    I have a train on tracks surplus to requirements that would be great running into say a shipping container. The train is 6 metres long and the tacks about 13 m. It will take about 6 tonnes over 6 metre train. The track is about 12" off ground level, so dead easy to load / unload with forklift. Link up with an array of my solar panels and it's almost there. How does that sound ?

    Jesus Christ, it may be basic ( I'm still smilling) but if it works and people buy the timber - what else matters !!! No point in building a shoebox, if you are going to dry timber may as well dry a lorry load, That's the drying sorted. I have about 30 240 watt I think, solar panels doing nothing, which could be put to good use. ?

    Ah thanks. I will take a raincheque on that for a minute, but interesting. All I have researched seems to talk about humidifiers, complex schedules etc. etc. Well I suppose other's now better, so why over complicate things and perhaps drying can be done effectively simply if allow addition time. ?

    As the title reads, I am looking for other peoples personal view on the most efficient, cost effective methods of moving 'Big Butts' from point of felling, to roadside then back to base camp. We have lost a lot of sweat, winching 3 tonnes butts with the Tirfor on skids like the Vikings to get roadside. Low geared Portable winch can be good. Valtra with Forest winch where access good is rarely bettered. In the past lifted onto trailers with 2 tractors and loaders, Telehandlers, Ex 360's, wheel diggers etc. crane lorries. Lots are too heavy for the equipment and that is when it all starts to cost more than the timber will ever be worth. Best option usually flat bed with monster Hiab where access allows. I am interested how others go about this?

    Thanks for the detailed reply. I that suppose Anton has been at it so long, that he has built up a massive database of customers over the decades. Not sure how he gets that mountain of varied timber species, specifications to an air dried level that satisfies the end user. Back in the day of course, air dried was it, but then houses were not clinical, sterile baked dry boxes that a lot seem to be in this age. Kiln drying to me is a black art to me. I think that unless you are prepared to shell out and buy a commercial computerised, automated drying schedule standalone drying unit, there is a huge amount that can go wrong.

    Mmm - very large barn is what we both need ! Yes short of flat storage for stacks or roundwood right by the processors, but I am working on that now the 'drought' has arrived. Yes virtually no buildings right now as I took down the collection of old corrugated structures years ago. Plan to profile sheet over some rows of IBC's for now as its super quick. As you have been at the sharp end as a furniture maker / joiner how do you like to see boards stored ? Apart from perfect level ground, stickered every 18", out of sun/wind, ends sealed 3 coats solvent based paint.

    Do you know what mills he has? As he's been milling 'forever' I expect he has the perfect setup. ?

    oooh ? - so the with the static mill can you just keep adding track sections? Not mentioned as far as I recall on their website ?

    All good advice. Maybe I should act with caution one step at a time, don't try to run before I can walk, don't know the market etc. etc. Trackmet is affordable but need the genny also and a fair effort getting it all together and time. Buy a self contained Woodlander or a Logosol petrol on trailer and test the water, Still have good re-sale value kept under cover ? Can anyone identify the mill Anton Coaker uses, posted by Woodworks earlier in this thread?

    Well I have certainly hit the jackpot with the number and quality of replies to this thread. The choice of mill is always going to be the stumbling block - so many variables as always. I am keen to be able to mill over 5.1 m which is the max for Woodmills, the Logosol may allow unlimited additional sections but have not researched yet. No 3 phase electric, however as we know generators are not that expensive. I think single with a digital wouldn't cope. Yes the Trackmet, serious value for money and a large step up from Woodlands or Logosol. Studied one in action at the APF and was impressed. Fair enough, not a Mebor but a hell of a mill. Which Trackmet did you have in mind given that you had the 1st? Your idea about field shelter / stable that's creative thinking, I get that ! I am liking the prospects a lot. ?

    The window is called an eyebrow window, when there is a window installed. There are a couple in my area. I will take a photo when near there in the future ?

    Just running through another milling post where you were very keen on the Logosol over the Woodlands. Is there such a difference? Both can have trailer.

    Now I have used a lot of Waney Larch myself over time, totally agree. What use for Larch beams and what is a good cutting spec. if you don't mind me asking?

    Yes, got the various on bearers - waiting to bite the bullet ! Ah, is there a value in sealing log ends now if they are stood for some time, if so what is best? So many different opinions on sealing E. grain !
