  1. As you've a towing licence then it may be worth considering something bigger in the 5k bracket. The lighter machines have an artificially high price as they can be towed by all and sundry.
  2. It burns I've done it. You have to turn your damper down mind
  3. Am taking a large horse chestnut down in Woolton Liverpool week starting 23rd July. Ideally I'm after someone to take all the log from the site and wondered if anyone was interested in taking the log. If not does anyone know of a tip site nearby that won't charge for the pleasure. At a rough guess the tree looks to have 6 tonnes of timber in it.
  4. I'd recommend Bill any day of the week.
  5. As it turns out the tree in question is tpo'd as the extra 6 foot of garden falls into the tpo. Strangely the client went all quiet and then very flustered despite being told its easy for us to apply on her behalf
  6. contacting the council is a job for Monday morning. I've already contacted them regarding the TPO situation. The woodland is TPO'd the garden isn't. Where the problem lies is in what is the boundary of the garden.
  7. 3 responses along the lines of what I was already thinking is good. Going to be an interesting conversation with the client me thinks. I only looked at the planning maps as my gut feeling wasn't good
  8. Been to look at a tree priced it and got the job but to me something doesn't quite feel right. The tree is on the edge of a woodland which is subject to a woodland TPO. The tree is supposedly in the clients garden but the fence is on the wrong side of the tree. The clients claim to own another 6 foot of garden beyond there fence. There are no trees in the garden that have TPO's on. The problem is I have looked at planning maps which appear to show that the outline of there property doesn't include the extra land they claim which to me would suggest the tree they want felling is within the woodland. What would you do?
  9. The reality is crown lifting of secondary branches could be seen as safety and clearance works. In my opinion beech won't tolerate a severe bashing but will take lifting and thinning well and also sensitive reductions.
  10. Try Bill He is a quality climber and recommend him highly. He is near Huyton 07758 030141
  11. Are you not meant to use a 3 way type device on your climbing system. Ok your lanyard is a supplementary positioning aid but I'd not fancy the risk of a 2 way version.
  12. I use one on my lanyard and I think they are good. Soon get used to the action of it.
  13. If you really believe it needs to come down as it is dangerous and the application is turned down by means of a TPO apply to take it down through the TPO route. If this is then turned down then look at the planning appeals route. If needs be do a hazard id sheet/survey to send in with the application. Even do an inspection climb and take photos. WE took down a lime recently which had previously been refused by the secretary of state as the reasons given for felling weren't justified. We did an arial inspection took photos and put in an application. Its time that could be spent elsewhere but in the end we got permission as our justification was valid. We have recently done the same in another area. Large chestnut which had shed limbs council said no to previous applications. Climbed it and we found major structural issues related to bacterial canker this tree is now chipped and logged. Even in conservation areas spending that bit of extra time on a notification is worthwhile
  14. There is an open office version go to OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite open office stuff is generally pretty good and free
  15. Been climbing for someone today who had one of those saws. I tried it for one cut. I was vibrating that much I gave it him back and got my 064 out the truck. At least I know I can use that for at least 20mins before I start to vibrate.
  16. next time make sure you have an exact spec of what is being done written down and that the housing association have a copy so when they come along and complain say it was done to spec and they can pay for the extra work.
  17. helicoil
  18. Went to job this morning. Gate was locked the person who rents the house wasn't in so couldn't get in. It started raining so went home then priced up a couple of jobs.
  19. There should be a little plastic plug in the hole. I had one that was doing exactly the same as yours. Plug the hole but not too deeply. If you plug too deep you block the oil outlet hole. Its a stupid design if you ask me.
  20. I climb on one having lost a harness I was desperate for a new one and was all I could afford. I love the thing myself and find it very comfortable. Then again I only have a 29" waist so that could be part of it.
  21. The previous fibreglass models were very good. These not so good.
  22. True about the days at present if just starting out but you can get to that stage that or I'm a busy fool
  23. When you go into business remember you will work a lot more hours than you ever planned for. 5 days a week cutting leaving at 8 back at 5 then out pricing which takes time then the paperwork and all the stress involved its no easy ride. There are many weeks when I could be doing 50+ hours if I wasn't careful. Also remember when going into business and you price a job don't just see a wage as there are a ridiculous amount of expenses. On the chippings front make a few contacts with farmers and the like. Don't afraid to be cheeky by knocking on a farm door. The worse they can do is say no or shoot you.
  24. I did one year and realised after only getting one job off it, it really wasn't worth it.
