  1. That is what has caused UK timber prices to rise for Firewood retailers and other Timber products - it was bound to happen - it will soon be survival of the fittest.
  2. Yes, that is generally the case as you say - depressing.
  3. No problem No level 4 training was 100% FANTASTIC !!! As was level 5 - even better, Great people and great tutors !
  4. Just saying it as it is, many will agree other may not. Try collecting data for 690 trees in the rain on a development site and then processing the data gathered. Boring.
  5. Prepare to be bored - it's not ever fun like Tree Surgery can be
  6. Saw the video a while back, Yes you made up a nice wrapper like the Posch there. You can use an electric motor or hydraulic motor if you dont have a rotator. Net wrap would be good for Beau - he may have overlooked the idea.
  7. We have tried similar in the past - no concrete floor, leaving any logs where you drive was a disaster. Logs seem to have this habit of scuffing along the ground, digging in etc. all which makes them dirty. Why not investigate locally who the potato growers are and get some poorer lo cost boxes off them to store the dry wood in. So are you fitting a rotator to the new G machine ? Even a used one of these is not lo-cost. RT Forklift, rotator, Ibc's and potato boxes is all you need. I'm being generous with my insight as you supply one of my sisters with decent Firewood in Tavi !
  8. Steep is an understatement! Very few of your setups around this region, mainly small Valtras to skid run by one man band cutters - some are very good at what they do.
  9. Gehl pivot steer - does look the business !
  10. Sounds a good plan apart from the fact that mould does not look good on quality firewood. What's wrong with using loader on the tractor? Maybe tied up all the time with your processing, moving roundwood from roadside etc.
  11. Nice feedback and pleased you sell Kindling and don't give it away ! I'll pm you at some stage in the year.
  12. I've never ever been asked for these - do they sell well? How do you encourage people to buy them? I like the idea of offering other home grown UK products.
  13. I don't need to tell you what species will go mouldy 1st - but yes, they will go mouldy. We have been through all you suggest in the early days. They dry very slowly also and you are back to manhandling and the days of endless toil that never ends. You have to think containers, containers, containers - potato boxes if nothing else. NO MANHANDLING !
  14. Have you thought about the Tajfun 480 like gdh given the variability of loads delivered these days - you probably have, but like me I don't think you could face having, bar, chain, sprocket, oil etc, and everything associated. We have to deal with small diameters on a daily basis, which as you know kills output, which is why the 375 Turbo will be the choice. Faster cycle time is everything on the small stuff.
  15. It's down to the timber Ash - usually not great. 8 hour working time - did 18 today 10" 2 people - but the 2nd person had spare time to do odd jobs while other processing the small 3" - 6" sizes.
  16. No Ash has a Posch 350 - max 8 way splitter - don't know how he does average 25m3 in a day even with 2 people. We would be pushed to achieve that with the 360 which is a faster machine given the timber available in these parts. The timber up the line is nothing like that available in the SW - much of it is as straight as Softwood Bar ! The quality is now deteriorating as more upgrade to processors and regional Hardwood supplies are dwindling.
  17. This post demonstrates how variable Output can be. With a Posch 360 and auto log deck it can vary from 2m3 / hr with hardwood beansticks which turn us on loads from time to time 3" -4" to 3m/hr with beansticks to bendy 7". Move up to 8 - 12" and it can be 12m + / day. All with 1 person loading and moving crates.
  18. It's great to see innovation and enthusiasm combined - it can be a winning combination. If you can get decent processor Hardwood and softwood roadside I would love to buy from you - send up 8 wheeler and drag, BACS transfer - Perfect. Feel free to make contact as soon as you have timber harvested and heading to suitable roadside access.
  19. " It’s still more viable to buy it by the wagon load unless it’s on your own land! " THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE WISEST SENTENCE REGARDING FIREWOOD THIS YEAR
  20. Being the devils advocate here - you may just thank me one day or prove me wrong. I am sure you have done your homework, as that is an expensive piece of kit. I would have spent a lot of time on researching demand in the South West for that machine as it's a totally different playing field down this way. Steep, terrible access for lorries and I know blokes who have been in the business for years who are struggling. Limited woodlands with suitable trees, even less plantation Hardwood and few trees not like in your neck of the woods. Not sure how long it would take to fill an 8 wheeler and drag, hand felling and then extracting to roadside. Many places there is no roadside. I see endless toil for very little return - I am a 100% positive person but not in this case. Anyway, all the best if you plan to invest. Milling timber would be 100% my focus, that's where the margins are.
