  1. Not always, I have seen them just plucked off the ground and headed straight to a nearby open area of ground or fence post to be ripped apart. Don't rule out Pine Martin depending on location.
  2. A fox would have killed the lot at 1 hit at night - daytime usually just 1 or 2. Badger, Mink, Stoat, Weasel, Ferret, Peregrine, Buzzard or other Raptor depending on your national location. Invest in electric fencer as mentioned and an auto - shut sliding door for the henhouse. Good luck.
  3. How about the approach of cutting now, leave outside somewhere shaded for 2 days to dry surface, coat with couple coats EVA /PVA 24 hrs apart to allow drying between coat. Run the belt sander over the visible top surface a day or 2 before the wedding. A woodturner I know gives the many different species of timber he picks up this sealing treatment. Senth will know for sure.
  4. "Luck penny" is what the Irish call it. I had a very well educated Irishman carry out some work which came to 1.5K and he gave me a £1 back. At the time is felt like just a pleasant gesture regardless of the amount.
  5. Fair comments. We used to do the same, but then paused to do the maths and suddenly realised that over a 12 month period we were actually spending days throwing logs and as knowone loved the job we stopped. I spent the money saved on more IBC's. Everyone was happier ! What works for one doesn't always apply to another of course. The whole setup has to work like a well oiled machine, which takes a large investment in time, effort and cash. Things have definitely got harder, especially the timber price rises much of which we have had to absorb even more reason to work on your business.
  6. The demand is just not there for them to treat that as a priority. Wont the tractor hydraulics be up to running a decent splitter or possibly fit a pto pump - this topic has been covered in detail on previous threads. Or fit you own 3 phase motor, it's not rocket science as they say ?
  7. Always fill to 1m3 and never had a complaint after 1000's of m3. The shrinkage in reality is negligible. We are not keen to handle split logs once in the crates, everyone to their own of course. We used to line with mesh but the labour and materials cost made it uneconomic, so yes we do pick a few up off the ground when we change processing length that have slipped through the cage sides, but that's about the only time we lay a finger on a log now. It's getting harder all the time to run a profitable setup so efficiency is more important than ever I think. All the time I am thinking how can we become even more efficient, still have a few ideas to make loading the delivery vehicle but that will cost iro 2K so pausing on that one for now.
  8. Ah, fair enough. It looked like you did a few 100t a year. In that case the fastest is the Ryetec CV16 followed by the Kerpan. No a major issue to fit 3ph motor to run the PTO driv, a decent Ag. engineer will be capable of that.
  9. Surely you would be far better off changing to a larger capacity processor. The cost of labour to have someone stand at a splitter for days on end in no longer financially viable.
  10. Why are you filling the IBC's with about 1.3m3 of logs? Perhaps that is how you sell them - 1.3m3 for £ ???
  11. I am amazed at that - it must be regional price fluctuation as Euroforest and Tillhill etc. further South have definitely not reflected the Ash dieback in their prices.
  12. Just about to post exact same - most of it will be very processor 'unfriendly' also 95% will go to biomass and there is no way on earth prices will fall in any event.
  13. Those phantoms are quality drones and I see why you bought it. It might be a bit risky flying the drone on the shoot the way some of the guns operate - could easily get shot by mistake !
  14. I enjoyed that and the Buzzard shadows on the ground as they soared overhead. Nice for you to get away from the processor. What drone do you have as some really decent footage there? I was thinking of getting one for the shoot I am in. Years ago your dad took my brother for a look around your farm when you were running the game shoot - shame you moved away from that as the topography is amazing for showing high birds! Large investment of course and you need the co-operation of neighbouring landowners and this is not always easy to achieve.
  15. I am totally with you - in this particular case totally reasonable, so why burden you with additional paperwork that is clearly totally unnecessary following your explanation. I used to spend hours producing seriously detailed quotes, invoices, reports etc. etc. but soon realised - 'what a waste of time' . We have produced thousands of quotes and never been asked for a further breakdown for Tree Surgery business. Spec. listing what we will do for them, then just list Labour, fuel, arisings removal. The system works and I have no plans to change it. Admin is IMO a waste of human existence so why devote more of your life to it than absolutely necessary. The older I get the greater my dislike of it. There are far more interesting things to spend time doing. I expect those who have been in business for a short time may well still love the paper exercise and totally disagree.
  16. I'd pack in tree surgery right now - you can handle the work but your talents clearly lie elsewhere - For a 1st attempt that was Quality ! ?
  17. Its great to see some iconic machinery of that era restored to such a high standard - keep it up ?
  18. Is that your nicely restored baler and MF135 in the store? ( I laughed at the re-roof)
  19. Pretty much except: Collard doves off the licence. You need to apply for a specific licence where control is necessary. NO pest control within 300 metres of European Protected Sites (Special Protection Areas, Special Areas of Conservation or Ramsar sites). Following the challenge on the General Licences I think all fieldsports sportspersons need to ensure they represent the shooting community in as diplomatic way as possible. The anti shooting fraternity are not going to go away and therefore we to carry out our activities as responsibly as reasonably possible. Minimise annoying the general public by keeping as low key as possible for the greater good however annoying you may find this ! We would all do well to treat the events over the last few months as a wake up call.
  20. I've always used 1/2" x 1" wide stickers every 18" with a rough board on top well weighted. Do think 1" thick stickers would be more effective?
  21. Is it - Good processor size, so 8 - 12" ?
  22. Good processor size, so 8 - 12" ? Pretty straight - a few photos would be ideal. Thanks
  23. Just don't go down the road of using a 2K isocyanate product unless you have a full suit, air fed mask and know exactly what you are doing - literally deadly !!! Air compressor in a different location / building priority feeding your mask. Use an epoxy primer (HB Body is great - actually 2k but not an isocyanate product), followed by basecoat colour you would like, finally Upol clear laquer. Polish after a few days in warm weather. This combination will give you a lasting durable quality pro. finish and can be used on your vehicles. Can be polished up when required to a mirror finish. If you have no compressor you can get away with buying a 50 litre and a smart HVLP spraygun.
  24. Any idea what the going rate is for a certain size e.g. 10" x 500mm ?
  25. With issues like this, is it worth cleaning threads and bolt threads with suitable solvent and using loctite to assemble?
