  1. Pallet wood tends to be full of knots. Ask my finger which got sliced by an axe whilst chopping pallets as the axe bounced of several knots.
  2. There are some on ebay at present they look good as I have one on a 350 that has suffered the same problem. If you get one remember it is everything apart and everything back together again
  3. You can by the whole saw for less than you can an engine. Seriously though the likes of Ryobi, Spear and Jackson etc are generally throw away they aren't really designed to be repaired
  4. Think it is a great idea specially looking at the quality of your work.
  5. Cut and split and it drys quicker. I've never understood leaving it in the round for 2 years when I can get the same result in 3-6 months by splitting and stacking/vented bags
  6. Birch of any description are what have colonized most of the coal tips around Wigan
  7. That was actually going to be my suggestion provided there was no render or obvious wires around. Also that it isn't going into the fascia boards. You can peel it off in one on the back of the truck and to a green waste site. Other wise do as has been said take it off bit by bit with a scraper and a hand saw. I've done the second option a couple of times now.
  8. Interestingly RobArb I'd replied to the thread on there as its in my area and I'd took down a dead cedar and a couple of conifers across the way from it. This particular tree had shed multiple branches over the past few years and with its position the council weren't keen to leave it any longer. The final branch that was shed was 10 to 12inches in diameter which would have been enough to cause serious damage to anyone walking underneath at the time. With high profile cases such as the one for the National trust safety becomes the biggest overriding factor. The Tree is opposite a school set back from the main road into Wigan on a bit of common land where people frequent in particular children. The tree was a fine example but had reached a point where other than fencing off round the tree, which as we know people don't pay attention to fences, the only other options are to heavily reduce, pollard or fell. With it being in a conservation area the council isn't fussed on heavy reductions or pollards so became fell and replant if I recall correcttly they have replanted with oak .
  9. Picture of rot at about 2 feet What was left of stump
  10. Found this from November last year. Was called out to see this Hybrid Pop and needless to say wasn't overly impressed with the condition of the thing. The whole trunk was moving and you could clearly see the base of the trunk moving in relation to the ground. Came back the next day half expecting it to have felled itself. The only saving grace was the wind direction that night was against the side of the tree where it was still attached to the root plate. Went up on ladders which were moving up and down the trunk and basically felled out as much as I could from within the main branch unions. Felling cut was pulled over with a rope and the van. Had to fell at about 4 feet in height to find solid wood.
  11. Did this job yesterday evening. A Branch Failure on a Mature Silver Birch. No outward or inward signs of any disease. Failure most likely due to sail effect during high winds of last week. Tree has had one previous branch failure over 15 years ago otherwise not touched other than a dead wood and very minimal thin by me in Feb. Branch was approx 8inch diameter and was the main leader to the fore of the tree as in the picture. Pre Post
  12. Got asked to have a look at an Ash which has had a large limb failure and now the local residents are worried about it incase it drops another. The limb in question was hollow with signs of white rot but with a rather large bracket fungi which I think may be Polyporus squamosus (Dryads saddle) but would like to know for when I talk to the tree officer. My other question is for the same tree. A large limb approx 1.5ft diameter is very close to this failure with the unions all being from a common point. The limb in question has a large cavity which I can fit my arm in. This limb overhangs a small road and has significant weight on it. My thought would be to take it off for safety reasons but this is only going to accelerate the decline of the tree. I'm interested how others may approach the same situation. Sadly I have no pic of the limb though
  13. I sell a few bags to friends and friends of friends for chimneas etc. I don't really push log sales though
  14. I'm not a fan of 0800 numbers to be honest. Many of the less scrupulous tree firms and the like round me have 0800 numbers. This is so they don't have to have any home contact number either because they travel a lot or don't wish you to know where they live. I'm not saying everyone is like this who has 0800 numbers. I could see the appeal but not for me.
  15. Taking down two oaks next week in Sale Manchester and could do with getting shot of the timber. At a guess there will be about 3 tonnes in total maybe more. It will be cut into manageable pieces. Will be available from Wednesday. Free if you can take it away. PM me if interested
  16. We're taking down a large oak in M33 next week and will be needing somewhere local-ish to tip chip and logs. I reckon there may be upto 3 tipper loads of chip in total. Logs wise 2-3 tonnes in total maybe a bit more. Any help would be great. Steve
  17. If it is council owned the trees are seen as an asset to the council so permission will have to be granted from said council.
  18. last summer did 20 60 footers only 10-12 inch diameter and charged best part of 1k. The volume that came off created enough chip to fill a 10tonne grain trailer. For the job you have I would be putting somewhere 1.5k to 2k. Plan the job properly and efficiently and the job will be a doddle. Getting the trees over is easy getting rid of the things is after is another kettle of fish if you don't plan it right.
  19. Tom is a good lad and will work hard for you. Done a fair bit with me and can recommend him.
  20. He works all over the country and is currently doing work in the Midlands.
  21. I haven't bothered this year. They told me my advert last year was a waste of money down the phone and I needed to spend more money for a better advert. If my advert was a waste of money why did they sell it me in the first place and say it would be amazing.
  22. After someone to work on the ground Tuesday in Ormskirk. Dragging Brash, feeding chipper etc. PM me for details or phone (not tonight) 07970 521692.

    Ldv

I've the 75PS LDV now that is underpowered but does a job. Struggles on steep hills if "fully" loaded with a 750kg chipper but with a normal full load and chipper does fine. With the 75 add a intercooler and you will get closer to 90bhp then get it chipped and it will be higher again.
  24. Stone circle was put there when they redeveloped the quarry which was convieniently landfilled then landscaped. Incidently you can't actually get to the stone circle without climbing over the fence.
  25. As above. Groundy wanted Monday, Thursday and Friday this week around Wigan. Phone or PM for more details. Steve Tel 07970 521692
