    Agreed, just curious why gdh did. We have all the handling gear for rings, just need to increase processing speed. It seems a question of taking whatever roundwood that is on offer this year due to the shortage in the South. Anyone know of any processor hardwood in Devon or Cornwall?

    Yes with a pto pump on the 35x output shaft and pump stub shaft runs pto to processor. Do you think producing billets then crosscutting again is more efficient than just ringing up oversize then splitting?

    Do you not think is most efficient to run the T 480 at the same time as the splitter to maximise on fuel usage? The 35 should do that with a pto pump splitter operation.

    By selective thinning it was in the context of 'whole tree thinning' - apologies perhaps I should have made that clear.

    Change the oil in the Diff ! Everyone forgets this. The 4 UJ's can be measured and replaced with pattern parts.

    Thanks. It takes 1 hour / m3 at present to split oversize hard, so you see the need for change. Processor Tractor only has flow rate of about 20l / min. 4 way splitters never work successfully with oversize rings > 12" which of course all ours are - being Processor oversize. No issues with high flow rate through small rams - apart from cooling due to increased friction. Larger pipework, larger spool valve, larger reservoir, oil cooler addresses any cooling issues. Treequip is the man for this but he doesn't seem to be about today.

    Planting under closed canopy - of course forget it. Selective thinning if done correctly serves to allow significantly more light into the Woodland. It's been done many times before, with additional planting on the fringes with great success.

    We need another splitter for all the oversize timber that won't go through the processor - 95% 10" rings. It can be PTO or standalone etc. Auto-return. 8 tonne ram is enough as most is oversize roundwood - no serious knots etc. Lots of quality machines on the market of course, but most are way too slow. Any suggestions welcome - ideally needs to be below 4 seconds cycle time on 10" rings. No ruling out fitting a hi-spec PTO pump, which could give a higher flow rate than most tractors.

    Sound advice from the TO. Selectively thin, removing poor trees ( form, defects etc) Under-plant with semi shade tolerant species such as Hazel, Hawthorn, Spindle to improve bio-diversity, suitably guarded / weed control. Re-visit selectively thinning the Sycamores in a few years.

    Sent our 12 year old 346xp to SPUD 2 years ago for an overhaul and port. New Meteor barrel and Husky piston & rings. It is now arguably the best saw we will EVER....... own.

    Have you any decent processor Hardwood coming out anywhere in Devon soon with access for 8 wheeler and drag?

    Are you not considering setting up a mill down in Devon - or are you fed up with 'run of the mill' work ?

    That's it, we all do far to much driving as it is! If we were all thinking of diversifying into full on milling then well worth it. I think we will invest in a lo pro panther mill, which at £495 will add value to a lot of timber that would otherwise sadly get ringed up.

    I would jump at the chance of sharing with Big J, as that sort of experience is invaluable - probably end up splitting later and both having a machine each. Big question - is there really a profitable market in Devon for small scale sawn timber?

    Is there any chip spec. timber? If so is the access good for 8 wheeler and drag? When will you have timber roadside? Thanks

    Sweet Chestnut will last longer than either of us will live! Second best would be Oak then Larch in 3rd place. I have had the old Tanalised Douglas and some barely made 15 years depending on density of the stakes.

    It not hard importing from the States - easiest way is arrange for someone you know who travels to and fro to bring the item over. Have it delivered direct to their address over there. I have done this previously successfully. FedEx and tax makes forwarding into the UK expensive.

    You may be aware that trees have 'shade leaves' and these are far more susceptible to sun scorch than other foliage. Also the normally shaded bark will be adversely affected if this summer prevails. Sound advice from the TO - leave it until end September. ?

    A £5 increase seems to have little effect on customer orders - if you were to hold off on price rises then increase by 10 or £15 I think you would take a hit. Maybe new customers tend to look for the lower price suppliers, but if you are supplying a higher quality product then people seem to be prepared to pay a little more especially if they are an existing customer who knows your product.

    I think what people are tending to do is not heating the whole house with their oil fired heating system, especially in the less severe cold weather. They are just using the woodburner and that does give them a saving.

    That's sound advise. I talked to one of your staff in the week and he said much the same. I like the idea of the lo pro bar and chain and its lo cost also! I'll be ordering when I see some time coming available.

    All the largest national harvesting companies still seem to have a backlog of orders they were unable to fill when the months of wet weather were with us. They were unable to extract the timber from sites or get lorries in to load out.

    Due to the dramatic rise in the cost of fuel is anyone else planning to raise their Firewood prices this Autumn? An increase in overheads can be absorbed - but there's a limit ! In addition heating oil has shot up in price as well as electricity and many customers say they are mainly relying on just their woodburner for heating
