now my brain's gonna explode. if i dont need 5m then i would just get a 3m steelcore, but i might need the extra length of the 5m for something so... any suggestions of the best rope to use?

you make a compelling argument! I assume double fisherman-ing a rope to a snap constitutes observing correct practice? I dont really want to pay out for another grillon in 5m but I dont want to get to the course and find out it's not acceptable. of course im worried about such things, I dont know any better

i personally thought half inch would be nicer to handle. my grillon is probably loaded with 11mm im guessing. hmm... £15-20 quid explains the price of a 5m NE split tail vs the cost of the rope alone, but a split tail such as that wouldnt be suitable anyway i take it due to its dynamic nature? should I be looking at something like a static kernmantle or something like that?

I had experience of a leo 15gt on one occasion and the tracks move down and outwards making the track width wider and increasing its ground clearance. However this is achieved by putting the legs down and pulling out pins on each side to let the tracks slide out. the unit was very stable and has a very low ground pressure. unfortunately that particular day we had a leaking hose which was fixed before we started work, but that happens to all machines. the 200kg 2 man basket was spacious and offered good maneuverability. only negative i can think of being that the controls are captive on the basket and nowhere else. our climber left the basket to do some work from within the canopy (only access to the tree with the lift was from next door's garden in the end, (wasnt planned like that)) and would have liked it if we could have lowered the basket back down and moved the machine away from the tree, but due to no extra or remote controls he had to climb back into the basket. I believe the higher spec leos have removable and remote control sets, perhaps it is available as an option on the 15 Im afraid much of my experience was 1st hand observation as I wasnt actually flying the thing, but I hope it's of some use the only drawback I

hmm just did some measuring. to put a spliced eye on the rope i lose 28 inches, to tie a double fisherman's on the end I lose 18 inches, but for a stitched eye i would only lose about 5inches anybody know of anywhere that does either a 5m length with a stitched eye, or where I can get a stitched eye done?

hmm, personally I think its a tough one. it's dangerous, but everyone in it KNOWS it's dangerous and so look at all the measures taken to control that danger. if i recall, farming is responsible for the most fatalities across europe or something. because it can be fairly dangerous at times, but nobody thinks it is, so lack of concentration and complacency, and that general farmer 'cocking about' demeaner leads to lots of accidents

right, want to sort myself out a 5m lanyard not seeing many of these ready done, so I thought id put one together myself. so 5m of half inch rope... can anyone suggest a fairly stiff one? (comparable to others) now, what to do about its termination? I would like to have an eye on the end whether spliced or stitched and have a snaphook on the end. Now i realise I could have the rope spliced around the eye of the snaphook, but if i were to buy a ready spliced length of rope, could I use a PPE certified maillon to connect the two? a 5m new england split tail that would be ideal for the job costs nearly 30 quid, making by my reckoning the splice about 20 of those. ive no problem with tying the rope onto the snaphook but I personally think it looks a bit untidy and cluttered. Id prefer to keep my climbing and positioning systems as 'clean' and simple as possible. whether I adjust with prusik or a grab is as yet undecided but not as important. all input greatfully received Jim

Quick off topic question, Is a wirecore lanyard mandatory for CS39 and for commercial arborists? just I know some people think they give a false sense of security

hmm. i thought id try and address both probability with a 5m wirecore, and then proceeded to fall off my seat when I saw the price of them. 3m reasonable, 5m ridiculous... unless someone can put me right?

I think probably because it's the most common issue. That seems to be the way the topic steered itself anyway. That's bad enough, but speed and coke is even more shocking

yeah I did my CS30 and 31 there last march. I was trained by Paul Peacock and Assessed by Andy Reynolds. Both top blokes and incredibly knowledgeable!

yeah all the stuff i have already will be only a month and a half old too, which puts it well under the 6 months stipulated. so yeah i knew i have some stuff im gonna need to get beforehand, i just wondered what they havent told me about. like i wont buy spikes yet if i dont have to.

50cm one, something like that? Ive emailed the centre to find out about the spikes thing and to enquire as to whether they think their requirement list is rather short. Given that they market their course as for people who havent climbed before, and yet are expected to perform rescue, the list is pretty short. I shall let you see what you all think Click Me!

according to justin's catalogue, helmet only is still vat free. Tony, we are talking about the same gloves yes? the thin 'extra grip' ones not the chainsaw ppe ones? I didnt find them that bad and reasonably priced but if anyone can suggest others id love to hear from them ok scratch the maillons, im only going on TCC illustrations there.

since spikes arent on the list of required equipment from the training provider and I cant find them on the assessment schedule, I hadnt given them a second thought. I was under the impression you had to make a rescue using the casualty's line, and then a second method, either a pole rescue OR using your climb line (casualty's line does not reach ground) or something like that. I can only see mention of explaining the use of spikes being only on trees set for removal or pole rescue, but no mention that a pole rescue is mandatory. Of course if im wrong, i want to know about it

probably should have listed that as well, Ive already got a throwbag, throwline and cambium saver, also two 1.5m split tails although im starting to think that on the course I wont use them and they'll angle it to wards the prusik loops?
