  1. Don't all rush at once am after a climber to help with a manky conifer hedge reduction near wigan long as you are quick and can get a straight edge I'll be happy. Pm please
  2. Must be able to meet in orrell at 8am Friday. Jobs involve dragging brash and a bit of shedding. If you have own transport is better unless you fancy squeezing in the middle of land rover. Pm or phone 07970531692 tommorow not tonight as I am off to bed.
  3. Plenty walking. Plenty of national trust if like that sort of thing like me. Wenlock edge is good. If you like industrial heritage then iron bridge and the museams associated with it. We spent a week in shropshire and barely scratched the surface.
  4. As someone who purchased his first harness and rope off ebay used and unseen I don't see what the problem is. Does it make me a charlatan. At the time I couldn't afford brand new but now am a qualified (if there is such a thing) and insured company who is an approved contractor at two local authorities. Incidently if us "Brits" had more of a work ethic maybe we could compare to the "immigrants" that take our jobs. Perhaps us Brits should take some lessons in how to work hard. I don't worry about losing work to people who undercut me as I know I have sufficient work
  5. 25mpg out of 200tdi tipper. That's loaded and towing. I'm not too light with my foot either
  6. I'd go Portuguese laurel. Biggest bay I.ve seen is about 40feet tall.
  7. Start taking brewers yeast capsules they don't like the taste. Also citronella oil applied to skin/clothes works well.
  8. And..... what if your service dealer is about as much use as a chocolate teapot.
  9. yeah and many professional users know what they want without stihl putting unnecessary restrictions on us
  10. Anyone from the midlands interested in looking at a large hedge trim and reduction job in Tamworth with a view to undertaking the work if the quote is successful, pm me your number and I'll get back to you
  11. its the terms they use. labour only subcontractors is the term even though not subcontractors
  12. Insurance tends to have 2 different kind of subcontractors. 1 is bona fida subcontractors. These are the jobs where you get another firm in to do the work with no supervision. They are there to make there own decisions with no guidance. Effectively it is there job although you are making money off it. These should have own PLI Labour only subcontractors are freelance arborists, groundies and laborers or anyone else who are working self emplyed under your supervision. These are not really subcontractors but employed on a casual basis. You as the contractor should have ELI and PLI which will cover incidents if any were to occur.
  13. I'd agree most definitely with thinning to reduce sail area.
  14. I'm one who thinks that tip or minimal reductions make a difference. We removed over a tonne of chippings doing a tip reduction on a large mature beech. given that codom stems are more common in beech there will seem to be a higher number of failures. I also believe that there is usually another underlying defect which contributes to failure. One of which is a severly unbalanced crown. With regards to retention with bracing i would be considering the targets to aid my decision
  15. Are there any other areas of dysfunction to be concerned about. Codominant included stems are common on Beech and I personnally don't see it as a reason to fell or brace. I would be concerned if there is a heavy lean and codominant or if the crown of the tree was poorly weighted etc. Also beech will tollerate reductions. The only trees I've really struggled to do a proper British Standard type reduction on are previously topped Sycamores. Pete the council are responsible but work on a reactive rather than proactive approach. Some of the trees on the estate are marked for felling but if you go away from the path some of the trees are truely shocking
  16. Look at the pictures for cedar clear up in general chat and you will most certainly find it is a cedar. No need to contact kew
  17. Bank with Santander. When i signed up it was free for life other than charges over certain limits. I went for a business account so there would be no arguments with the wife with regards to what money i make or spend in relation to the business
  18. Ours has been on since 6. Heating just going off as I've not put anymore on fire as sat in shorts now
  19. Working in Walkden on Thursday and Friday this week looking for a tip site close by for chip probably 2-3 loads of lime chip. Also will have 3 tonnes or so of lime and a little bit of Hawthorn which if anyone would like to collect from site they are more than welcome to it. PM me if interested.
  20. Its also about knowing your local market and what other local suppliers do. The biggest domestic supplier claims their wood is seasoned it sits and hisses. I believe in selling quality mixed loads for me its how well seasoned it is. Also I'd struggle for space to divide loads into hard and soft.
  21. Thats not a bad idea if you aren't fussed on some of the "lesser woods".
  22. If you are buying in at different rates I would still charge the same myself I run a business not a charity. It helps that I sell mixed loads as you don't need to specify what the wood is. Its a mix. If you sell purely hardwoods then say it is mixed hardwood you aren't telling any lies. Your profit margin maybe higher purely due to the decrease in the raw material cost but your labour and fuel etc are going to be the same.
  23. I sell all woods mixed so you get a mix of goat willow, pop, ash, oak, conifer all in one go. The average customer is not that well discerning usually. I am clear that it is a mixed load of hard and softwood. I've had no complaints that would be because its dry and it burns well. We've had it drilled into us by poems and myth and stove manufacturers that some woods are useless. They all burn when dry. And for that I am going warming the water up with some manky old but very dry pop.
  24. No until people realise you should charge the same for any wood the better. It takes the same amount of time and effort to split it and store it and deliver it.
  25. I post some pics up not got the right computer with me and away at a funeral. The joys of family life.
