  1. think there was a wood cracker on a machine with a tilt rotator by dymax's stand too
  2. another thing to be conscious of is, dependant on the weight of the tree, the 'lowest rated' component may be the weight of the winch vehicle Id want the winch to stall before anything broke. at least then the load can be let off in a controlled manner. any other component failure could result in a totally out of control tree
  3. You need to keep a minimum number of wraps of cable/rope on the drum at all times when winching (usually somewhere around 8-10)!. all the clamp/crimp/whatever is for, is to start the rope on the drum NOT to be loaded! towing with a winch is also inadvisable. slow = controlled = safer
  4. no good for commercial work though IMO. far too fast
  5. i used to have a photo of a previous generation ranger supercab tipper too. cant find it at the moment though
  6. sounds like bloody good logic to me Chris... hmmmmmmmmm now where's that wallet
  7. Chris, was there any particular reason you went for the small log mill over a smaller normal alaskan?
  8. Im not sure about westfalia specifically, but i looked on the fiskars website and it shows their 'new generation' axes which look identical to the (current/previous) ones but with new model numbers, for example i gather the new super splitter may be called the X25. It was there, i saw the reference to available from Jan 2011
  9. im after the same thing mate. Been trying to get hold of one of the Fiskars/Wilkinson/Gerber ones that B&Q and westfalia used to stock but cant seem to find one for love nor money. Aparently being re-released in the new year with new model numbers so i might have to wait until then. Heard nothing but good about them
  10. fairly common conversion these days. old 404 portal axles under landrovers. Primary advantage being fitting big tyres without worrying about the landrover half shafts which as far as im aware are fashioned from a particularly soft type of cheese
  11. market rasen, darley dale, the list goes on
  12. Ive just noticed where Clarks actually are... Think ive just found a stop off on my twice annual pilgrimage to the highlands!
  13. 420 x whatever profile x 28 as seen on the front of gawd only knows how many tractors
  14. I used to run my saws on red now i run them on blue
  15. From memory one of the stands at the apf who were demoing speedlining commented that the winch need not be lowered to tension the speedline so long as it did not function as the actual anchor once material was suspended on the line. For this reason, once tensioned, two friction hitches fastened to the two bumper recovery eyes were slid up the line to hold the tension
  16. purging it with water is all ive ever done. the smell of the gas tends to linger in the casting of the bottle but ive never had a problem
  17. that Alveo Vent looks smart. if available may well be the replacement for my vertex vent
  18. As someone who was at university within the last 5 years, for many of us it isn't what many perceive it to be. The 'student loan' i got varied tremendously. one year I received the first term payment, and then they decided they didnt want to give me that much, and decided they would not make the second payment because of their re-assessment of my parents means testing. after a particularly poor harvest year I received the full amount but even that barely covered rent. I worked through University for a local tree firm, in bars and venues as a sound tech all to keep my head above water while I pressed on with a course in sound recording that I grew more and more dissilusioned with, yet completed achieving a 'desmond'. From the point I left uni and returned home, I worked with local tree firms, Worked in marine contracting, helped on the farm, all to make sure I had a bit of money to pay for all my NPTC tickets. Now ive been working in the public sector for 2 years, i dont take for granted any training Im given, and between myself and my wife-to-be, we've saved a really good house deposit and should be moving into our first place soon. Without the student loan, and on this new higher tuition fees setup I could not have gone to university and learnt as much about myself as the subject matter. without the help of my parents letting me stay here for cheap rent while i got my deposit sorted, id never have been in the position now to buy my own house. Im very much aware that many people do not have this luxury! Ever since I left uni and was in employment, I have been paying back my student loan, and shall continue to do so, and Have no doubt that it will be paid back in full. Ive never claimed the dole or any kind of benefits my parents got family allowance or whatever it was called and ive no doubt it contributed to the quality of my upbringing. Im very much aware that I have been afforded many opportunities in life. Im pleased that I can help afford others the same. The positive slant on tax is, the more you're paying, the more you're earning I guess.
  19. unfortunately from what ive read so far, the EA deems 'waste' to remain waste until the point at which it is fully utilised, and that waste can have a purpose and can be bought and sold, so we may be on a hiding to nothing! Im looking at it in the same way as demolition waste being pulverised into a saleable crushed aggregate, but im not sure that's going to get the answer we want either
  20. why should it be a one man band who drives down 'the value'? more often than not in business, it is the big fish that is in a position to be able to drive down said price
  21. if anyone wants to look at the guidance notes for exemption T6... http://environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Business/T6_exemption.pdf
  22. Perhaps it is worth registering for exemption T6 - treatment of waste wood and waste plant matter by chipping, shredding, cutting or pulverising. Conditions being no more than 500 tonnes a day and stored for no more than 3 months after treatment. This can be undertaken at any location so long as the conditions are met The question is, will this 'treated' waste then be not classified as the 'controlled' waste that the duty of care transfer notes relate to. Will endeavour to find out
  23. Rob, is it feasible to use the mini mill alone to make cants would you say? I can envisage easily how you would do it so long as you can keep your guide plank stabilised for the first cut, and supposing a perfect 90 degree angle between base and guide bar. I just wondered if it's something you've tried
  24. at a guess, one will be 'storage of waste not at the point of production' or something along those lines. theyve just changed all the waste exemption paragraph numbers else id be able to tell you off hand which one. We have to have them all internally too, for our own depots and sites
