  1. Mine twisted with 4 wraps and 3 braids. by adding a 4th braid it doesnt seem to twist at all and the wraps stay a lot neater. that's on 9mm
  2. doesnt the hitchclimber use the oval symetrical OK biners? in which case wouldnt you be best off with the DMM A327? http://www.dmmindustrial.com/productsDetails.asp?id=4&id2=45&id3=328 I could do with a couple of OKs or at least AM'D biners but finding them hard to find at a reasonable price. cant find anywhere stocking the DMM ones at all im afraid
  3. yeah ive found a klemheist and now a 4x4 VT both work really well. got the VT biting hard now. I found the problem was making sure the legs were as equal length as possible and mine were slightly out. adding the 4th braid and tugging on it a few times have made it really good to use. I like the VT but it sits a long way up the strop for my liking. A normal prussik was good and yeah bit hard, but also didnt seem to sit as well as the klemheist which IMO is every bit as simple a knot. for simplicity's sake, the klemheist has it. The VT is pretty to look at, and I do like the way it advances, but im afraid I dont know if I could call it better 'enough' on the whole just yet. Only time will tell I suppose. edit: oh yeah, I've got 6m of Marlow Gecko ordered so I shall be trying some things out soon
  4. Thanks again Justin! maybe my luck's on the up finally!
  5. I can reveal that I did infact go for white in the end Thanks guys

    yahoooooo

well done mate! looking forward to doin it myself this time next month
  7. different to mine, on mine, the 'top' tail crosses over the 'bottom' tail each time which I think is how it outlines in the TCC I did a 4 wrap 3 braid and the wraps seemed to splay a little, but a 4 braid which gave more friction, also kept the whole job tidier. I found a lot of keeping the knot even was down to keeping the legs as close to the same length as possible
  8. require a chinstrap helmet for climbing. Could technically do ground work in a climbing helmet if it is sufficiently high visibility, but I already have a nice shiny orange one for that, so Im just looking for a climbing one now. Still torn between white and orange tbh. This is getting annoying
  9. That is a worry, thanks Peter... So the orange... what kind of orange are we talking about? is it roughly the same colour as say a husky helmet, or more stihl orange? and yes, I am fully aware that im now just being a tart! lol
  10. this is annoying. I'm still torn between white and orange and now theyre level pegging in the poll anyone got a photo wearing a white one? or orange for that matter
  11. still havent heard from anyone at NPTC but i'm swinging toward white or orange I think. Will depend on what colours whoever has in stock to some extent
  12. good tip. I use a white paint marker or tipex. tends to stay on the chain well for the up to 4 revolutions to do the teeth and the rakers/depth guages
  13. Tried the VT again with shorter legs and the 4 wrap, 3 braid version works brilliantly. I certainly dont want to even try using it as a main climbing hitch for a long while, but I have to say, as a lanyard adjuster, it seems pretty easy to me! and seems to stay how it should be more than the normal prusik. Only advantage I've felt over the klemheist in this very limited testing is it is easier to advance (as if it's not there) and very soft to release.
  14. yeah I shall give it another go for sure. I should also add that I did the klemheist as above from the tree climbers companion and liked it, but I could get it to slip a little as I put weight onto it. I found that doing it with the extra wrap as per the animated knots site made it even better!
  15. thought I'd have a little experiment with some knots for my lanyard setup. tried, prusik, tried VT (all leant back roped to my bedroom doorhandle). prusik seemed to deform and lock up too much, also didnt allow me to run my pulley how i wanted it for single handed adjustment, VT wouldnt grab hard enough, though I suspect it could have been something I was doing wrong but either way, it was out of the running for now. Then moved onto a Klemheist. Hadnt tried this knot before but Im really happy with its performance. I tied it with a loose piece of rope in a bight rather than a loop, and then tied double fishermans' placed to set the legs the desired length. Doing it this way I was able to put the pulley between the legs and it advances, grips and lets out like a dream. I do feel it would be even further improved by using an eye to eye cord and an oval biner. I havent climbed on this yet so please give your opinions and suggestions. I'm here to learn! Jim
  16. yes and with good reason, but again, this is for a climbing helmet only
  17. Ive emailed NPTC to find out whether a higher visibility helmet is considered desirable or not.
  18. well i suppose that's a stigma i'll have to live with to satisfy the course stipulations
  19. I think it's so far gonna be looking like white or orange, dependant on what people have in stock. Will both go with the rest of the gear, both nice and high visibility, red is less so and im not particularly partial to if im honest... What you just mentioned about nptc not looking too kindly on it did also cross my mind actually Matty. Good point well made.
  20. so would I be right to take from this that most of you regard climbers as not requiring to be high vis?
  21. got my orange Husky helmet for groundie duties, this one is purely for climbing:icon14:
  22. just a bit of semi-pointlessness this guys, I cant even decide what colour helmet to get. Decided the Petzl vertex vent is the one I'll go for but as for what colour, I just cant decide. Yellow is a bit too builder and orange seems a bit too obvious so ive pretty much discounted these but i've included them in the poll to keep it fair. if you could give any reasons for whatever colour even if it;s just your favourite colour it might help me decide. White is tempting because it looks clean and it's quite visible and contrasts well with the black visor and ear defenders, black is just cool but perhaps a bit OTT and darth vaderish (not necessarily a bad thing), Red, everyone seems to be wearing and wont really go with the uniform... soooo black or white i suppose... Edit: I forgot to make it clear that this is for climbing, I have a perfectly good Orange Husky helmet for ground duties. I need a chinstrap helmet for my CS38 and onwards
  23. oh my word, Jamie's the extra from the red hot chili peppers videos!
  24. i might not be giving the right impression but i really am trying to keep it nice and simple. I like to climb on my split tail system with a blakes. I find it does what I need it do well. I have a pulley already that i would like to use in conjuction with a lanyard just to give me the one handed adjustment like i have with my grillon. I find that aspect very convenient. Im not so taken with a lot of the hardware I see, and so would prefer a prussik setup because then I have it both ways. my cs38 course calls for 2 strops/lanyards and since i already have a 3m, a second in 5m is going to be the versatile choice?? hence this topic. I think what i'll do, is a length of static rope, a prusik and my pulley, two biners, a double fishermans and a fig8. should serve me suitably well? When im experienced enough with this basic setup and it's paying its way I shall look at getting the setup perfectly tailored to my climbing style. As yet, style is something my climbing lacks
  25. Marc, that looks outstanding, and very well thought out especially with the second prusik for cinching stems. I like that idea. also liking the bag idea for the slack. Ive been trying to get into the habit of daisy chaining up as much of the slack as i deem not needed on my grillon and it keeps it fairly neat, but with a 5m I can see the benefit of the bag. whether or not yours is a VT, would you say that a VT and pulley is more foolproof for a beginner on a lanyard than it is on a climbing line? or what knot would you suggest? Im assuming with a VT or similar it is advisable to use a symetrical biner? Bill, I cant speak for anyone else, but personally since im not yet running a chainsaw (working towards CS38) a steelcore doesnt justify the expense yet. thanks one and all for your help so far Jim
