  1. think aire valley are from horsforth so i doubt it would be them. Acacia does ring a bell but i see a lot of different trucks about. I was tying my blakes wrong for a short while, as that suislide knot, but when i posted a picture to ask if id got it right, i was quickly picked up on it and encouraged not flamed which was nice. got it down to an art now lol. technically one of the values of the blakes is the tail should never shorten or migrate if tied properly and so does not NEED a stopper knot, but IMO why would you ever not tie one? reason i got mine wrong was i thought id got it right, and checked in the tree climbers companion. now the pictures of the blakes on page 53 and 83 i think it is, look different to one another, and where mine looked like one of them, it should have looked like the other. I can post pictures of how it was as suislide and correctly if anyone thinks it might be of value to either this conversation or to other new guys?
  2. had a jensen 530 where i used to work. was a solid hard working chipper and couldnt really fault it until going over a speedbump slowly in bradford one of the indespension units peeled away leaving us stranded. while we were waiting for the replacement unit we borrowed a similarly specced vermeer. not only was it considerably heavier, the grp engine cover was horrid, the controls were needless and overly complicated, the clutch sounded like something being eaten alive, and the stress sense system literally refused to chip anything near its capacity, oh and the multiple control bar switches were knackered. so ive used two chippers and didnt really like either, no thats not fair, the jensen was good, but i would like to demo a greenmech and see what theyre all about. reckon the 15-23 with the 34hp td engine would suit me down to the ground. sorry i cant be more help than that
  3. could one of you fine gentlemen do me a big favour and let me know the following, for a mk3 ideally (89-98) Kerb weight: somewhere near 1600kg i THINK Gross weight: about 2600ish i think Payload: somwhere upwards of 950 i reckon towing capacity: 2250 sound about right? the above should be in handbooks and/or vin plates i think. might list train weight thanks a lot Jim
  4. Tim, I THINK the availability of the two rings on the bridge could be to connect the two ends of your climbing line seperately to gain some seperation across your bridge and make handling your friction hitch easier, but i could be way way out on that. Im purely speculating Jim
  5. think my 30 and 31 combined cost something to the tune of 500 odd quid including assessments. the assessments cost 75 a piece and the other 350 was the tuition. was a monday to thursday course with assessment on the friday. got my 38 coming up when ive spent some more time in the trees. in hindsight i woudl have gone to college to do them, but im making up for it and paying myself through them. agreed, its an investment!
  6. Steve, got it from Justin all i know is 'Marlow 2mm throwline' "50m lightweight throw line for use with throw bags. Smooth hardwearing polyester cover for excellent handling and longevity." think it says you can tug 80kg worth on it or something.
  7. that's a sound piece of advice Marc. thankyou. I dont really want to open the whole footlocking can of worms but i would assume you set your rope over a branch that overhangs another so that you can 'land' on a limb? and i assume DRT footlocking is better if you are going to use the same rope for positioning once in the canopy rather than ending up with one end anchored to the base of the tree. 1:1 doubled rope being less wearing on the rope and quicker, 2:1 being less effort per movement i presume. been meaning to try footlocking out for a long while. no better time than the present. I shall consult the TCC once more thanks
  8. my throwline is this purple marlow braided stuff. i kept braking it when it was going the wrong way with my bare hand earlier, and then thinking whoops, thats gonna hurt, but it never once burnt me. good line methinks. plus its bloomin strong!

  10. apologies if this makes no sense. cross-posted from another forum hopefully you can help me with this. ive spent all morning practising with my throwbag and getting what i feel is quite pleasingly accurate with it. I can set my throwline over a nice highcrotch suitable for a TIP that will allow me to move about a large proportion of the tree using the odd redirect etc. however, try as i might, there's always stuff in between the two sides of my throwline (where it goes up and where it comes down. on a low limb its not such a problem, i can trim the small stuff away with my pole saw. but we're talking maybe 40 odd feet up for this TIP and when i try to deploy my cambium saver, i end up with a loop running between the desired TIP and whatever it is that's got in the way. I do apologise if this is difficult to follow. It strikes me that the methods in the TCC apply well to a tree without a single twig growing off the trunk, or perhaps a pole with a tbar at the top. if i had my throwline either side of a sizeable lower limb below the crotch i want, i throw it over that limb to get both the same side, but it's the smaller brashy stuff further up that's causing me problems. is there a method to this or am i resigned to the method of moving up one limb at a time and continually advancing my TIP? am I being daft here? am i trying to do something that just cant be done in these scenarios? is achieving a single TIP straight away, the ever-elusive holy grail? sorry for the super-rookie question, but that's what i am, a rookie Jim

  13. yeah cheers adam. i should really consult the manual. still keep finding more bits that adjust and wondering how or why. like the D rings and straps have velcro behind them. want to know why lol

  17. got my stuff today including the kolibri. love it! so comfortable for just hanging around in and for bodythrusting etc. been getting to grips with positioning with my grillon too. i tried an ascending technique i saw in a video where you put your lanyard around the trunk and walk up it until your climbing line is slack and then tend the slack. was quite tough on the legs, but moreover the tree i was climbing was narrower than my waist so the fixed d rings tendedto pull in a bit tight, i think thats more due to the size of tree than anything, and the sheer amount of force being exerted on the d rings from me essentially standing horizontally out from the tree with no support from above. i didnt favour that method anyway. I also set myself up with my micropulley automatically advancing my blakes, but i found it considerably tougher pulling on the running end of the line doing that than when i would do it all manually, so for now, the pulley is back on my hip tending slack. the experimentation continues!
  18. drove dailys at one of my past jobs, very comfy vans to drive to jobs in, but i did notice they never left the road. the yard was pretty muddy in parts but where the vans lived was tarmacced. the incredibly bad ground clearance did cause issues when tipping off on the mulch heap too come to think of it.

  20. it was GBT products. Greville, the head honcho seemed a genuinely nice bloke. He took the time to talk to a 21 year old lad (me) who isnt in business but one day would love to be. He's not far away so he said he'd demo me his single roller 7inch chipper that he designed with his brother. It does look a very nice machine, think its a bit on the heavy side though, anyway thats a whole other discussion. ah right, didnt know that. like i said, it felt nice to handle on the stand, in real life, not a clue says I. i think i read on the buzz that bandit released something identical in '91 and then went bust before it went into full production? i might have got my wires crossed
  21. used the danequip one with the kohler engine on it. liked it, but it can be a bit of a swine to swing side to side all the time. cue bandit HB20 'sidewinder' at lamma this year i got talking to the UK dealer, and had a play with one on their stand (engine off of course). basically you pull it up to the stump, pull a pin or move a lever, i forget, and the wheels stay still and the whole body swivels on top of the wheel carriage like a turn table affair. so smooth, so easy. not tried one on a stump, but i was certainly impressed. the hb20 has a 20hp kohler and driven wheels, the HB 19 has a 13hp engine and is manual jim

  23. at 35mpg with petrol, itd be a damn site cheaper to run one of those than my discovery!
  24. do you guys have the single sliding D or two?? trying to weigh up pros and cons of both ways
