  1. Their product prices may rise but I bet the quality of their products will also rise. That interview with Sir James Goldsmith is very interesting - nice to see someone take it back to basics and talk straight.

  3. Ok am sending out the file test today.... Sorry about delay - it's been manic. There'll be a note in with them - please do not try and work out which file is from which manufacturer and do not post any results on this thread yet (as it could influence others). Anyone else care to take part? Let me know before 1pm today. Instructions are at the beginning of this thread. Thanks, Rob
  4. Sorry to hear that - RIP
  5. When a tooth is ground so it gets very hot it does seem to get very hard indeed to the point it can strip a round file. Grinders are fast but you usually have to take the chain off to grind the chain - by the time you have it off the bar and back on again you can usually have touched up the chain by then anyway.... But they work well if the chain is damaged.
  6. It's a pretty good thread but the above is a pretty poor post
  7. I agree with you on most of your comments regarding this thread Andy - but I could not disagree more with the above. When done properly tree surgery is a highly skilled profession - and certainly in the same league as plumbers, electricians and gas fitters.... absolutely no question IMO.
  8. IMO it comes down to there's no industry standard that the public are aware of.... If there were and the public were informed they'd be a bigger lean towards using qualified people.... as it is there are too many unqualified uninsured people doing the work and this keeps prices low. When this industry can pull together under one unified clear standard that the man on the street has heard of then prices would be higher.
  9. Good update Jon. I had a load of your elm out of the kiln a few of months ago and it seemed to come out well or at least good enough for the projects I needed it for.
  10. Started a steady deliveries of 8 cube a week which is great in this weather! Lovely to get it all shifted early this year.
  11. Thanks Clive - I can't keep everyone happy all the time and it would be unrealistic to try but comments like this are much appreciated. Rob D
  12. If it was within 20 miles I'd be straight in there! Cedar is good for indoors and outdoors, easy to dry and these butts have no shake or weakness. I'll send out a newsletter with a link to this thread if you've had no joy after a few days Jon.
  13. Pretty freaky - but will she not just do something nasty to it?

    What the ????

There's a vid here [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKviz4VZH1c]DR Beaver Blade - YouTube[/ame] Not sure how useful this would be though...
  15. Chainsaw files are a little bit 'rule of thumb' - there are other size files and it depends on how you sharpen... I find you need a larger file if using it freehand without a guide or it tends to undercut the tooth... A 1/4" file can be good for damaged chain in both 3/8" and .404... Seems to be some nice 3.2mm files about now for 1/4" chain which can be tricky to get a nice shape on with a 5/32" file. What size file do I need for my chain? As a rule of thumb use the following: .404 chain use 5.5mm (7/32”) round file 3/8 chain use 5.5mm (7/32”) round file .325 chain use 4.8mm (3/16”) round file 3/8 lo pro chain use 4mm (5/32”) round file
  16. Thanks Mark 3/16" it is I'm away until Monday so all of the orders with the file test will be sent Tues unless you desperately need em in which case will send Mon. Usually there is someone who packs orders for me but he's just had a back op....

    Sugihara bars

Yep Justin has taken a good fistful of bars! The courier was sweating a bit by the time he got them all loaded Here is a breakdown of all the bar lengths in both Stihl and Husky mounts. Bear in mind the bars up to and inc 20" are laminated and 24"+ are solid with replaceable nose. I think Justin will be taking a full selection of Sugi bars to the apf (as well as Alaskan mills as I'm not there this year). 18. Good good - so we're up to 8 people... hopefully if we can get a few more. I'll look to send all the samples out on Tuesday so anyone up until then please feel free to join in.
  19. Cheers all.... Still need a few more people so if nothing else it's x4 files for £1-00 - it'll take you 3 minutes to sign up for it!
  20. Do you have an MS260? I bought this off M Large - it is belt driven and runs blades x2 on the outside x2 in the middle. It worked ok but needed 'tweaking' in order to go on general sale and I don't think is CE marked... I think I paid £120-00 for it but want to sell it on £60-00 (+vat)..... I don't have an MS260 any more. It will only work on this saw...
  21. Sign up as well if you like Steve... the more who do the more accurate the results should be.
  22. You can do this as well morten - I'll send them out to you if you wish to take part. But I was more thinking rated by: 1.Best 2.Pretty good 3.Not bad 4.Not as good as the others! And then a few reasons as to why!
  23. Well done Si.... If nothing else you'll have some cheap files!
  24. There's been a few threads on chainsaw files - which is the best which lasts longest etc so I'd like to do a blind chainsaw file test to see which one proves itself in the field. It would work like this: Got to Products for the category: Round files and buy a single file of a size that you use the most out of 5/32" (4mm), 3/16" (4.8mm) or 7/32" (5.5mm). Just a single file any brand. On checkout put in 'freepost' as the voucher code. Checkout and pay for this file. You will then receive x4 files each colour coded blue, red, yellow and green. Each will have the brand removed Vote in the poll I'll set up on another thread. If you're interested reply to this thread and follow the above instructions. It would be good if at least 20 people took part.
  25. Excellent - I've just got a bandsaw - max cut 20" - it's an old Lumbermate that needs some tlc but looking forward to getting here working!
