site clearance jobs. My regular biomass clients have had no complaints. The other good thing about Heizohack is the blade system, on site clearance stones and metal inevitably end up going through. We recently chipped a big piece of steel..... The cost?...............£7

    Fisa

So how do I know if my or my staff's NPTC's are recognised by FISA?

    Fisa

Hi Paul, this is a sorry state of affairs, refresher training may be a good thing for occasional users, but for professionals like Matty it is pretty pointless. That said we all have to go along with it. If however it transpires that some NPTC assessors are more 'equal' than others this really is a disgrace. What is the AA doing about this? Cheers Tom
  7. The bandit 90 is a massive machine and not really in the same league as the others, it is more than twice the weight of the quad chip and twice the weight of the others. It will be twice the length of the quad chip too. Good chipper but built for the back of a big truck, you'll be pushing 7 ton with a full transit. I'd have the TP, good basic machines.
  8. I think its to do with pedestrian safety, and not the strength of the bonnet. It would probably fail an MOT with it on, if the examiner knew his stuff.
  9. With all chippers you get ballistic separation, the heavier chips fly the furthest and the light stuff drops first, you will notice this when chipping onto the ground with the deflector set high. Greenmechs tend to make a fairly fine chip. You could try and turn up the speed of the rollers to the maximum to get the chip size as big as possible. it might help... you could check the engine is making the revs it should as flywheel speed plays a big part.
  10. Big tree Dave! I have seen that before but never with anything that big.
  11. One framework that we are on has 4 companies on it, the other 3 are all bigger than us, one was kicked off the framework after they sent 2 guys to a storm damage job with a pole saw and no ppe! The other two have no cutters and just subby guys in. We are the only proper tree firm on the framework. Its down to down you fill out the forms, these big firms just tick yes on the PQQ in the knowledge that they can subby anything that they need in.. IME the small to medium firms do the best tree work and are the most efficient, the large ones usually have underpaid under qualified staff if they have any staff at all. Their tenders look great though as they have professional staff to complete them.
  12. Great idea, it will free up a lot of Mick's time, i always ask for him if I need bits for a saw...
  13. Vortex are great. But the Talons that I have were £400. They do some decent ones for less though
  14. BCS ferrari and pasquali are all the same machine from the same factory in different colours. I have a BCS and had one before that too, they are good machines.
  15. Don't forget I'll stick in a £50 on my account at Jonsies....
  16. Buy a second hand 346,350,357 and send it to Spud....
  17. I have found that NFU insurance is more expensive but they do pay out without fuss, plus you have a local office where you can go and speak to someone face to face...
  18. Just wanted to thank Spud for the latest two saws he has done for me. A 357 and a 362, both are much improved, especially the 357 which I finally managed to get running on 3/8th chain. The 362 is a nice saw too, better than it ever was but not as mental as the 357. Plus he even chucked in a few freebies; a husky hat and some pens and sweets! Top man. Cheers Steve!
  19. I wonder how many sad ***** write in.......
  20. Its stringy oversize pieces that cause the biggest problems, they can block the augers. If he hasn't got a drying floor to dry the chip forget it it will be way too wet, otherwise it should be fine... I have a TR6 and a Heizohack with a g30 screen, there isn't that much difference in the chip sizes. You can send your chip off and have it graded if you like......
  21. Don't do it. I had a refurbished Jensen, It looked great but was a bag of nails.. better buy an honest second hand machine, with a few hours on it...
  22. They are like hens teeth second hand...
