  1. seems like it was me who was at crossed purposes there Matt, sorry mate, i very much agree, i would love an HGV ticket myself especially if someone else is paying, but again, like i said, dont shoot the messenger. I know you work for the agency and i only have what ive been told. i did get the impression these were older guys, but even so! but back onto topic, the more relevant bit of what i had to bring to the discussion was that tree surgeons cant claim forestry exemptions, because they just arent forestry.
  2. frans, if you require any real in depth technical knowledge about the 110s and how to fit almost any other type of engine into a land rover, sign up on http://www.lr4x4.com and there will be someone who knows anything you care to ask probably! jim
  3. think weve got wires crossed here. for the agency im not on about needing or not needing tachos. im just on about the mog drivers needing HGV tickets and a lot of them werent prepared to do that and left. again, only what ive been told. but it is true that a unimog for any function other than farm or forestry now needs white diesel on the road and an HGV ticket to drive it
  4. sorry quickthorn, only just saw your reply in the other topic the information i got about arborists not being able to class as forestry and thus needing tacho's and what not, was from my boss in leeds and from a guy i know well who works for the environment agency local to me when im home home. bearing in mind this is purely for gross train weight exceeing 3500kg the thing for arborists was that its not a genuine silvicultural or forest harvesting operation, but a commercial 'service' more akin to a landscape gardener. the friend in the EA confirmed this and commented that only true forestry and agricultural purpose were exempt, even they werent!! and went on to say that their best mog drivers were all leaving the agency because they had to do HGV1 tickets to drive the mogs any longer. dont shoot the messenger, just what ive been told. i dont know how much of it is concrete by any means QT, where abouts in lincs are you based?
  5. I wish i knew if it was at manufacturer's settings. for the L screw i seem to remember it's all the way in, then one and a quarter turns counter-clockwise or something
  6. hey guys anyone got a tacho either near leeds or somewhere in lincs who wouldnt mind setting up my 026 for me. think it's over fuelling quite a lot and would just like it set up properly. it doesnt run badly by any means, just gets through the go juice and i dont think its running fast enough. could lean it off myself but i dont wanna have it getting too toasty. any other suggestions... colourtune?? jim
  7. cheers steve, i reckon i might get on pretty well with 11, it's the same size as i use for non-tree climbing that way. means i can use a wider variety of little gadgets should i find them advantageous too
  8. this will prove interesting to me also as im looking to get my first new rope for tree climbing. only thing is ive been looking at the blaze which i think is an 11mm, why is 13mm so much more popular? it's only 2mm
  9. ah there we go then, my now sold 2.5td 90 had the lucas setup. i know why i had that in my head. cos i was agonising over the thought that the fuel pump had had it once id rebuilt the vehicle from the ground up engine AND bodywork and refurbed the chassis etc, when all it ended up being was i needed to double check a couple of valve clearances
  10. stuck up a pic of mine in show us your rides, and just realised... lightbar isnt on there (was on some home made mag mounts at the time) and you cant see my lights in the front grille or on the rear bumper either. doh!
  11. fair enough, coulda sworn mine was lucas CAV, but then ive done so much work on my 19J engined 90 recently, ive probably just got the two mixed up
  12. nope, 4 cylinder inline diesel turbocharged with lucas direct injection and on a P im gonna hazard on egr not edc like on the other landrovers!
  13. here's mine. it's nothing much, but at 20 im proud of it. got some bits for it at the moment but havent fitted them. some extra lights, roofrack, arch flares and bigger tyres (265/75R16). making a computer for it with a motherboard small enough to sit in the bottom of the cubby box so i can have gps on and off the road in it, and cost less than the average tomtom!! also designed a secure chainsaw carrying rack for the boot and got some grilles for the insides of the boot windows in case of flying equipment
  14. so we're all skinhead thug-a-likes who drink so much tea we practically piss the stuff and fill up the wedgwood cups of the higher class with it... HUH?
  15. veg oil in my experience is fine, as long as it's canola (rapeseed oil) it has a very high adherance to metallic surfaces, is incredibly well lubricating and it's kind to nature. i know guys who have been using it continuously for years. i have one saw thats had it in for about 6 months, and you're supposed to use it when cutting by a watercourse anyway. all biodegradable bar oil is is vegetable oil with a stabiliser or tacking agent in, which it just doesnt need anyway make sure you're oiler's turned up to full (mine are never anywhere but full anyway) and you should be just fine! only had experience of canola oil but a lot of the guys over on arboristsite have tried others. i do know people who have claimed to use gear oil and its made a right old mess of the job, dont know why, dont want to, its horrid stuff anyway just my 2 pence. no guarantees implied or given

    Gear

i currently only rec climb but will have to look at some gear when i do my cs38 which will be asap funds permitting. probably get a petzl navaho. i tried one before and liked it since i enjoy a lot of freedom of movement. currently, im just familiarising myself with the rope techniques. i use my wild country elite syncro ziplock harness climbing on 11mm traditional with a blakes and cambium saver set into the tree with a throwline. will move onto split tail soon. might try it next time out. since it doesnt have any side Ds, but has rated matched haul points built into the carcass of the harness i have a maillon secured in each of these points which allows me to snap my wirecore on and get some practice with that too. havent tried redirects yet, but will do soon for sport climbing, i find it the most comfortable harness available. i also use it for kiteboarding
  17. go to the nptc website, download the training schedules for each module you want to take. if you're confident enough that you can pass the assessment, you can opt to only do that bit without the course itself however, if you cant do risk assessments, identify tonnes of safety stuff, and if you step behind the tree once the backcut is in, you're history im afraid. it might not be the same for all nptc courses, but my training and assessment was rigorous, and i couldnt be more grateful for that! [/2p]
  18. i looked into this though. has to be genuine agricultural or forestry use and aparently, arb work does not qualifty as forestry use not to mention commercial use mog drivers need hgv tickets now too!!
  19. same here. and during my course had to do a split level on a 12" tree tbh im pleased i did; but it was a mare to lever over. went eventually though
  20. did one nptc with my old man's 290 and it just weighs far too much. did another with a mate's 026 and it was just about right (max 15inch bar length anyway). yeah it's a super ive been offered. should have a touch more power than the 026?? and im told theyre reliable as tough old boots. do they vibrate particularly badly then? i did wonder if they were on rubbers or springs
  21. oh i dno, their sheer presence winds me up enough. hate the damn things. dropped about 30 of them round the back of our garden the other day. that wasnt depressing, that was payback!! i think they depress chippers more. the jensens we had where i used to work, even the 150 pto one that would eat whole small trees would bog down when it was full of leylandii. it's not the smell, it's the sap i can do without!
  22. it isnt there but if it was my vote would go to childreach international. im participating in 'climb kili for kids' next summer if i raise £2000 by june, and after ive been up kilimanjaro I shall be doing a week or so volunteer maintenance working at a tanzanian school more info to be found at http://www.justgiving.com/jameslidgett but i shall of course give those above charities a look. im sure they all do very good work! jim
  23. anything in particular i should be wary of with the 028av in particular or the 034av. looking at possible 2nd hand truck saw for every day stuff and there dont seem to be many 026's about at the moment. cheers jim
  24. a guy from arboristsite called michael where i hang out (sawsong) contacted me via msn and pointed me this way. He was trying to get me to join a saw collector's forum but when i pointed out that i was more into the trees than the saws he suggested this place and the site i see there in your sig
  25. hey guys, Im Jim, 20, a trainee/groundie from Lincs but often to be found in Leeds
