  1. This may be of interest: http://www.treeworks.co.uk/downloads/publications/TOWARDS_REASONABLE_TREE_RISK_DECISION_MAKING_NF_060907.pdf
  2. Just been to look round a wood with a number of dead/dying mature trees. The site is used by the public dog walking etc.. If the trees were to fail they might hit the footpath but the risk is very low as occupancy is going to be very limited. I'm going to advise making monaliths out of them to further reduce the risk but without doing QTRA is there another way or demonstrating sufficient "duty of care." Am I right in giving them a low priority..? they've had other tree surgeons round who seem to want to remove any risk and are recommending felling anything that looks dodgy even if there's no target, one wouldn't even leave logs on site.. If they were in a garden or road I'd be saying it was urgent works but in a wood I feel that the chance of hitting a target is minimal so the works can wait.
  3. I know we all cut domestic hedges all year round, but farmers are not allowed to cut during: "The bird breeding season, 1 March to 31 July, should always be avoided: nearly every hedgerow in the country will have birds breeding in it during this time. Some birds continue breeding into August. All wild birds, their young, their eggs and active nests are protected under law. It is an offence to damage a nest intentionally while it is in use or being built – hedge cutting is highly likely to damage nests or cause them to be deserted." We've a developer who has a bout 500m of hawthorn/elder hedge that he wants us to cut, it's too big to flail so we'd be doing it with chainsaws and hedgetrimmers, we're booked up till the start of the nesting season, can we do it? or are we to late?
  4. PM me your email and I can help with BS 4043
  5. We had hig horse chestnut that split out leaving half a tree, the insurance company told the client that they were only willing to pay to clear up the bit on the deck.. I worded the quote and invoice, clear up and make safe so the insurance would pay for the whole job. I didn't mention that making safe meant felling the rest of the tree. I don't think this was dishonest...
  6. Anyone interested with a good few crane jobs under their belts - If your any good I see know reason why it shouldn't be done and dusted in a day. It's a big horse chestnut, been reduced and braced and got bleeding cancker. Over targets obviously. I am tempted to do it myself but as the only cane job I've ever worked on was about ten years ago and I only stopped by for 5 mins, think it prudent to get someone who's done it before.. 2nd of March (if I can get the crane, timber wagon, and BT sorted!) Decent rates of pay and all the saws under 3 months old (except the 84) PM or email me.
  7. We got a call from the police last night that they'd found 3 of our MS200's and the 660! Apparently the guy is being charged for receiving. Well pleased.. We might have a works outing to the court when he get's sentanced. He'll probably get off with bugger all, but we'll get to see the toe rag! Make sure you mark your kit as the police said that if you can't prove it's yours the crook often gets to keep it. I've scribed everything multiple times now on all our kit. Will the insurance company keep the saws now or what? The other saws may be headed to cambridge?
  8. Trees don't heal.. They compartmentalise.. Otherwise I'd agree.
  9. What about reliable and cheap to run/repair...?
  10. I recently purchased an 084 and it is a monster and great for logging up big stuff. I've never "needed" bigger than a 36 inch bar but it does make life easier. If I was going to have one or the other it would be the 660. If it's a every day saw with a 25 inch bar I'm happy with the 441. Having both is great as two guys can make a big stem small quick, useful when you have too carry it out of a back garden As to hauling the 84 up a tree, it isn't something I'd want to do often.
  11. It's interesting what you say about the weights, I never bothered working it out when we did our transits but guessed you wouldn't save much with ali over ply. Our original transit has the same ply back on we put on as a temporary measure when we stared up 4 years ago. Its been resprayed and had a big plastic/ali sign which covers much of the ply, it looks great. It only cost a couple of hundred quid to make and we could do it ourselves so didn't lose any time with the truck out of action. What ever you do is going to mean you can't carry more than a barrow full of chip on a 3.5 tonner any way.
  12. I think the two stage felling has been shown to be a waste of time.
  13. Sorry - they are planning to make the Tech Cert which is already a level 3 into a level 4!
  14. They are apparently planning on increasing the Tech Cert to a level 3 qualification, if that makes any difference..
  15. Timberwolf will give help over the phone, they've talked me through stuff before.
  16. I'm not sure I'd want to take this on especially as a first report..... Lots of variables and it could end all up in court with a proffesional witness ripping your report, and you to peices.. It could all end up as a lot of bother for a £100.
  17. The guy we've been using for grinding has decided to retire, he's trying to sell us his stump grinder its a big vermeer self propelled jobbie. He only wants £500 for it (+ ? for the trailer), do you think it's worth a go? We don't do many stumps, but I guess we don't sell the service as we don't make much out of it.... How many tree firms find it a proffitable side to the business, or is it just another peice of kit to go wrong? We could store it in our new alarmed, monitored, fortified container... Which does look a bit odd at the mo empty but for a load chainsaws chained up in the middle.
  18. I keep messing up and underpricing surveys and am shocked at what some consultants charge. At least £100, but if it only takes 5 mins and the tree is knackered you can knock some off the price to do the works. You've got to pay for that insurance.. You've contracted other guys so you know what they charge, charge the similar. It does depend on the job and if there is possibly work to be had.
  19. Make sure you charge enough... Reports often take longer than you think.
  20. I must be doing something wrong or right, I've got to pay 5 grand....
  21. Elvaston castle is nice, just round the corner from me.. Not much of a castle mind. Also wouldn't be too sure about long term job prospects as the council want to sell it for a golf course.
  22. Do you mean the red horse chestnuts..? Aesculus x carnea
  23. They've some nice Indian Horse Chestnuts Aesculus indic at Kew. There were loads of big dark black conkers when I was last there. I reckon there harder then the A. hippocastanum ones. http://www.kew.org/plants/trees/indianchestnut.html As I understand, Pseudomonas syringae pv aesculi is now thought to be the cause of bleeding canker killing Europeaen A. hippocastanum. As this is thought to have originated or is found in the native leaves ofA. indic, they should be resistant.
  24. I still rate the helmet but the peltor ears do let it down, the screws keep coming loose and my ears don't stay up!
  25. Your also going to need a groundie with ariel rescue and kit to rescue you...
